False Flags - Legio XX

Introduction

Well, what can I tell you? I'm from Austria, Vienna, 19 years old and studying Economics. I have been reading the Horus Heresy Novels published by The Black Library for longer than I can think of. Actually, I had been reading their books for years without even knowing that there was a corresponding game out there. When I got aware of the tabletop war-game of 30k & 40k, I got super pumped about playing the Horus Heresy. That was last Summer when I signed up here and tried to get in touch with the hobby. Back then starting a 30k army was hideously expensive, so I resigned temporarily. But with BaC being released there was some fresh breeze and I finally bought my first BaC Boxes last week. And some FW Models on Ebay (never going to do that againdry.png )

Goals

My goal is to build a fully playable 3000 pts army, at least. I do have a certain list in mind I will buy and paint my models after. Since an army is never finished, I will certainly add other units as well, but at first, I want to be able to play with fully painted miniatures.

Army List ( as of april 2nd 2016)

to be discussed

Why the Alpha Legion

I chose them because of their rules and variety of play styles they bring on the tabletop, one is not forced to play them one certain way but has a lot of options how to field them. Plus I like their color scheme given by Forge world. Dark blue-metallic and bronze is just awesome.

@Big Bad Squig

Thank you for the compliment. The armour looks better than I expected it to because I used brushes and no airbrush.

@Brother-Captain Arkhan

Thanks!

@fire golem

Thank you a lot. I'm so happy that the blue turned out so nicely even without an airbrush.

@RedInventor

Thanks. I like the brazen-blue scheme of Dynat's Marines a lot too.

@Olis

I will give it a try with the next legionary. This one already has his armour messed up too much! Haha

@ElectricPaladin

Oh Thanks. The MkV Marines have so much character and look so dangerous.

@topic

In the next few days I ought to have updated my initial post and give you guys some insight on the project, background, army list and the person behind the project. It's my first ever army and project log so please don't expect too much haha.

I would advise, if you do try to paint scratches on, that you might try using a needle to apply the paint. It'll be much more precise than a brush.

Interesting. But do I use the tip of the needle? I'd be afraid to scratch the paint.

Well, yeah, you use the tip. Just apply no pressure at all and keep a hand braced against something solid to help make a straight line. If you are worried about the needle scratching the paint then you could either blunt the needle or apply some 'ard coat. Or both. Just... be sensible about it. :)

Alright, sounds good. Thank you a lot for your advice! I'll try my best to present results asap.

@Pearson73

Thank you! Nice to hear, since I haven't had any experience regarding weathering until now.

Little update on my Tactical Legionaries:

I desperately need some kind of artificial light while taking pictures of the miniatures. Can anyone give me some advice on that?

Also, i guess the bronze is waaaaay too bright. I needs to be darker. I'm going to correct that once I got the appropiate paint. Plus i haven't finished the sergeant's head yet, but that's obvious I hopetongue.png

EDIT:

Updated my initital post.

I think i'd like to steal this shade of blue for my nurgle lord. Care to share the recipe?

1 - Dark silver. 2 thin layers as a basecoat

2 - Bright silver. Zenital drybrush

3 - Blue Wash. Don't leave any stains. Unthinned.

4 - Blue Wash 2nd layer. Unthinned.

5 - Blue Wash/Black Wash 50:50, thinned down, try to create some shadows.

6 - Weathering with bright silver.

If you have an airbrush, then airbrush it.

Cool, thanks. I hope i can make it work as well smile.png

Yeah if you need some further help just send me a PM. I could also take some WIP pictures for you to compare.

Very cool scheme, the worn look suits the Alphas, helps obscure their origins!

Thank you! Though I went a little over zealous with the weathering on the guy in the middle for example.

Hey Guys,

Although I didn't manage to get a lot of work done, i took some new pictures of my first tactical squad for you. 6 guys including the sergeant are finished but when experimenting with the armour color i ran into some problems. When comparing this Artwork

7ad599f66699b6fcb088fc988ea66d6a.jpg

with the color of my legionaries' armor it got me thinking that it turned out way too bright. I painted one of the legionaries darker (using purple and blue washes) and it turned out as you will see in the pictures below. But my question is, do you guys think i should paint the armor darker or should it stay the way I painted the other ones when compared to this artwork?

Looking great. I wouldn't change a thing, I think you're on a winner here.

edit: I know what it's like to feel like you've picked the 'wrong' colour scheme for your troops, and it sucks. If you're still unhappy, ust remember that the Alphas are noted as having followed several different schemes at various times (indigo/metallic blue being two of the most prominent) and that there's no reason why certain units which had seen combat more often might have much duller armour.

Plus your version just looks cooler, to be honest.
