Pre ETL

Hello!

I painted a test model for the Dark Angels last week. This is what I've come up with.

He was a gift from WLK last year that I have only just gotten around too.

For a while I wasn't sure I'd ever paint this one.

I ordered one BaC set, 3 tac squads and 1 Terminator Squad all from BaC as well as 9 Jet Bikes and some extra weapons to kitt out a few models.

The BaC tac marines and set have arrives already, the rest will begin to arrive over the next weeks and into May.

So far I've done the test model and textured all the bases for the models that have arrived. (68 bases in all not counting the test model above.

It's a little difficult to get excited about so much black but I do think it looks reasonable. I'll be looking for little spots to add some extra colors and details.

In total it will only be these 82 models in the first vow. I will put them all into the same group to save me time later.
If I have the time and the funds I'd like to complete a second vow but we'll see.

I'm also going to do a ETL supper post on my blog filled with most everything I post in this thread as well. I've already started that and plan to publish it at the end of ETL.

Are you planning on doing any future robes in gray, like this fellow's hood? I don't think I've seen it done that way, but it looks really promising on this guy!

I am actually trying to copy your work.....
I just have trouble being sure of the colors you've used because of the lighting in your pictures. lol.
I'd looked around for other painted first Legion models before I got started but couldn't seem to find what I thought I was looking for. So I went lootin....  

 

I'm not a fan of the robes on the 40K models at all now days. I think that there are usually too many now days. But I started playing 40K way back in 2nd ed when there were only a small hand full available which felt very inner circle to me. So that's how I'd like to do it again. Just a few if any. The hood was partially there to mark him out as special, maybe he's a psyker? 

I'd love to add some Dark Green but so far I haven't figured out how or where  put it on. 

As way of an update, All the models I ordered are either here or now in the USA! 
And I've built up and textured all the bases for all the models that have arrived.
I've also clipped for all the models glued them and primed them black with the bases. Everything else is still on the sprues.

The only model I might not vow is the Praetor, the Plastic TDA commander seems very fixed in his equipment. I have other plans for his weapons so He may be the second vow along with whatever else.

I've gone on long enough. lol.

Anyway I'm honored you think my stuff is good enough to use as a baseline . I'm just kinda winging it and hoping it looks as good as everybody else's awesome stuff.

As for the green, just keep an eye out for details that'll look nice. It's a tertiary color so don't feel bad if not every guy has it on him! I'll add a short tutorial along with whatever I do for my next update. It's pretty easy, enough so that I can do it!

I was looking at some of the pictures in retribution and they make the Marines look rough. Yours do as well, just with more color to see. I was a bit down at the thought of painting black. Mostly because you prime them black and your done, where the fun in that!

I think you have the right idea about adding the green. Sounds like a good and interesting idea. 
It's funny, in the picture there they are basically grey. 
I know it'll all work it self out.

Update.
Some more of my models have arrived! the Apothecaries and some "choom!" But the jet bikes are missing... though Ebay thinks they have been delivered. I'll check again later this week. If they fail to arrive I'll work that out. I have time. Looks like I have to work up a few more bases now!

Update.

My Contemptor is now standing on it's base and I may have glued it down ....but I don't thing I glued it together.. I may have a small problem... Oh well. And the apothecaries are standing on their textured bases and primed black. 

I sent an email to the seller of the models that came in inquiring about any more tracking information. Ebay thinks the jet bikes were in the package that arrived and I'm wondering it customs removed them, they weren't listed on the invoice on the out side of the box. Hope I hear back this week. I'm sure it'll work it self out.

Screen shot the invoice/packing slip if they can't provide further proof that it shipped, and then if you need file a claim. Ebay is harsh with sellers, so I'm sure you won't have an issue.

Right you are. 
I received back a massage from the seller we're starting to work it out. I just asked that I am sent tracking numbers. I was told they hadn't yet been shipped. I'm sure it'll all work out ok. If things get strange I'll sick Ebay on um. But I feel there will be a positive outcome.

