Spear of Achilles
Ok, this is going to be a project that looks too good to pass up...want to do a Cindered Khorne Daemonkin army that uses this look... http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qeuCAzZhNaw/VqhjyaVJb5I/AAAAAAAAB6g/pSTu6AOcHzo/s1600/Presentation_shot_Ahriman_01.jpg but I'm wondering if I should go light to dark or dark to light...(probably the former)...I'm seeing a lot of blues/greys/violets and of course umber burns to flame spectrum...nothing to show yet, as just a concept, but I'll try some test models and post on this thread. I'm thinking doing the flames in the various marine joints/eyes, etc, then filling them with liquid masking rubber and then going for the base colors...might be the best way to do 'veins' of flame.... Spear of Achilles
I have 15 Puppetswar flesh hounds and I wanted to try this idea before I tackle them in the color scheme. Each pic has info about what steps i was on. Did it work? Meh, not as well as I'd liked...the mask liquid was quite hard to control;...either I'll have to use the brush-on, or add it in very small amounts, wait for it to dry, and add more. On the parts of the model it did work best, I really like the effect...I think these flame areas will look much better with a little brush touch up, and of course everything armor wise needs to be painted. I sued a synthetic cotton swab and on the old minitaire paints, it removed the paint as well as the dried rubber mask...as for how it turned out? Nothing ventured, nothing gained.... This is the stuff i used; This stuff has a needle in the cap as well to clear the applicator needle. Comes out as fluid as milk, so even with the needle you are somewhat at the mercy of the models contours (I suppose I could be VERY careful and build on to added, dried mask for greater control...would take an age...dries fairly fast, so I'll try the slower steps and just devote a day to masking. Maybe use of the airbrush would speed up the drying time? The mask was added before i painted him in soot ...pained the various areas I though would be flame seams first then masked. (over a ghastly old light blue original paint job...yes i know shoulda stripped/primed) Back after painting over mask fluid Stripping off the mask,,,,need more though in where my yellows/oranges are going to show... Some work with a normal brush is in order (Obviously) to clean up splotchy mask patches Stripped the mask...need to find a item, maybe a clay-shaper, that will move the mask off without scratching paint This is going to take a lot of touching up (and of course none of the items he wears/uses are painted yet) Edited April 26, 2017 by Spear of Achilles Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318575-the-cindered/#findComment-4320903 Share on other sites
Spear of Achilles
Hmmm the 'Great Experiment' is pretty much over with using Masking Fluid through a needle tip. I find that it is just too uncontrollable to give fine detail results (especially on these small models). I'll save such for eye sockets and cockpit glass when airbrushing. Below are the steps I did tonight on 5 of fifteen flesh-hounds. I was very happy right up to the last step, removing the masking. Looks like it will be fine haired brushes for these burning areas from now on. It won't take much to fix them with the airbrush, so it was a worthy experiment. I've listed the steps and comments as I went through it. Yellow with patches of oranges added in horizontal bars...hopefully the yellow will appear at the top of the veins of fire/muscle edges... Spraying Ghost Tint Orange to make them pop when the masking is removed. Adding the masking...was a slow process as I had to wait for each side of the spine. Afterwards I thought I should have did the backbone spines in circles/dots, not a solid line like this Deep purple overcoat (you can see the lighter areas where the masking is on the spine.. Dark blue added in most pronounced areas... Blue-grey airbrushed on major muscles Gory red sprayed in varying thickness for a mauve blend. Better closeup...foreshadowing the mouth tints too Puppetswar is disturbing in its anatomical correctness Adding white socks (lol) to make the coming yellows/oranges brighter Medium yellow sprayed over white and gore red Orange sprayed over gore red and most of the yellow Final spray of Ghost-Tint orange. The gloss/shine will be faded with dull-coat later...this is about as good as I had the model before pulling up the masking.... Pulled up the masking...clay-shaper with pointed rubber tip did 'ok' but still not thrilled with the results....will repair later... experiment with masking: FAIL.. Brother-Chaplain Kage
Even if they didn't turn out as well as you'd hoped, you're conducting some experiments that could very well impact the work of others. :) Spear of Achilles and Honda 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318575-the-cindered/#findComment-4321858 Share on other sites

The_Chaplain
Visually, they look great. The gradient in the skin tone will really pop on the tabletop. I think you should do a conversion based off of Nagash or one of the Mortarch steeds to really showcase that "cindered" look. Agree there; things with prominent rib cages will allow that "internal fire" look to really shine. Spear of Achilles
My first attempt at lava bases. Working with these rather bland 50mm bases from Proxie Models (they were dirt cheap, if low-grade plastic), I used large-grain basing sand flock, and a ton of Elmer's Glue the night before I painted them. I waited for the first ground layer to dry before adding more sand layers. Coated everything in clear coat to seal them together, then primed them. Got home from work at 00:30 and spent an hour and a half painting them. They have a more red/orange hue than the camera will pick up under stark fluorescent light (they look lifeless yellow in some pics). I'll add cinder grey to the bigger lava chunks and a gloss coat to the yellow-orange areas before I base the dogs on them permanent. Spear of Achilles
Did some more work on my army; 2.5 hours logged tonight re-painting some bloodcrushers and a bunch of bloodletters with an airbrush I aint touched in months...they now match my fleshhounds and spawn...got a lot of work left to do on them but they are at least cohesive with the other units. Added an old Halloween plastic skull in there for tracking tithe... Draakur
Looking soooo good. No real idea why you're not getting feedback, my honest guess is there's not a lot to say other than "Awesome!" Interesting choice with the female models, my first thought was it didn't come together, but I'm starting to think otherwise now :) Spear of Achilles 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/318575-the-cindered/#findComment-4706073 Share on other sites
