Ovidius' Knightly Quest, 3/7 Paint update, with pics

Recommended Posts

Hark one, hark all, to a tale chivalric and epic!

Herein, see figures heroic and richly dight--bleeding traitors with might.

Herein, read tales clever and finely wrought--if Master Ovidius be worth aught.

Incipit sanguinea de Lucretia fabula:

The coffin ship jolted to ground with a roar of retro burn, scorching the flagstones of another world ready to receive her butcher’s caress.

“This landing was rather unpleasant,” she said off-handedly to a stripling to her left.  His name may have been Thatteus.

“Yes, efendra,” the page halted, eyes locked firmly on the black sheen of her boots.

“When we are finished here and returned to orbit, order the pilot sent to my chambers.  I would have a word with him,” she said as she finished lacing the other of her gloves to the elbow and boarded the lift. The boy said nothing; her servants rarely replied.  Their compliance was expected, and more often than not she desired to hear naught but their screams.

As the lift clattered to a halt, Lady Lucrece a’Borda de Baathör wafted across Carnifex’s carapace, her black riding boots in stark contrast to the gray and red of her tincture. She flexed in her crimson jodhpurs and lowered herself into her mount’s cockpit.  In the ruddy glow of monitors and readouts, she eased into the crushed velvet of the command throne.  She casually wound the luxurious tress of her ravendark hair round her hand, revealing a port of silver and brass at the base of her skull, one of several like it along her spine.  She paused before thrusting her hips and back onto the waiting interface spikes.

The moment of MIU link drew a breath from the depths of her lungs that, had any of her grooms or pages been present, would have sounded rather like a bordello moan.

The throaty feline growl of an alpha predator tickled her hindbrain and she felt its sinuous coils brush her thighs.  Copper flavored her mouth.

Hunt.  “Soon,” she whispered.  Bleed.  “Yes,” came her rasp.

The muscles of her flesh arm twitched with sympathetic impulse as her gauntlet closed over the hilt of her blade.  She hoisted Tag der Rache from the locket, which hung it to the gantry, and flexed her mechanical fingers round its hilt.  Her muscles spasmed with MIU feedback as the weapon’s spirit howled to life.

The door of the coffin ship ground open in a swirl of ash and fetor.  The incarnadine and black blossoms of Astartes drop pods lay cratered around the Forum.  The Flesh Tearers were already rampaging.  The bladed icon on her greave sweated as if knowing.

Her spine tingled. Yes, she replied to the voice that was no voice: We drink today.

“The Butcher of Neukoln walks,” she voxed across all channels.

1/21 update:

Worked on the Reaper a bit.  Went with two different sized GS tubes for the hilt, put some studs on the hilt and made a bit of a pommel.  Maybe I'll mess with it some more when it's hardened.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%204_zpsvmk195ot.jpg

What do you think about the Carnifex skull as a trophy?  Obviously GSed to blend it, but I'm not sure if it detracts or adds to the aesthetic.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%205_zpstgrwehws.jpg

And I'm going to do studs on the left pauldron.  What do you think about the size/pattern of the mockup studs?  I was thinking about doing GS balls about 1/8" or slightly larger.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Shoulder%202_zpsh0h3gayh.jpg

Finally, I'm going to start repositioning the fingers this weekend.  My thought is to drill out the "knuckles" and replace them with plastic tubing so I can rotate the finger "joints" as necessary around the Reaper's hilt.  The knuckles are more or less 1/8", so 1/8" tube should do the trick.  Thoughts?

I will be doing smaller studs, maybe about 3/4 the size of those bluetack blobs.  I was thinking of rolling out a 1/8" tube of GS and cutting equal portions to ensure the balls are the same size.  I think I will preserve the rows of 3/2/1 because I'm worried that adding a fourth row of 4 would crowd things too much.

And I'm gonna ditch the 'Nid skull.  Doesn't look the way it did in my head and I'm not sure how to execute to the look I want.

I'm going to experiment with wings, spikes and sawblades to see if I can get anything that looks good, otherwise I'll remain bare.

@ Codyrstuart, I'm going to incorporate chain in there somewhere.  I'm thinking of doing a chain dangling from the pommel with a cluster of trophy skulls at the end.

Love the chainsword, I'm planning a symilar thing for my Lancer but a halberd version, so I'll be watching this thread.

Love the fluff as well, I like the idea of villains as heroes.

Being snowed in for two days has provided ample time to work on Carnifex between bouts of shoveling the cars out.

Done some embellishments on some armor panels, including getting the pauldron studs pretty much finished.

Leg armor:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Leg%20Armor_zpsymv9kk7e.jpg

Left pauldron studs:

Lines drawn and some pilot holes drilled, each filled with a dab of superglue.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20L%20Pauldron%201_zpse9dq1ewh.jpg

I rolled out a tube of GS about 3/32" in diameter and cut segments a bit over 1/8" long to form into consistent balls.

I flattened each ball out with the back of a shaping tool.

Then I used a plastic tube to make everything complete uniform.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20L%20Pauldron%202_zpstgthh8mx.jpg

Removed the excess GS from each stud and then re-flattened each stud before starting to give them a domed shape with a clay shaper.

Here's a pic with some shaped and some flat.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20L%20Pauldron%203_zpslffenux2.jpg

And done, save cleanup after the GS hardens:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20L%20Pauldron%204_zpsrzpxkzwf.jpg

Right pauldron is going to have something done.... :

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20R%20Pauldron%201_zpsggabkxit.jpg

Here is the base in its initial stages:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Base%201_zpsb5wmcnyl.jpg

Feet will be posed something along these lines:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Base%203_zpsdgltuyu8.jpg

Begun the leg repose.  Right leg is left untouched, but left leg will be bent at the knee and I'm going to free its hip joint from the hex that's standard so I have more flexibility.  Jeff Tibbets' awesome plog was very helpful here and I took many of his suggestions to heart.

