Darg's Alpha Legion hobby thread

When one of the local clubs started a Heresy slow grow campaign I decided to return to the Warhammer fold. (every time I'm out they pull me back in)

In an attempt to keep myself focused on a single project I've decided to start documenting my army.  To start with we have the first round Victory is Vengeance warband.  So here we have my HQ 150pt/Troops 200pt selection.

The beginning

I'm pretty happy with how they've turned out so far. Next I need to add another 100pts of troops, I picked up a unit of Headhunters for my birthday so a couple of those will definitely be featuring, I'll probably drop the terminator and seeker for some other options too.

Nice to see you here, looking good mate!

What list did you run for round one? I never got a chance to check it out

 I think it was:

HQ

Centurion w/ plasma pistol, power axe and AA

Assault Sarg w/ power dagger, fist and AA

Troops

2x tactical

Tac Support w/ melta

Tac Support w/ Plasma

Heavy w/ Missile

Seeker

Recon in scout armour

Termie w/ combi-bolter and power sword

2 x assault

I wouldn't say it was particularly effective but I had a lot of fun.

How're your Sons of Horus going?  Planning on running the dread again? That's an awesome model you've done there.

So far it's been pretty infantry heavy, mainly because I have three B@C boxes as the core of my army.  I haven't quite decided where I will take it yet,

I tend to buy stuff I like the look of or the fluff for and try to build around it.  I think, ideally, I want to end up with a pretty fast army with some jetbikes, some tanks and maybe a Sicaran depending on finances.  I might go the mechanised route and put my tacs in Rhinos but the idea of AL infiltrating 20 strong units of tac marines is very appealing.

Along side that I'm planning on decent sized units of recon marines and headhunters and a nice big assault marine blob, with proper mkIV jump packs instead of the mkII ones stolen from my 40k Nurgle marines that I'm using at the moment.  Oh and I'm waiting on an order from Forgeworld that includes the bits to start converting some Lernean termies.

So the second round of the ViV campaign tomorrow, with an extra 100 points to play with I've decided to go with more shooting.  I've added three headhunters, a couple of heavy bolters and three basic tac marines.  I've dropped the Seeker and Terminator I used in the first round as well.

The Headhunters are currently armed with regular bolters since I had planned to magnetise them anyway so I can switch up their combi-weapons and we are still running with the old rules until we have the new red book in hand. (mine shipped today so I should have it well before the next round)

Round 2

I'm finding the painting scheme pretty easy to do, most of the hard work is done by airbrush so it's surprisingly quick to do the armour, then it's just the detailing really.

Now I need to focus on filling out the piecemeal units I have for April when we start in on the normal force org games.

I'm also waiting on an order that includes some Volkite Chargers so I can convert up some Lernean Terminators.  I'm still not entirely settled on what I will do with the B@C termies to bling them up but I have a couple of ideas to play with.

I'm going to play with the chain iconography you see on the heresy era Alphas, I think by filing out channels then filling with greenstuff and actual chain I might get a nice relief chain effect.  I'm thinking a bit of plasticard work on a couple of bits of the armour and I'll be able to alter the appearance for the models to be obviously distinguished from regular termies.  Possibly some simple press molds of some of the hydra iconography, my greenstuff skills aren't up to the level of sculpting I would need to produce completely original details.

The hard part will be doing it without them coming out too overtly chaotic, I don't want to end up with some thing that is too covered in chains, spikes and skulls.

So I've been working on converting up some Lernean Terminators from the B@C termies.  I've got ten of the bodies done and just need to knock off five more sets of the shoulder pads plus I'm just waiting on a bunch of power axes to arrive so I can finish them off and get painting.  I'm trying to decide whether or not to magnetise the two Conversion Beamers so I can swap in Heavy Flamers or Plasma Blasters. What do people think?
