Lies, Deceit and Treachery, All Meaningless Before Iron -WIP

Iron Hands 79th Company +++ The Emperors Lantern +++

Hey guys, I have finally started painting my Iron Hands and I figure I might as well start a log on my progress. Now be warned, I am a slow painter who moves at a snails pace, so updates may be few and far between. While I like to convert when I can, I want my Iron Hands to look more uniform, so if awesome conversions is what you seek, you may have better luck searching elsewhere. Finally, I am no great painter but as a airbrush beginner myself who struggled to get things right, I hope my work can help or inspire anyone to paint a awesome Iron Hands force. With that all said lets get cracking with my first legion marine.

Not quite sure how to post large clear photos, so please excuse the growing pains, I may need to fix the photo when I get home from work.

Its hard to see the purple and green below the black. I will try and upload a better picture later showing the layering of Tamiya clear paints. Suggestions and criticisms are welcome.

even with these small images the green and purple base is visible and distinguishable. looks very interesting! now please share your technique, in detail!

imho the silver trim could need a wash and/or a brighter highlight. unsure if it is finished, or if you need a suggestion at all but here is an idea: first and foremost the black is quite interesting and the layering makes it rich - the silver looks a bit flat against it. second the metallic shine of the trim could be used to help bring out the colored black. if you had not used two colors i would simply suggest a contrast color like dark blue against a warm brown-black. But now i suggest to try an umber wash over a light bronze color gaze and then silver highlights and see where that goes. what it does (in theory) is that the shadows will be warmer than the highlight, which would look much cooler. that (then) blueish silver would harmonized with the purple and green (which both are less cold). the even warmer recesses then again would look further away/deeper although they were probably still lighter than the black of the rest of the uniform. so a simple cold-warm contrast would make the trim details stand out stronger. obviously you could do it the other way around as well (warm metallic highlights and dark-blueish shadows).

also best of luck with your Iron Hands and this log!

edit: you might want to try taking a new picture on a brighter day without direkt sunlight and against a background/on a surface that is less reflective than the model itself!

Thank you for the kind words. I will do a tutorial with the next marine. I agree the silver is too flat, I tried a lot of different things to try and change it but I never tried the warm silver. I picked up the Bronze and Umber/light brown wash yesterday to try tonight/ tomorrow. I will update with the results when I have some. Thank you for the advice!

Apparantely you haven't read The Seventh Serpent. :P

On a more serious note though. A "lightbox" to photograph your models in doesn't have to be advanced. I use white pieces of paper to make the background when I take my photos. Google "Lightbox photography" and you'll get some ideas about what to do.

Alright, I have done some glazes and washes of the silver. I may have to touch up redo later but for right now it looks okay I think. I will have some free time this weekend to paint and I really want to get my leviathan done so I may attempt that later.

So here are my two legionnaires, the picture keeps loading on its side so hopefully it doesn't come in weird. To address the better pictures I will be working on that this weekend. @Excessus Thank you, I will look into whipping one up tomorrow.

Thanks guys

Hey guys, quick update, started the leviathan. I wanted the head to be white so I sprayed that first, then while I waited for it to dry, I went to find my cleaner to clear away the white. I found some missing magnets while I was searching and got distracted magnetizing my Preator to have a open hand or Volkite Charger. I forgot to clear out the white paint and it dried in the airbrush... So I was set back a day. I will be trying to wrap the Leviathan and the Preator over the next couple days.

Here are the base coats.

Hey guys, started the Leviathan dreadnaught yesterday, I tried to make the helmet white but it looked weird. The green was too bright and with the blue already on the lights the white, copper, green, silver and purple he started to look like a rainbow. So I tried to paint his helmet dark silver with a line of copper. I still have a lot of work but here is how he is looking as of now.

Also making a lightbox tomorrow and will be using my girlfriends high quality camera, so expect better photos soon.