Left leg was left in halves to facilitate cutting.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Legs%201_zpsxretvye7.jpg

I fixed a coping saw into a vice (the Craftsman work table was the only vice I had...) and made myself a little bandsaw so I could move the piece against the saw and not vice versa.  Tibbets was right, this really gives extreme control and made this actually quite easy and accurate cutting the curve.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/IMG_20160124_161113_zpsivgbvfbu.jpg

Here are the pieces cut.  I'm really pleased with how clean the cut was.  Lower joint was near perfect, but a tiny bit of overcutting on the thigh joint (seen below).

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Legs%204_zpsc9nqcjrm.jpg

Glued the halves together and stuffed the holes with excess sprue and some Testors plastic cement (I had to find a use for this tube that's been sitting around for years).

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Legs%202_zpszwoyb1pp.jpg

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Legs%203_zpsmnc8myhw.jpg

Next I filled the rest in with Procreate/Gray Stuff.  First time I've used it, so I'll see how it shapes and sands on this knee joint which is pretty much invisible.

Also worked on the toes and covered the gaps at the bottom of the feet with plasticard.

That's more or less where it stands this morning.  I hope to use this extra day off to do more work on the base and leg repose.  All weapons systems are completely magnetized and complete except for the gauntlet/Reaper.

So Knight's pretty much built save for the sword, left leg and all the hoses/pistons, which I'm leaving off for painting.

C&C welcome!

@ Col.hertford: I leveled and sanded off the two halves of the joint that I filled with gray stuff.  I'm planning on putting a GS spacer in the joint to the same width/depth as the other leg once I get the positioning worked out.  I think I'll drive a pin down through the knee to ensure it's solid then.

I cut the soft armor off the left leg so it can be positioned more or less vertically.  I made 4 rings of soft armor out of GS that I'll stack on and then drill through them so I have a place for a pin through the hip.

Got a goodly amount of work done on the base today, including where the left foot is positioned, so I can work on rebuilding the leg next.  My work on the left pauldron didn't go to plan, unfortunately, so I'm going to have to try it again or go another route.

I'm definitely not looking forward to fixing that left ankle joint.  I think I'll have to build the ball joint up with GS and then flatten it off so the foot isn't cocked at a silly angle....then I get to suffer through pistons!

Your making good progress, there's a few excellent knight builds going on at the moment. I'm stealing your ideas left, right and centre!

You should check out Maclorens thread. Hes done some excellent reposing of knight using 12mm half round dolls eyes to replace the balls in the joints. I've just ordered some to give it a go.

I like your idea for the rings on the hip. That clever, I made a bit of a mess of a couple of mine, I'll bear your solution in mind if I ever do another one!

If I were to do it again, I would use Gray Stuff instead of Green Stuff only because I would have liked to go back and sand the bevel a bit more than what I did with the clay shaper.  A bit more rigidity might be better too.

I've cleaned the rings up and mounted them to the hip.  I'll get pics up later.

Small update to show the hip rebuild:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Hip%203_zps5c3an8k9.jpg

All said and done, I think it looks pretty good with the leg attached.  Will glue later.  Leg reposition will definitely necessitate redoing the hose on that leg, since I don't think it's long enough to stretch anymore.

Did some work with the pose but I'll need to rework some GS on the base to get the footprint in the right place.

Also got a bunch of paints including some orange oils for Nornsister, the VMA Aged White and a selection of new grays for Carnifex's scheme.

Weekend update:

Leg is pinned and glued and lower body posing is more or less done (no pics of that yet).  Just need to clean up the new ankle joint and finish drilling out one more piston.  Thankfully I was able to get away with only needing to redo 3 of the 4 pistons on one foot and not all 8.

Knee pin in place:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20knee%201_zpstqnrh0ba.jpg

I was a bit overzealous (or misaligned) with my drilling out the ankle joint so I ripped one side, sadly:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Ankle%201_zpsykfhvu6s.jpg

Ankle joint fitted to the doll's eye that serves as the replacement ball joint (thanks, Macloren!).  Also shows the drilled piston cylinder:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Ankle%202_zpslv9eb82v.jpg

Pistons, one left to do:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Pistons%201_zpsvle4bdu0.jpg

Also started working on proof of concept for adjusting the fingers to grasp the Reaper's hilt.  Going to slowly drill out the knuckles and then replace them with plastic tube.  First drilling:

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f32/Oat_Action_Man/Carnifex%20Finger%201_zpsmtr5vyjl.jpg

Also finished up adorning the right pauldron.  I think it's decently blended in, but it still juts out farther than I would like.  The Scribor resin is really hard to heat form and it took a lot of work to thin it down even enough to get it to bend at all.

Wow, you really have gone all out on this. Your attention to detail on the build far exceeds my own, I just get all excited and start smashing models together! Lol.

Glad you found the doll eyes useful, im loving the hobby community on here, around the Knights. Everyone's sharing ideas an pushing each other forward.

The Carnifex walks!

Ignore the fact that it's basically held together by bluetack and I had to hold it up, but it's just proof of concept before I finish off the details and paint the subassemblies.

Yeah, that's looking great man. You've done a really nice job of the reposition, perhaps a tiny tweek more upright to give him slightly more of a balanced position. You'll be able to call that better than me though as you have the beauty in your hands.

To mirror the Col though, looking forward to some colour, you're nearly there. :-)

Edit: actually it might just be the angle of one of the pics making him look a little 'tippy'
