richmarine
time for some Heresy, Finished off the invictus Suzerains, Took a long time to do as i did the shields and shoulder pads individually I was a bit disheartened to find that the shields covered up most of the fine detail work. Onto the last squad. Sorry for the quality of images. (although one does look as hes cowering behind his shield) The shoulder pads will fit if you fit the Ultra shoulder pad first. blu tack the power pack on, fit the eagle, then glue the power pack. there will be a gap in the power pack to torso but you'll never notice it. richmarine
So things have moved on somewhat since the last post. I’ve nearly finished my 1250 ZM list and I’m starting to think about expanding to 2K. All the tacticals are complete. I’ve used gloss to seal the minis, add decals and seal again. The effect is nice, and I’m not keen on flattening the ultra as the gloss seems to make them pop. Ultramarines 30k by Richard Jones, on Flickr Ultramarines 30k by Richard Jones, on Flickr I’ve also finished painting my praetor and called him “kaeso”. I’ve used a gladius and power sword as a “counts-as” paragon blade. The Pounder
Very neatly done! This force is amazing. I especially like the marbling on the Suzerain shields. Also the Praetor looks badass! Joe
I'd never thought to use the B@C Chaplain that way. orz
Fantastic looking Ultras! Can I ask how you did the marble effect on the shields? I've been trying to do some marble bases recently and they're not coming out as well as I'd like... richmarine
Fantastic looking Ultras! Can I ask how you did the marble effect on the shields? I've been trying to do some marble bases recently and they're not coming out as well as I'd like... Choose a base colour. I had to layer to white first. You can "float" the last white layer on which involves heavy watering down the white and floating it on top. When the water evaporates it should leave a smooth top layer of white. Then mix your main colour (white) with another to make a slightly dark tone and apply it in a staggered pattern across all of the area. You can be completely random, the idea is not to get any geometric shapes. Then mix up a dark tone. You want to create "faultlines" across the piece. The rule I use is to choose a direction and paint only in that direction. Keep the lines thin for a better overall look. Or look up Marble+colour and copy the pattern. I'd never thought to use the B@C Chaplain that way. I love it. c: Oh, if you're interested, we're in the process of organising an Ultramarines mini-event over on another part of the forums. If you're interested it'd be great to get some more input. I'll take a look at it. I was sick of cataphractii plate, you can achieve the same think with AA and iron halo but he can sweep with the suzies. Wow they look really crisp, awesome work! They have yet to battle yet. I'm sure the WE will **** em up in their first scrap. richmarine
A Few more images below of my progress; More or less completely finished my ultra-Zone mortalis force, 1250 points as stated in my original list. The only thing I’m thinking of changing is the grav guns on the breachers to meltaguns instead. The bases turned out great. I wanted to tie them in with Guillimans base so they look at home on a star ship or mustering fields of Calth. They were slightly modified GW 32mm bases. 32mm bases. Comments appreciated on someone’s experience on larger games of Ultras in 30K and what to include besides the usual Spartan. Really tempted by a Leviathan though. richmarine
Wow, haven't posted anything since September! Everything that I have left for my ultras is now Blue at least. Since seeing the new HH Box I have decided to leave the calth minis for something else. I just think MK3 suit ultra marines. I've also magnetised the "dozer Blade" to the rhino as I quickly found out that they don't transport well with them on. Do people use the FW blades that come with the demios rhino as dozer blades? For the scorpius I am trying out the scheme from book 5 colour plate. I haven't got a picture but I'm trying to trim the armour with gold. I now regret that decision. I'm definitely keeping the rhino plainish looking. and hopefully make it pop with decals. richmarine
Been Slowly working on the "last" of my ultramarine vehicles. They have been a bit of chore. Thinking of doing something different to break up the blue white and gold. Any ideas (besides Soh Green)? All Decals and base colours are done. Tracks are going to be done last. Sealing and weathering next, the idea is to gloss over everything, paint chips. I didn't do this on the scorpious. applied chips and then decals and then touched up the decals and gold trim again and now it looks odd. The land raider should look better. Used the Forge world to identify a praetor, chaplain and medic on board, with some invictus emblems to represent the suzerains. Once sealed I'll apply blue paint chips to the decals for minor damage. The images are a bit dark as the sun has disappeared and I'm not one for light boxes. Father Mapple
Don't know how I've missed this Ultramarine thread. It's great! I like your conversions on the chaplain, and those 40k upgrade sprues make great MkIV shoulder pads for veterans. I think your style is super nice and neat, and expertly executed. richmarine
There are lots of blogs in the age of darkness forum, I've spent hours looking through them, much to the detriment of my own painting. lots of inspiration. Anyway, I've added tracks and need to seal the lot and weather it with oils and powders. I've intentionally not done any weathering on any of the vehicles so i can do it all at once. richmarine
As 2016 draws to a close i've managed to finish off the last remaining unpainted model for a fresh start to 2017. My new FW models are currently drying off after a good cleaning. Next year i plan to finally game with these chaps. hopefully with the new models they'll be at 2K. and then it will be a matter of deciding what new units to add to make it a 2.5K heresy army. Choices are a levi in a drop pod. or to go it cheap and have a contemptor with dual CCWs with grav with a chainfist in a Pod and something else. Onto the pics... Happy New Year!
