The rise of Forge World Muninn

Question- I am considering getting an airbrush, as your stuff is quite heavily airbrushed what do you recommend I get?

woot.gifyes.gif I'm so proud! *sniff sniff*

Now, I'm not sure how much research you may have done on the subject, so I'm just going to do a quick write up in case anyone else is looking for info as well.

I went into airbrushing with the mindset of, 'I'm sitting down everyday and I'm essentially going to relearn how to paint' As long as you intend on using your airbrush for more than just base coats on Astartes armor, it's going to have a huge impact on the way you go about doing everything else. At the very least it will make you rethink the organization and order in which you do things. I say this to emphasize that I was all in from step 1, so I didn't skimp and get some cheapo ebay no name airbrush/compressor combo, not to say that you need to spend tons to get a good setup.

So what are we looking for in an airbrush?

1. We want a trusted brand name.

This will give us piece of mind that there are usually factory guarantees and in the long run parts will always be available for replacement/expansion. (Needles, tips, etc. etc. These things take regular ware and tare and will need replacing eventually.)

2. We want gravity feed.

With a gravity fed brush you are going to get a more consistent flow of paint from your pot through the nozzle, as it's using the natural laws of physics to let the paint flow DOWN for you, as opposed to a siphon fed brush which will use some of your precious air pressure to force the paint from the pot UP through a hose and through the nozzle, resulting in an inconsistent flow.

3. We want dual action.

Dual action brushes will give you control of the trigger to apply air pressure by pressing down, and then control the flow/amount of paint by pulling the trigger back. This will offer us more control over the air pressure and flow of paint.

4. We want something that is well engineered.

This will save us a lot of time in the long run. Some companies have overly complex mechanisms in their assemblies with will add a lot of time and hassle to the cleaning and maintenance of your brush.

So what is my set up?

Airbrush:

http://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-RK-1-Additional-Regulator/dp/B0078MEXX8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1463849700&sr=8-1&keywords=badger+krome

This brush has everything that I need. Badger is a fantastic and well trusted manufacturer. And it comes with 2 needle options, fine tip for your base coating and larger work, and ultra fine for more detailed work. Though I find myself just using the ultra fine most of the time.

If you end up absolutely falling in love with airbrushing and desire something that you can get an even more detailed fine touch with, the Badger Sotar 20/20 is your guy.

Compressor:

After you choose your airbrush, I like to stick as closely to that brand as possible to avoid having to deal with adapters and other frustrating scenarios as much as possible. So I went with:

http://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-TC909-Aspire-Compressor/dp/B008J2T034/ref=pd_sim_201_89?ie=UTF8&dpID=41-Hzgu0DNL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR151%2C160_&refRID=0M6DCAGXR411B4VHG5GN

It's tankless so it will be running more frequently, but it is relatively quiet. I live in a small apartment and I have never had anyone complain about noise. It has a built in regulator to control the air pressure generated. (we will usually be running from 5 psi for detailed work to 20 psi if you really want to blow some crap out there.) And it has a built in moisture trap, so you won't have to worry about water getting into your air line and causing spurting through your brush. It's small, it's quiet, it has all the features you need and it gets the job done.

Other essentials!

Hose: (duh)

This is useful if you eventually get another brush for more detailed work, then you swap between them more quickly and easily.

After all of that it's time to start looking into paints, but this is more of a preference thing, so you'll have to get in there and test out what you like. Personally I bought the range of Badger Minitaire paints when they released, and to tell you the truth, I do regret it a little bit. Some of the colors are a little dodgy in terms of consistency and flow. Some are really thick while others are thin and clumpy, primarily their whites.

I have heard amazing things about the Vallejo Air line so I would recommend looking in that direction. And I use Liquitex airbrush medium to thin anything that needs to be. This even works great for many of GW's paints.

I hope this helped in some way!

Look forward to more progress from me over this weekend, it's looking like I should have some free time to do some hobby!

Hey guys! Sorry for the long overdue update. The Sicarian squad has been finished for a few days, I just couldn't find time to take some decent pictures. Pretty happy with the way they turned out. Some of the osl did end up a little sloppy, but that can always be fixed later.

And as promised, the Dominus is next! So far I have most of the base colors on him and a few washes. Not really sure what color to go for on the shaft of the axe. Any ideas?

gallery_72382_11636_265124.jpg

Wow looking great! As for the shaft I used a dark browny red sort of colour and I really like the way it came out

Thanks! My fiance said almost the exact same thing for painting the axe. I'm thinking that might be the direction that I go in.

I feel good for getting a basecoat on a tank this weekend.  Then I look back @ this thread.  -_-

Amazing stuff!  Was not expecting the Dominus so soon.  The aqua/light blue really does give a totally different dynamic to the model.

Airbrushing is almost like cheating. The robes look a little flat in my opinion, I may spray in some shading and dirty it up tonight. What do you guys think?

I think models look so much better when they are muddied up but I can't seem to get the knack of it

Me too! I'm still relatively new to weathering techniques. The Knights were the first models that I attempted any extensive weathering on. As I'm learning, I find the key for me, is to stop myself from going overboard. Less is more.

Update! Magnetized weapon options aside, the Dominus is mostly finished. I might add a bit more yellow to the center of the osl to emphasize it a bit more and I feel like there needs to be something on that hat. Maybe a white cog or something? What does everyone think?

Credit where credit is due! Very well done! :A

My humble critique: Turn down the OSL on the Dominus a bit. The parts on his back look more like battery acid is corroding them and not like they are glowing. Same goes for his face. It is a homogenous mass which makes it hard to see any of the detail. I would suggest limiting the OSL to his eyes and the "eyebrows" of his mask. It shouldn't spill over to his mouth-piece. For the parts on his back I would also turn it down a bit. Maybe make another very thin layer of a darker green on his upper back where the parts are attached. That way it looks like they are radiating. Something like this: http://www.coolminiornot.com/pics/pics16/img55e0cd3e92aad.jpg   http://www.coolminiornot.com/pics/pics16/img55e0cd6f4393a.jpg

There you can see the OSL on the back parts but it doesn't clog any of the details. Same on the face and his weapons.

Heya guys! Update time! I finished up the Dominus' weapons today and did the final touches on the osl.

Thanks for the critique Mo! When I decided to start up the Admech, one of my goals with the force was to practice my osl technique. I'm still struggling with it to be honest. It's so easy to over do! Just one little twitch of the trigger finger and it's all mucked up! But in the end I think it looks much better than it did. I also gave him a fancy golden pinky!

All 6 of my Kataphron destroyers received their base colors tonight, but I forgot to snap a picture of them. I'll try to get a few pictures up while I work on them tomorrow night.

You sir are an artist.

Thanks Semper! That means a lot.

I'm going out tomorrow for my first real learning game. I've played one or twice before with my Ravenwing but I have a VERY loose grasp on the rules.

I'll be sure to snap a bunch of pictures of the forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus on the field to share. Who knows, maybe I'll come home with some new goodies. I'm really excited to see how my painting stacks up to locals!
