I dunno, Skalpynock, I always like the 'mentioned but never seen' characters.

For example: There's always at least someone in life you hear stories of, often tall tales but sometimes just the solid impression of a person, and it goes on so long that you almost never want to actually meet the person - the impression of them being so much stronger for never having met them? Even better if there's actually risk you might meet them, e.g. a friend of your friends, but somehow you never do...

Also, there's always Maris Crane.

Kind of like Sgt Bray in Gaunts Ghosts? Mentioned a lot in the first half of the series or so. His platoon even being in what was considered the top 5 of the regiment. But virtually never seen. Yet, for some reason, I really like Bray!

Laurie Goulding's Afterword of Shadows of Treachery mentions this:

as I type this, is about to hit Book 40 (I’m also editing content right up to Book 46, and beyond!)

So it seems like the next bunch are in various stages of completion already, beyond Corax and Master of Mankind.

Also this:

It was also the last time that a Horus Heresy book wasn’t planned at least eighteen months in advance, but we’ll come to that later.

The Afterword is dated with May 2016, so chances are a bunch of them are done already beyond the ones we know.

Consider, however, that four of the fifteen entries released since then have actually been collections of previously released novellas, short stories, audio dramas, and various other smaller entries. We're due at least one more anthology before we hit Book 46 - and more likely two.

Which is a problem how/why exactly? The only anthologies they could get done right now are Corax, coming next month, featuring a new novella, and Tallarn, with the Garro stories being turned into more of a novel instead.

Beyond that, there's just Meduson, Blackshield and Myriad as far as short stories to bundle go, and a couple of Novellas which are long overdue.

Not every event needs a full novel about it. A lot of times, a novella or even two or three short stories are fully sufficient to move individual pieces forward. Just look at Age of Darkness, The Primarchs or Shadows of Treachery.

There's nothing else I'm aware of myself. To my knowledge we have Corax due in October (I think I heard Leman Russ: The Great Wolf then too), and Master of Mankind in November (again, think I've heard Magnus: Master of Prospero then, but I could be imagining that). Nothing else with a set monthly date I know of.

Personally, I was a huge fan of the format until the focus for it became to ensure that every single story told was also released in an anthology. Now, it feels like just an excuse to re-package every shorty story, e-Short, and audio item along with a novella. If you didn't want to wait as much as two years to read the stories packaged, you'll essentially have to make a redundant purchase - because the last couple of anthologies have also featured short stories that were never released elsewhere or are no longer available.

To each their own, but I'm not a fan.

My biggest complaint about the last anthologies was actually that they didn't feature anything that hadn't been released before. There was nothing in Legacies of Betrayal, War Without End was 4 event/limited anthologies in one, Eye of Terra and The Silent War had a bunch of audio drama prose texts, but with very few exceptions, every story included was out as an individual ebook prior to release already. The Harrowing was a bit late, with that releasing just a few weeks ago, but that's about it.

They've even released the stuff from Eye of Terra and The Silent War as short stories before the anthologies hit this year.

Why that's precisely why I love them! And frankly, I hope they stay that way for the reasons Phoebus described, its unfair to the people who actually buy the audio-dramas, e-shorts and such to have to buy them again just so they can read a little new material. Also, I'm glad I can have everything sitting on my shelf in one format. Also, the less new material we get, the less anthologies we get, so its a win-win I'd say.

I'm mixed. Both are good, except for one thing: just release the at the same time .

Ebook, hardback, audio, script, legacy- the whole kit and kaboodle. Even the £10 floppy editions. Get it all in.

That way an anthology would be *all new*, but alongside its respective audio(s), hardback for those that want it, Legacy paperback for those keen to have them.

Sure, they might take a hit in the sales from people not buying duplicates or being funnelled to the most expensive due to artificial scarcity, but I cannot see how that hit wouldn't be offset by the renewed enthusiasm and... 'resonance' of having it all go in for a big hit.

Hell, their books don't hit the NYT bestsellers anymore. I'd be surprised if that couldn't be resurrected. Even if their performing better than previously: it can be improved!

I do love an anthology. The variety is a real attraction.

Roomsky,

I don't see how you can hope the anthologies stay the same based on the reasons I outlined. It's precisely because I already bought all this stuff individually - because I didn't want to wait 18+ months for the anthology - that it's incredibly frustrating to spend $16 for an eBook (I can only imagine the pain felt by those who collect the physical volumes) for the 1-2 stories that Black Library have ensured were either not available outside of an exclusive event or are no longer available.

It would be one thing if the wait time for an anthology was smaller. As things stand, though, we're looking at a wait that sometimes exceeds the actual story arcs associated with the material. Duplicate sales may be a reality in the science fiction marketplace, but to anyone out there from Black Library reading this, it sucks to read an Anthology titled Meduson almost two years after the release of The Seventh Serpent.

Apologies, I had forgotten new material actually was in newer stuff, like Inheritor.

What I meant to communicate is that, contrary to those hoping for completely new content in anthologies, the anthologies from here on out contain only material that was previously available in another public format format, like audio dramas or e-shorts. That way those that bought them already won't have to buy the dead-tree version, as they wouldn't hold anything new.

I guess the Legacies of Betrayal format is my ideal, unless there was something previously hard to acquire in there.

Ah, I understand now. That having been said, the wait for so many stories, and the fact that they would now be told terribly out of sequence with novels and novellas they go with, is just a drag.

For a person who let's say new to our HH love, it would be a nightmare to figure out the correct reading order for all the audios, shorts, novellas, limiteds etc. comparing to 40 main novels. The right version would be to have numerical list with all anthologies and stuff - and not only 40 novels and anthologies

According to Wayback Machine, at least since the middle of August.

I personally prefer Sviox's timeline: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293105-horus-heresy-timeline/

It may be out of date at this point, but it breaks down all the anthologies into individual stories, which I find most helpful.

Even when it was up, I would offer Black Library's reading order wasn't exactly chronologically accurate. I commend the Black Library folks for putting a recommendation up, but I think it becomes quickly obvious that you need some sort of spreadsheet graphic to properly illustrate at what point each story takes place.
