[Homebrew] Cleutin and Moriar

Originally discussed here, I thought I'd bring it to the wider audience for help with the points cost, balance and possibly play testing. It's entirely possible I forgot to do this earlier /blush

Below is the original idea, but updated following assistance from the BA sub-forum:

Veteran Sergeant Cleutin, Guardian of the Shroud of Sanguinius

Said to have been Dante's Scout sergeant he was the oldest non-dreadnought/heretic Space Marine. His stats in Codex Angels of Death were WS 5, BS 5, STR 5, TGN 5, W 2, I 5, LD 9 to represent his experience and he cost three points less than Corbulo (his wargear, the Shroud of Sanguinius, cost 50 points!). Other than that, he was simply like a Veteran Sergeant.

The Shroud of Sanguinius did the following: It could be deactivated at the start of any BA turn. By doing so all models except Cleutin within 12" would be affected by Frenzy (+1 A, immune to Psychology).

If the rules were released today, I would have it as the following:

  • One Veteran Sergeant per army may be upgraded with the Shroud of Sanguinius for 20 points. It may be used once per game at the start of any fight sub phase and all models with Faction: Blood Angels within 6" would receive Rage and Fearless for that turn. If the model already has Rage, it gains +1 ATK for that turn.

So, more likely to be a Blood Angels relic I guess, with the attacks gained working similar to our Psychic power Unleash Rage.

Moriar the Chosen, Death Company Furioso Dreadnought

Morleo Moriar was a former Captain who was interred inside a Furioso Dreadnought. During this time, he fell to Black Rage and became a Death Company Dreadnought - in fact this was the first Death Company Dreadnought and he was around for the third and fourth edition Codices. Moriar has two (what are now called) Blood Fists (with built in Melta Gun and Heavy Flamer) and could make a Tear Attack for armour penetration (2D6 + STR) and he had an extra D6 to his attacks in assault (so D6 + base attacks + any charge bonus). He also had things which have made it through to the current DC Dreadnoughts so as what is now called "None Shall Stay My Wrath".

If the rules were released today, I would have it as the following:

Moriar the Chosen would be an upgrade for one Death Company Dreadnought per Blood Angels army for 30 points.

  • Front AV would be increased to 13 (to match the Furioso)
  • WS would be increased to 5 (to match the Furioso)
  • Attack characteristic would be D3 + 3(4) (this matches the current BA Codex)
  • Weapons would be two Blood Fists with Melta Gun, Heavy Flamer and would retain the option for having a Magna Grapple

(I would like the model to have Armourbane if both Fists are still operational to represent the old Tear Attack, but that's only because I feel dual Fists are pretty bland. To be honest, it probably would make the model overpowered).

Thoughts?

Some things I don't want to add are corrections to a Dreadnought's attacks (i.e. I'd rather it was in line with C:BA then C:SM), nor the Venerable upgrade (again, because C:BA don't have access to that).

I'd say, as he is a special character let him have back the old blender attacks.

Space Wolves stole it from us on MURDERfang the MURDERcurseborn with his MURDERclaws...

But - if we're keeping him unique maybe something like an invuln to represent his sheer resistance to damage? 5++ is fine.

He should have the Character rule like Cassor too.

Tear attack isn't overpowered, pretty sure Ironclad's can get armourbane from one arm, so it's not too strong!

Just a minute, got to pull out the 3E codex supplement . . . ah, here we are, Moriar the chosen.

I'm going to post his rules in full (the book is from 1998 and the model is OOP), but the mods should feel free to take them down if they feel it violates the rules of the B&C.

Moriar 144pts WS 5 BS 4 S 6(10) Armour(F 12 S 12 R 10) I 4 A D6+2

Moriar is an Elites choice (paraphrasing)

Type: Walker

Crew: Brother Moriar (Space Marine)

Weapons: Two Dreadnought close combat weapons (bonus attack included in profile). Moriar has one built-in heavy flamer and one built-in meltagun

Options: Moriar is equipped with a searchlight and smoke launchers (reference excluded).

SPECIAL RULES

Tear Attack: As a Furioso Dreadnought, Moriar can use his two close combat weapons to tear apart enemy vehicles. Moriar rolls 2D6+Strength when working out armour penetration against vehicles.

Black Rage: Moriar must always move toward the enemy as fast as possible, and must assault an enemy within range in the assault phase.

Battle-frenzied: Moriar has a random number of attacks. For each round of combat that Moriar is fighting, roll D6+2 to determine the number of Attacks he receives. This includes his bonus attack for the two Dreadnought close combat weapons, but if he charges then he gains the additional +1 attack as normal (ie, D6+3 Attacks).

Rampage: It is near impossible to stop Moriar once he is in battle, as he simply ploughs [sic] into the enemy, disregarding any danger or damage to himself. Moriar therefore ignores andy 'Crew Shaken' and 'Crew Stunned' results on the Damage tables.

As you can see, some of the rules we have in 7th for DC dreads come from Moriar. I think you can use his rules as is, just replace "Dreadnought close combat weapons" with Power Fists, give him 3 HP, make him a character, and remember his Rampage special rule is different from the one in the MRB. This would be the most authentic. Also, his type should be Vehicle, Walker.
