Planning For a Night Lords Starter Army

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to start a night lords 30k army as a reward for myself after my exams are over (23rd of june) but I need help planning it out.

I'm pretty set on using Sevatar and the terror assault rite of war (with volkite terror squads) but apart from that i have no idea even where to begin.

Do I infiltrate the terror squads and put Sevatar in a retinue of some sort or do I put them in drop pods?#

On top of this i also need things like modelling advice on how to make my terror squads look good without having to buy the expensive upgrade kits.

I really need some help here. anything would be appreciated.

Get an idea of what you want, which it sounds like you already have, then check out the night lords tactica thread in the other subforum.  I'm pretty new to 30k and my initial list design changed dramatically based on reading/feedback with the other members here, so try to spend some time in the threads before committing money to models.  From what i have seen, the great hing about 30k is that you can basically build a list around whatever unit you think is cool and it will work.  From an initial buy stand point, i don't think you can go wrong with a BaC box...cheapest source of marine bodies around.

What Sparc said. The tactica thread will be a lot of help for building the main core of the army. Quite a few people put the 3 squads in drop pods or dreadclaws, but now as you're unable to stay in a pod the turn it arrives, infiltrating has become more popular. For making the terror squads themselves, start with a BaC, then maybe split one pack of heads and bodies between the three squads? Not everyone needs to be totally blinged up. You can always plunder other GW kits for trophies or ccws to use with the BaC box to make your guys look unique and different from regular tacticals. Not everyone has to be wearing a NL helm, painting a skull on works just as well in some cases.

To further the advice above, just split one or two heads/body kits from forgeworld alongside a betrayal at calth. That should be a good start.

Several has a good rule that can synergise well with deep striking terminators so your cataphractii shouldn't go to waste

Infiltrate is a good build to start with, as it is cheaper cash-wise, and is a good way to enter without having to shell out for drop pods.

You will probably need to buy the volkite upgrades from forgeworld Too mind.

As for ideas for conversions, the standard chaos space marine and raptor chainsword arms and pistols kitbash really well with the b@c marines. So that can help to make the squads look a little more savage.

I've also seen grey knight halberds mixed with chainswords to make cool looking glaives.

Checking out the tactics forum is a good call too as others have pointed out. There's few units that you can go wrong with in heresy, but it's good to know you are getting the right mix
