Thanks – I get a lot of my ideas from history books, so don't skimp :biggrin.:

Double-post today:

The Ultramarines have a reputation for being upright, proud and strait-laced, which is certainly built on foundations of truth. However, none of those clad in cobalt and gold are identical in character. There is a great variety of imbalance in humours amongst the Legion; some erring towards a choleric disposition, while others are generally sanguine or bilious. Mostly, such imbalances are drilled out during training; but in some cases they prove intractable.

Such warriors are tolerated if their deficiences or exuberances prove to be of no detriment to themselves or their comrades. Since the time of Gren Vosotho, the War-born had harboured a peculiar and unlikely mix that – perhaps owing to the influence of their geneseed – nevertheless came to prove more than the sum of its parts. Indeed, many officers even post-Guilliman show certain eccentricities – impulsiveness, bravado, or a peculiar sixth sense – that have proven to be a great benefit to the Legion and underscored their individual advancement.

Whether the following troublemakers of the 190th prove to be future Officers or swiftly-cooling corpses is still to be played out...

Brother Anandates, Corinthian

IMG_4423.JPG

Part of the field-intake of replacements necessary for the Corinithians, who had suffered catastrophic casualties during a raid against greenskin pirates, Brother Anandates has proven both capable with a support weapon and insubordinate to a fault; indulging in non-standard kill markings and aesthetic vandalisation of his wargear. Not yet red-marked, he has skirted perilously close to the line on more than one occasion in his short field-life.

Brother Spiriculus, Squad Secundus (190th)

IMG_4421.JPG

In contrast, Brother Spiriculus is devoted, drilled and conscientious... and seemingly catastrophically unlucky. It seems the fates have a dark sense of humour for Spiriculus, and he has become something of an ill-luck totem for his squad . As a result, squad cohesion has been slow to materialise amongst the inexperienced members of squad Secundus.

Three WIP Breachers. The blue and gold's all done, so just markings, weathering and basing to complete.

These poor chaps have been sat in a figures case while other projects – Court of the Sun King, Officia Monstrosa, May You Live Forever – have ticked over, and with a game coming up on Thursday, it's about time I got them painted.

IMG_4446.JPG

There are currently three nigh-finished members – the sergeant, squad leader and a red-helmed rotter. They need a few minor tweaks and basing, but I'm happy with how they're looking; certainly good enough to plop on a table to be swiftly removed!

Thanks! The swords are from the Forge World weapon packs – I kept an eye out on trading sites and eBay until I had enough. I think Forge World have a pack of specialist shields and similar gladius-shaped power swords coming out soon, which will make future expansion a bit more convenient.

The officer corps are now ready for battle on Thursday, when the brave Ultramarines of the 15th/190th will be taking on 3000pts worth of Gashbag's TeknOrkracy, under the sterling leadership of Bob Hunk.

...and since I didn't post a complete image earlier, here's Highheart:

Awesome Ultramarines Apologist, especially like the Breachers!

You used the name Pullo for one of your more level-headed and organised characters? Madness!:tongue.:  (very nice, the geometric lightning bolts on the chest look excellent)

I understood that reference!

I make no apologies for terrible in-jokes :smile.:

What does Highheart have manacled to his left arm? Is it a scroll case?

Well, talking about terrible jokes... it's a personal weapon, called the Cateno Mandatum.

*rimshot* :biggrin.:

Holion is also excellent, you've really improved on the suzerain models with just a little reduction in bling. The axe, the shield and the helm are all more than enough to keep his status obvious, and go well with that grim cloak.

Cheers guys - it's a labour of [iMPERIAL MANDATED DUTY] for me, so I continue to enjoy the process of painting - that always makes things easier :)

In terms of the army list, it's essentially the three officers above leading 75 infantry and a few Dreadnoughts. There's a Land Raider and a couple of Rhinos in there, but at the core, it's a list that would be right at home in Rogue Trader, which pleases me more than it probably should.

Working on the markings for the Vigintii at the mo; that'll basically finish the list.

Man, Apologist, you're killing me. Any chance of a few pic of your battle against this illustrious sounding TeknOrkracy?

For you, amicus, it would be my pleasure. ;)

I'm intending to write an illustrated battle report about it; Bob Hunk's orks are something to see!

