What's the crack with editing Vows?

I gave my dudesmen a bunch of upgrades that, IRL, I'll never actually use to bump the points value, but my Vow doesn't count to the points total anyway as it was late.

And does an edited Vow count as a new Vow? I Vowed three units, one of which I have subsequently completed. Are they now ineligible for my edited Vow?

Also, would it be cheeky if I try passing off a Razorback as a Predator?

If the armament were right, and perhaps you beefed up the armour a bit, personally I'd accept it. Want to see it, even. smile.png

@SlaveToDarkness - Yes you can as it's already been done in the Codex ETL by Chrysaor the Giant:

Sweet, now I just need to make mine look like its been through hell and back in a cityfight environment. Ill see what treasures google images will grace me with.

Another day, another two tanks down, I've got three more tanks to go and then its onto the titan! I'm really happy with how the effects came out for the plasma weapons on the executioner but as always the stripes will get reworked at some point but for now they will do. Of course once I get a few battles under their belt I plan on adding kill tallies and slogans and such onto the models but only after they have actually done something. More pictures of each will be in my WIP thread in my sig. Enough yapp'n here are the pics!

I have got to say, this kit was a blast to work with. Completed Helbrute inbound!

And hey, while I was at it, I built this big guy to be magnetized for all the weapon options (except heavy bolter). Bonus pics!

Well alright then. With that done, I'll move on to the... oh, wait, no... hang on... there's nothing left... that means...

VOW COMPLETED.

I'm done, chaps. That's 1045 points we can all tally for the glory of Chaos. Group shot!

And hey, since I've still got over a month left to go... Vow 2!

I, Scourged, rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX and vow to complete a Chaos Lord shown below from Codex: Chaos Space Marines of total value points 140 on or before August 15th, 2016. Success will bring eternal glory to the Scourged and all of Chaos, and failure will doom me to bear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until year-end.

I've had him hanging around my bench for a long time, so I figure I'll finally paint him up and do him justice. For the purposes of ETL, he's counted as having power fist, combi-melta, sigil of corruption, and mark of Tzeentch, thus all adding up to the 140. I thought about grabbing some cultists or those extra Raptors I have, but... eh, I'd rather just paint one figure and know I'll finish in time instead of rush and risk it with many. Plus, more points than those!

WIP

In these dark days tragedy knocks on every door and calls out to the young and old, the rich and poor alike. Prophesies of doom are as common as flies over a decaying corpse. Most should be ignored as the ravings of madmen, but some hold a kernel of truth that must be heeded at all cost....

The goal was to paint the Kranon model in Black Legion colors with some Tzeentch flair. Shaky hands got the best of me, and I slipped up several times. Trying harder only made it worse. Then I just decided to not worry about the trim so much and go back in with black later, along with the minor colors. This is where he stands now.

The disc... I had this idea to make a Dark Mechanicus disc of Tzeentch using two square Nurgling bases as a surface, cover it with cut up sprue pipes, and have flaming corks as jet propulsion, and as something lifting the lord off of the disc so he would float magically or what not. Then I wanted to add a familiar made out of an old goblin carrying the Tzeentch standard, and make him less goblin-like with some reconstructive surgery to the face with clippers and knife, and some flaming hair that would meld him to the disc. The standard was beyond salvaging after my brushes hit it, so I'm giving him a chainsaw pole arm.

Any suggestions on salving this, I really want to move on to my helbrute?

I don't think the lord came out bad at all, only that the paint was laid on a little thick. The disc....hmmm thats a bit trickier. You want him riding on spars of metal and given that you are going with the tzeentch feel I think it would be better to not using the two bases mixed into it and making it so...one level. It's tzeenitch, making it look like a pile of metal was simply pulled together in a hodgepodge would give it a more chaotic feel.

I really like those. :tu:

I suppose if you combine a predator kit and a razorback kit you could get one of those 'Predators', and a 'razorback' equipped with the predator turret. Which would be cool.

I love that muzzle! Excellent stuff.

Carrack, I'd say the Lord is fine. You can always do some tidy-up at a later date.

When I'm painting something very fine I try Firepower's recommendation of holding the model in your left hand, brush in the right, put both elbows on the desk and rest your wrists against each other (so the insides of your wrists touch). You can't get a steadier painting pose.

For the disk, you could make the fire on the cork bits how I did the flames for my flamer-armed raptor: put superglue on the bit, dip it in (clump) foliage and slowly build up bulk by repeating it.

For the disk itself I might remove the circles on the bits of sprue, or alternatively put some form of decoration atop those circles. A decal, skull or spike.

Or if you wanted it to be a random conglomeration of metal, as Gorrched suggested, why not rebuild it with sprue, putting pieces at wilder angles rather than just horizontal, and sharpen the tips of some?

For the imp I'd suggest a red or purple shade over his skin, perhaps then highlighted with the base colour again.

You could always take a day or two off to work on the Helbrute and come back to the Lord, if they're both in the same vow...?

@ Carrack: First of all, relax: You'll save that Lord yet, and you'll put him on a disc and it will all work out in the end -- you still have five weeks left, after all ;)

Now the Lord himself doesn't look half-bad! You did maybe go a bit heavy on the metallics, but that should be easy enough to adjust with some washes later on. I really like the colour you've chosen for the cape, and the fur seems quite alright as well. So far, so good!

