Red Wolves? Awesome! :tu:

Congratulations for competing Vykril, any chance you'll vow again?

UPDATED TO THIS POINT!

Apologies for the absence my fellow wolf lords. I am just now getting over my ailment. Was a battle for the ages between my sinuses and an infection plus the insane ammounts of pollen where i live. My body has finally prevailed! Updates as soon as i get home today.

Red Wolves? Awesome! :tu:

Congratulations for competing Vykril, any chance you'll vow again?

UPDATED TO THIS POINT!

Not much on the baby blue. Grungy metals and red seem more appropriate for space Vikings ;)

I do have a Heralds of Ruin kill team I've been thinking to vow, Long Fang pack, Grey Hunter pack, Lone Wolf. Been trying to decide if I want to paint them in my leadbelcher/red scheme or the scheme I used on my scouts. Also have some BaC Cataphractii being assembled. Shoyld have a 2nd vow following soon.

Thanks for the support guys.

4 hours noodling with the airbrush.

Tried some pre-shading on the land raiders with mixed success, all the rest was primed black.

By Jove, the airbrush is fun!!

This is the first time I have tried something beyond priming, and although I am a little inconsistent still, I think I am doing okay.

Any advice from airbrushers out there would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know what you think.

PS this was using an el cheapo £70 airbrush set, looking forward to saving and seeing what I could do with a Badger or Iwata brush.

Dos needle thickness affect the paint?

What do you guys think does it look good or needs something  more?

I'm liking your tanks Dantay your air brush work looks great

Looks good! I would be perfectly happy with that effect!

So, I now - FINALLY - added pictures to my vow. (Captain Semper: Please check if the grade of paint on the Rhino and Cataphractii are okay. I just didn't want to paint another layer upon that Blood Claws halfway-good looking face. And the Cataphractii were a test that went... awry - so they'll get another coat anyway.)

But I'm still missing a proper picture of my Blood Claws... because those were supposed to be 19 in 3 packs, not one big pack. So I'll have to add that on the weekend.

If all goes well, I'll have all my work finished by Friday evening... ...and then I'll be free to paint to my heart out.

@ dantay: Great that you use the ETL to experiment with the airbrush - that's what the ETL is for! And it's something I'd like to try myself...

@ RikuEru: Yeap, they're fine! :)

UPDATED TO THIS POINT!

Hello guys.

So back with a stormfang close to completion. I wished I had finished it yesterday, but no. There are a few things remaining. But it should be ok tonight.

First the pictures :

Stormfang brush3 A

Stormfang brush3 B

Stormfang brush3 C

Stormfang brush3 D

Then a little more feedback on the new gloss washes.

At first glance, Ithought it was ok.

But, in fact not that fine.

1 - The fact is, on metals, the shadows are not glossy. It's intereesting though on the intermediary parts.

2 - It would be better if they had a more gelified consistancy. Would be easier to work them. I want a thick and non transparent aspect on shadow and a thin and more and more transparent aspect on intermediary areas.

3 - Need several passes to obtain consistant shadows

4 - F***ing difficult to work further with metallic paint afterwards. The paint can't stop sliding and the blending is random.

Still, I think that with practice and combined with brown paint it can be a new and quicker way for me to do true metallic paint.

And I'm curious about what they can give on smaller areas : infantry for exemple.

@ Brother Callidan : Yes, that's a cool (or rather hot in truth ^^) effect. To push it further, you could maybe do a last enlighting with 50/50 white and orange. In the recesses. But if you prefer let it that way, it also works just fine.

@ Danty : quite a good airbrush work ! Don't hesitate to accentuate the contrasts. I too was shy with the blendings first. The thing is, with the airbrush, you don't need as many color blending as with regular brush.

You still need to gain a bit of precision (the shadows on the front ramps of your caestus for exemple), but with practice you'll get it.

It's a matter of thiing your paints, and opulling the trigger.

It's a bit of a shortcut, but :

- the more you thin, the less you need pressure

- the less pressure you have, the closer you can be to the mini without having a "spiderplash"

- the more closer, the less you need to pull the trigger, and so, the more precision you have.

And that "pressure, dilution, distance" thing, while described, cannot be fully understood unless you practice it.

So pratice, practive practice. And thin.

Hope it helped.

G.

Brother Callidan, that effect looks great! Which colours did you use?

There is an effect for the jump packs in the master tips thread, but in blue

Well done on adding the pictures Riku. I hope the vow is progressing nicely

Gnenthaal: That is a good write up on the gloss washes. So it dries matt in the recesses but gloss on the higher areas?

The gloss is too slippery for the paint?

Sounds like I will stick to normal washes and just gloss varnish if required at the end.

Also thanks for the airbrush tips. I was doing research and I get what you are meaning. This video, goes into it a little bit I think.

Is it any good?

Okay, so I have been experimenting with my airbrush.

I got it at Christmas and it was a super cheap set, consisting of compressor with moisture trap, hose and 2 dual action airbrush guns.

Got to say it is a lot of fun!!

Anyway before starting  I did a fair amount of research and while a lot of folks do how to videos, a lot do not go into much detail on pressures etc.

For those starting out like me, I hope that some of this proves useful.

This goes from what to buy through to some basic and intermediate techniques

If anyone has any other tutorials or videos which might be useful, or you feel I have missed anything let me know, so I can add it to the repository of knowledge

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think.

Total - 485 pts

Succes will bring glory to the Fang, Allfather and Russ, failure will burden me with badge of the Oathbreaker until end of the year.

great work so far by everyone! really hoping i can pull some extra time out of the bag somewhere and get some models primed and a vow submitted before the 15th.

Been very busy as in the studio at the end of the month recording, but keep telling myself i should be able to fit at least a small vow in......

Thanks Dan.

we are having loads of fun with this. Or atleast I am since I have discovered the joys of airbrushing.

Just chuck your vow in before the 15th, even if it is only 1 model.

As Tesco says "Every little helps".

PS what are you recording??

Thanks Dantay and Gnenthaal.

Dantay the paints are a base coat of Mephiston Red then Jokaero Orange followed by Fire Dragon Bright

Gnenthaal I might do what you suggested after I paint up all five of the Skyclaws. It's definitely something to think about

So, another few hours messing around with the airbrush yesterday.

The greys are pretty much done.

I had a few issues with the airbrush, with it clogging. Not sure if the pressure is set too low or if I put too much paint in the cup.

Putting a touch more thinner in helped out.

20160610 154536

I did a comparison againt the finished Spartan to make sure the greys match and it is pretty close. The Spartan will have taken 8-10 hours on its own to get the greys done. So far 6-7 hours has got 5 land raiders, 2 predator sized tanks a Caestus, a Typhon and 2 drop pods so a similare state.

The grey highlights still feel a little soft, so I am thinking to do a small amount of edge highlighting with administratum grey, and possibly some blacklining with agrax to finish off

20160610 154634

This is my work bench :D

20160610 154700

For contrast, I have decided to do the underside of my Caestus with Dawnstone and high light to administratum grey.

Edge highlights will be with longbeard grey.

20160610 154625

I think the two-tone effect works well.

What do you think?