Squad Viginti

IMG_4455.JPG

Sergeant and four marines. The banner was painted with the new Iyanden Darksun (apologies, I can't remember the name) then washed with sepia ink. While wet, I used my thumb to wipe off the excess ink from the raised areas. Once dry, I used slightly diluted Iyanden Darksun to clean it up a bit, then added Dheneb Stone to the mix for highlights. The detail is all moulded on – I think the backpack is a metal piece from the character Sicarius.

Note the inclusion of an heraldic tilt shield – I'm really enjoying adding these to the occasional veteran.

IMG_4454.JPG

Squad leader and four marines. Being organised to a fault, the Ultramarines always have a chain of command in place. This fella doesn't have any in-game rules, but made a good excuse to have a bit more fun modelling – building lots of near-uniform models isn't the most exciting process, even if the end result is worth it.

IMG_4456.JPG

...and all together, plus Brother Letas (in the red helm of censure). The bases aren't complete, and nor are the squad markings. The little circles you can see on the shields will have an eta (η) symbol. Rather annoyingly, despite spending [sCRAPSHUNTERRORABORT] ages last night carefully painting in the Breacher Squad symbol (an inverted omega with a gladius through the centre) on every right shoulderpad, I forgot to get a pict-capture of any of them.

IMG_4450.JPG

You can just about make one or two out in this rather gloomy WIP picture, but you'll probably have to use your imagination for now. Regarding the markings, I couldn't resist adding a few little personalising details – the occasional CXC (for the 190th), legion numeral or additional Legion symbol here and there – but I've deliberately left them fairly neutral. These are, after all, new Ultramarines. Not quite raw recruits, but only just beginning to write their legends...

The white stripes on the shields make them a lot less bland, I might have to steal that!

I would not be so sure about putting white stripes to breachers, considering what often happens to the cadian "whiteshields", known for being decorated with a white stripe :D

Jokes aside, great stuff as usual, Apologist, and the pace at which you update is just astounding for guys like me, specially with that quality.

I was very tempted to do something a bit more elaborate on the shields; but on consideration will save that for the occasional veteran or specialist. Doing lots of intricate freehand is fun, but a good design can suffer from being repeated over and over again.

I'm looking forward to Forge World releasing the Ultramarines' upgrade pack with the moulded-on detail. That'll definitely spur me on to a second squad.

In the meantime, there are three more Breachers to add to Viginti, though these'll wait until after Thursday.

IMG_4459.JPG

I've also built a second Apothecary; though I'm not sure what unit he's best to join – the larger Tactical squads, or the more expensive Breachers?

IMG_4460.JPG

This chap has an augury scanner, as it's always useful to make sure the enemy's where you can see 'em.

Freakin fantastic man!! Look forward to a battle report :smile.:!
What list will you be running??

A simplified list:

  • HQ: Centurion with Legatine Axe and Boarding Shield, Chaplain with jump pack, Master of Signal with power maul.
  • Troops: Two 15-man Legion Tactical squads, one 10-man Breacher squad with Land Raider Proteus.
  • Elites: One apothecary, Contemptor dreadnought talon (one with multimelta, two with heavy bolters).
  • Fast Attacks: Two 10-man Seeker squads, each with a Rhino.
  • Heavy Support: One 5-man Heavy Support squad (heavy bolters), Deredeo Dreadnought with Anvilus Autocannons and Atomantic Pavaise.

3000pts on the button (once you throw in artificer armour for all the characters and various bits of wargear).

Talking of the Deredeo, here's a pic:

This sounds epic!!!

Excited to see the battle report.

Your marines are gorgeous as always... You really bring the Heresy to life, Apologist. Great stuff.

Oh, I'm flattered. :smile.:

Battle report sounds awesome! Also, Ultramarines vs Orks holds a special place in my heart, for that was my first ever 40k game back in the day.

I'll repost the events here, but keep an eye of Death of a Rubricist for updates on the report.

In the meantime, here's the Breacher symbols. Surprisingly quick to do, all things considered. The Ultramarines legion symbol is basically a mirrored '5', so adding a simplified gladius in the centre isn't much harder than the standard shape.

IMG_4466.JPG

I could, of course, have done this with transfers for a cleaner result, but I think this approach makes the markings fit in better with my painting style, and enables me to make tiny variations as the whim hits me, without losing consistency.