I can only echoe the other guys' suggestions regarding touching your hands together while painting finicky stuff -- it has been a lifesaver for me more than once! As an alternate variant, you can also link your thumbs, as that might give you a greater sense of mobility than joining your wrists- Beyond that, take heart in the knowledge that you have chosen a very detailed and very complicated model. Just take your time and approach it with a fresh perspective now, and you'll push through. And it'll feel really sweet once you've managed to finish this! ;)

As for the disc, look, I don't want to sound like a mean bastard here, but I also don't want to needlessly sugarcoat this: I think that part of the model is beyond saving, and not merely due to the paintjob, but because the concept itself is flawed: Making sprue look like anything other than, well, sprue, is an exercise for true masters (I can safely say I haven't managed it yet), and I think you'll need to go back to the drawing board with this. Now I don't know the contents of your bitzbox, but here are a couple of ideas, off the top of my head, what you could use to build an alternate disc:

  • the disc could be some kind of (round) shield, held up by horrors or skeletons or flames or tentacles
  • you could use some of those spiked half-circles that come with the chaos vehicle sprue to create an outer rim for the base, then add a round piece of plasticard (easily cut from an old phone card, credit card, bank card or what have you) on top and work from there
  • you could also interpret the concept of the flying disc more liberally, going for a mutant carrying the Lord on his back, a pair of sentinel legs with the Lord standing atop them or stuff like that -- just think outside the box while staying inside your bitzbox, so to speak -- ba-dum tish! ;)

But seriously, while coming up with a new recipe at this point may require a bit of work, I think it's preferrable to trying to salvage that first attempt. I hope you'll take this as constructive criticism from a fellow converter! :)

Aaanyway, I have also managed to finish my third ETL vow today: One Bloodthirster coming right up:

Ghor'Lash'Kharganath, the Gorelord, the Ever-Wrathful, Chosen Hunter of Khorne

3rd ETL Vow finished!

Many more pictures, as well as a closer look at the base, can be found here in my WIP thread.

Brothers. I am so very close to completion. I reckon a couple of hours, tops. Sadly, it'll have to be tomorrow, because I am shattered and if I try and push on I'll probably screw up something royal.

Dragonlover

Well I'm calling vow 3 done....pics will be up tomorrow.

This vow has literally killed my mojo and I'm not happy with the majority of it but If I do any more to it I'll probably end up jumping up and down on the lot, but here's hoping painting some Khornate gentlemen will give it me back.

Vow 4 will be added after the pics of 3 are up :tu:

I feel your pain, I cant be bothered with finishing off the last few Nurgling bases. This vows killing me.

VOW 1 complete. Pics to prove it:

I might try and do a second vow, but I genuinely don't know yet. Time hasn't been kind to me lately through a few work issues. But we shall see.

Good luck everyone, and may the Dark Gods bless you all.

Well done Beachymike, a timely completion and a great one at that! Now take your time and make sure, if you are to vow again, that you'll make it to the finish line! Better safe than sorry! :)

Alright, here is vow 4:

I gaurdian31 rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX and vow to complete:

Khârn the Betayer:160 pts.

Undivided Daemon Prince with wings, power armor and Murder Sword: 240pts.

and Daemon Prince of Khorne (from Khorne Daemon Kin) with Kor'Lath the Axe of Ruin and combat familiar (the sword): 235pts.

from Codex Chaos Space Marines and Khorne Daemon Kin of total value 635 points on or before August 15th, 2016. Success will bring eternal glory to Chaos and failure will doom me to bear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until the year-end.

Great follow-up! Now make sure you'll see it through, there is a lot a stake!

Since this is an out-of-competition vow, that's fine. Feel free to edit your vow to bring it to your liking. In fact some adjustments to the vows are allowed after their made, assuming it's of a fine-tuning nature, like altering the load-out of a character or a vehicle. Obviously changing your vow in a significant way it's not allowed (like adding or subtracting entire units or changing the main armament in a vehicle) but small adjustments can slip through. ;)

Great completion - and a sizeable one too! :tu: And good to see you went for another! Good luck and remember: there is a lot at stake now! ;)

THAT IS AN IMPRESSIVE MINI! Boy that Bloodthirster rocks! Congratulations mate - fantastic work!

So it's Friday already! I'll try to get the update early on Saturday because I'll have a busy weekend (Saturday is the proper day anyway) so I'll be looking here maybe another time today, but then that's it for this week! So if you want your vow to boost this week's stats, now is the time!

UPDATED TO THIS POINT!

You guys are doing great keep cracking on at your own pace! I'll probably be back next week with more vows but for now in taking a rest. It can become quite soul crushing to work on the same thing long after it has burnt you out. Maybe take a break and paint something else for a week, or perhaps lower your standards abit and claim it earlier.

Either way when your that close, you've already won!

I'm still super chuffed with my effort. I'm not sure what I'll vow we'll just have to see how it goes. As ever I'm more excited about building new things than I am about painting what I already have :D

@KSci: GREAT looking BT there, wow!! Congrats on a very succesful ETL (for now? ;) ). Also, your advice re:Carrack's dics is perfect. Constructive, honest, positive. :tu:

@Dragonlover: ooooh one more day! I'll send you some good hobby vibes!

@STD: white undercoat, washes, hairdryers and drybrushing are your friend when it comes to painting nurgling bases!

Now for me, I have just undercoated the Socaran and will get him done this weekend. I have a huuuge apocalypse game on a 6'x10' table at the GW Amsterdam South store tomorrow, for which I'll be bringing a huuuuge Night Lords armoured spearhead and bloodying my Khornate Daemon Engine detachment. 8000 points of wysiwyg painted madness!!! So in the following week I'll be finishing my second vow, after which I'll make a huge third one.

^^^ are you going to take lots of photos of the game and update your thread Auggie?

I'm sorry Krautscientist I cannot compliment you on your vow, I'm still waiting for the envy to pass. Same goes for most everybody's work. I love the chaos ETL as the colours and range of miniatures are always so vibrant! Just post more photos everybody please. :D