Shipping from over seas was quick enough that I think I'll have all my models in before the 15th. 
I'll update again soon. I'm working on some terrain today. and plan to texture the base for my Leviathan this evening. I', thinking about rebasing my other contemptor to match what I've done already. So maybe I'll do that as well.

Update.

as of yesterday evening My Contemptor and Leviathan are now rebased and all primed black. At first I felt a little bad about that but only a little.

Just waiting for more models to arrive and will likely start to put the marines together the rest of the way.

I have a few questions and wonder if anyone has any thought on them.

First, Can I use the new Dark Angels Tactical objective cards and Psyker powers?
I don't know if there are any restrictions in this area.

I also have one of the Dark Angel flyers in a box yet to be built. I have it and would like to use it. Again, any issues with that? It occurred to me I might be able to because Land Speeders are in the Legion list. Same, Same?

I'd expect Space Wolves to be able to use their flying transports, who's names I can't seem to remember, in the same manner.
Although I could see argument against this.

I'm unsure about the psyker powers but the Tactical objectives should be fine if you clear it with the other guy first.

 

As for the Nephilim/Dark Talon, they sadly are not currently available for us to use officially(like the other 40k DA stuff isn't). Maybe we'll get to use the nephilim(hoping for it to get an actual avenger bolt cannon if that's true), but personally I think it's kind of a toss up.

 

Good news, though: If you build the flyer with the TL Lascannon and bombs it is a pretty good substitute for a Lightning Strike Fighter. It's a nifty all-around harrier and you should be able to use it in the game(the armament is the same), as always that kind of thing is up to you and your opponent, but I don't really see an argument against it.

I know RR and I use the objective cards, but that's because we both like Maelstrom missions

 

I'd say no to the rest.

They are built for a different (and less balanced) game system. Just my .02

I didn't figure the Objective cards would be a problem I'm surprised if the Powers would be an issue given how savage some disciplines are.  Although I can understand why they might be frowned upon. As they do attack leadership.
Again, it's just stuff I have that I would like to use at some point.

What? I just checked with the Lion and he said psykers are all co-I mean, psykers should not use their powers, the council of Nikea must be upheld against you sorcerous traitors!

 

I wonder where that chaplain guy Nemiel went...

 

I digress, there's also the point that Interromancy was developed by the Inner Circle to interrogate the Fallen, and neither of those groups(technically) exist yet. Given the Dark angels reinstated their librarius they may get a couple nifty psyker things but I kinda doubt it. Unless they make Zahariel a special character.

While the DA restore their Librarius, they haven't the time or motivation to create the special abilities of the DA 40k.

To be honest I'll likely just use the standard set of tactical objective cards. I can't see opening the Dark Angels card set. It's still sealed and would only provide a small handfull of unique cards. If I do use a psyker I want it to feel like a special occasion. The Lion didn't completely ignore Nikea after all. 

At any rate it's good to get a consensus well in advance of making to many plans.

I did indeed make it to the post office and have more assembly and whatnot to do. 
I'm giving thought to another BaC set. But maybe in a month or two. Sadly I would like to add more Jet bikes but it's more cost effective to buy full BaC sets that Jet Bike squads.
Just more random noise in my head.

Just this morning I ordered 10 more BaC plastic terminators. Should have them next week (or sooner!)
I'm hesitant to buy another full BaC set though I keep finding them at a good price on line.
Not much else to report, just starting to look at how to assemble the Jet bikes ans I've clipped most of the BaC tac marines off the sprues and bagged all the parts. 
Really getting sick of all this waiting around. Also not thrilled with the sill points cap on the vows. 
So I may not vow at all and just paint my army and be happy. I'm estimating maybe 3 weeks if all the models are here when I start. Assembly is the hardest part of the whole project. 
Haven't made my mind up yet.

I wouldn't get too discouraged. We're all in the same boat with the waiting, although if the urge is too much you have to do what you have to do. And why the upset-ness on the 3k cap? 15k is a lot of models, even for HH.

I understand what your saying. I just see the points cap as getting in the way of progress I will be making. I just find it irksome.

 

I may just do my own thing so I don't complain and muck things up.
