Toxic's Ultramarines

I've been threatening to do this for a few weeks now, so it's time I put my money where my mouth is and get started.

First up, a disclaimer. I'd love to be able to say I'll update this frequently, but honestly regularly is the best I can aim for. I've recently started a degree, which I'm doing alongside working. Add on fitting in time for friends, family and my GF and my painting time isn't what it used to be. Worse still, I'm terrible for staying on target with one project. I'll be in the mood to paint Ultramarines one week, get part way through a squad then switch to my Tau or Tyranids. So while I do modelling frequently (a couple of times a week minimum), it's not always Ultramarine stuff. It may be Tau, Tyranids, Guard or even Warmachine or Flames of War. For obvious reasons, only a small percentage of what I do will be featured in this topic.

That said, I want to commit to getting some progress with my Ultramarines. Given the recent increase in Ultramarine hobby related stuff on this board I've been feeling inspired (thanks Prot and Ishagu smile.png), so what better time to take advantage of that inspiration? In all likelihood I'll probably only be completing one thing a month, say a character or a Combat Squad or maybe a vehicle. But if I can keep to that kind of schedule I'm hoping that regular (if not frequent) completions will keep me motivated.

I have quite a few models painted, though all from different squads and companies. None of them are finished, but some are close. I don't really want to post pictures of models until I'm happy with them, but that would mean no pictures in the starting post of a painting log (unacceptable!) so I'll just start off with the model closest to completion. I'll add more as I come to work on them. Maybe updating with WIP shots will also help keep me on track.

Here's the first one, Sergeant of 3rd Companies 1st Squad, who will be modelled as a breacher squad (3rd Company is traditionally the Company that takes on siege duties) . Very close to being finished, just needs oils and pigments to finish the weathering and tie him into my gaming boards and the rest of my army. Looking back, I think I might have gone overboard with the chips on his armour, but at least it's fitting for a breacher squad. I'll stick with heavy chipping for the rest of his squad, but calm down a bit with it for the rest of the army.

Would you mind sharing your recipe for painting blue armour? It looks gorgeous.

Also, glad to see you're posting stuff here thumbsup.gif

I've been dreading this question, because I keep changing my blue recipe so I'm not 100% sure which version this was :p. The concept and technique haven't changed though - mid-tone basecoat with two layers of shading (both thinned, but not quite a wash), with the first shade being shadow and the second being the really deep shadow. Then two layers of highlight, first one a blend, second one an edge highlight (although I keep that to areas where the light will catch, I don't like edge highlighting as a way of distinguishing detail i.e. 'Eavy Metal style). Finally 5+ layers of glaze to smooth it out a bit.

I think this one was during my partial Citadel Colour phase, so it would have been:

Basecoat; Citadel Macragge Blue.

First Shade; P3 Exile Blue.

Second Shade; P3 Exile Blue + P3 Thamar Black.

First Highlight; Citadel Macragge Blue + Citadel Calgar Blue.

Second Highlight; Citadel Calgar Blue.

Glaze; Citadel Guilliman Blue

If it was the older version it would be the same, without the glaze, with the Basecoat replaced with Citadel Ultramarines Blue (hard plastic hexagonal pot) + Exile Blue, the first highlight replaced with Ultramarines Blue and the final highlight replaced with Ultramarines Blue + P3 Frostbite.

My new version (which I'm going to be testing out in this thread) changes to entirely Citadel, just for ease of mixing/thinning and replaces Exile Blue with Cantor Blue and Thamar Black with Abaddon Black. Exile Blue and Kantor Blue are very close, so it shouldn't make a massive difference.

I hope that's of some help. I wish I could be more precise, but it's a while since I painted this guy and I'm terrible at writing down recipes.

Looks great so far - I think to remember you already posted that guy in another thread - can't wait to see more ^,^

Indeed I did. Good memory Atia. Embarrassingly I've done nothing on him since then.

Very nice. I like the red contrast.... I hope you end up updating the thread. msn-wink.gif

Cheers dude. I do intend to, hopefully I can deliver on that intent :).

Hoping to get pics up tonight of a new Ultra I'm working on. I'm trying out a new technique (from the Painting Buddha video that Kurgan linked in News & Rumours), so it's slow going, but I'll have enough done today to show something later.

That guy is really nice!

You can almost see him battling it out in numerous campaigns.

Great job! smile.png

Have to paint mine.

Yeh, he's a gorgeous model. You should get yours painted and get some pics up smile.png. I'm having to battle a little voice in my head telling me to pick up more of him, one to do as a 30k Word Bearer and the other as something more obscure, either a Mortifactor, Son of Orar or Novamarine.

Ahh, I saw your work on a google image search. It's what inspired me to pick this model up and convert him for use as a Shield Eternal chapter master :-)

That's really high praise. I'm not sure what to say to that other than thanks and I'm glad you were inspired smile.png.

Got some work done on another Sergeant today. As usual with my WIP pics I haven't set up proper lights so they're not very good quality.

The blue looks a bit dark, but I think that's because it's only partially done. The left arm and backpack are still just base coated. I'm also unsure about the highlight position on the left leg. I was going for a bit of a reflective sheen, but I'm not sure I like it. I'll keep it until the rest of the model is shaded and highlighted, then decide if I want to re-do that area or not.

Totally missed this post! Sorry, I'm late to the party but he looks great. As time goes by my Ultramarines have started that dark and now I shade them up to a pretty long got blue in places I love it but a lot of stuff works for Ultramarines. I love jink space wolves are similar in that regard. Great start so far !

Thanks for the explanation on how you paint your blue! It's more than enough.

As for your latest model, difficult to comment much since he's at such an early stage but it's definitely a promising start and I look forward to seeing how you progress :tu:

Most of the model is done now. The backpack still needs painting and obviously he needs a base. Then a bit of weathering and battle damage and he'll be finished.

It comes from the Sanguinary Guard kit. They have forearm mounted Inferno Pistols. I had to remove the forearm from a standard bolter left arm and replace it with the Sanguinary Guard forearm. If I remember correctly, I also trimmed down the Inferno Pistol quite a bit too because it was originally too bulky for the pose.
