XX in progress - Blackshield marauders drop in

Seeker squad complete. Various deathwatch and Sternguard bits involved, mainly for ammo, wrist auspex and backpack cams. My Exodus got demoted to the team but keeps his fancy long gun.

As one of my vets got promoted to Seekers so I had to replace him. Not fond of normal Vexillas so I cut one down to the wreath. Aim to do this for all squads now. Got plans for the offcut.

Next up, Medic!

A quickly kitbashed Master of Signal using a few spare parts.

The backpack is built up from the body of a melta gun, some pipes, a cam from the scions kit, and the aerial is off an old eldar jetbike.

The tiny flags are the inverted base of a vexalia, and the flags are based on old naval signal flags. "Stay back, dangerous cargo". They're also my initials.

Bolt pistol has a scope made from the barrel of an old eldar guardian lasgun (before they all got shuriken in 3rd edition). Not great but I enjoyed the recycling.

Deathwatch chest because the high collar seems appropriate for danger close. Deathwatch right arm because I love dem wrist computers.

The left arm is trimmed from the Missile launcher - I liked it as a scope and I think it helps distinguish this guy's role.

Refreshed my Delegatus. Working on some fluff for him and the rest now.

Any good sources for name inspiration?

Replaced his claw with a master-crafted thunder hammer, which also now needs a name. Still working out how to do a nice glow on the black. Wrist auspex for style and codebook on the belt.

Also added a crushed eagle vexilla to the base as is fitting.

Finished my first apothecary after three attempts at a colour scheme I'm happy with all the white.

The narthecium is the medic pistol from the scions kit, attached to a deathwatch arm, some scions tubes and a scout pistol. The backpack light is a sliced up melta-bomb. The waist vials are the ends of the command scrolls which I removed from the legs of the Calth chaplain. Waste not want not.

The legs are deathwatch spares but I trimmed the ankles and knee caps to try and stop it looking like mk8 and hopefully more heresy.

I've also started to bash together my next unit, some weapon master vets who'll be joined by the Delegatus and apothecary. A few power weapons and some drum mags for bolters for a more cqb team.

Added a Knight Errant to my Alpha Legion. On the Emperor's secret service, mind out, no questions please...

Used the master of recruits figure, new helmet, and an eagle crammed onto his collar.

There's a teal shine to the armour I'm pleased with which blends him in with my legionaries, but didn't photograph well.

May redo the orange scope and vary somewhat of the purple tones more.

Always really useful to photograph a mini and get a fresh view on the colours.

Love to know what you think.

@IronDrake

Thank you. It's pretty much lifted from various Grey Knight tutorials. Not that the alpha legion or knights errant have any connection to grey knights... ;)

The armour is undercoated black, painted leadbelcher, then heavy drybrush of runefang silver.

Then blacklined with nuln oil, with watered down Abaddon black in the deep shade.

Then glazed with very watered down Sotek green a few times. Used water not medium so it sat on the flat parts not just crevices.

Finally line highlighted with runefang.

I have a lot to learn about working with metallics, which is why I wanted to try this. Seems to be all about use of washes and glazes, and knowing when to use water or medium.

Can anyone share any fluff on heresy or crusade era I Legion Ravenwing as hunters, assassins and infiltrators rather than bikers?

Feeling inspired by the 40k Fallen I've built a Ravenwing marine on foot to form part of my command squad. Haven't decided if he's an alpha in disguise, or a DA traitor, or a DA on secondment. Favouring him being a Ravenwing operative working with and turned to the Alphas.

What do we know about early Ravenwing pre-Angelus?

Another vets squad, weapon masters.

The sgt is nasty, with counter attack from mutable tactics and a power dagger that's 4 power fist attacks on the first round of combat. Add venom spheres and they all get hammer of wrath too.

Terminators probably better, but I wanted a few swordsmen. They'll probably run with the librarian I have coming up next, or the Knight Errant.

Comments welcomed.

Contemptor joins the unit, my first non-infantry model since I painted a metal Eldar wraithlord gloss black in 96.

I re-posed the calth plastic dread a little, cut and turned at the waist, and the legs simply bent into a wider step. Added a searchlight and rather lame looking havoc launcher.

Had fun trying out chipped armour weathering. Black base shape, boltgun chip leaving black edge, agrax lower wash, then tiny silver bright highlight and bright armour colour highlight on lower edge of chip. First use of newish Stormhost Silver paint which is incredibly bright and useful in moderation.

Tried a lot of different washes on the metals to vary the tones for different parts; green on the fist, blue on the ammo drums, various sepia on moving parts, and purple to sepia fade on the gun barrels. Really interesting so looking for more metal stuff to paint...

All I can say is that in Wolf King novel there was a DA Marine who infiltrated Wulfs so perfectly (until discovery lol) that I (everyone?)thought he was an Alpha Legion.

Er...spoilers

Wrapping up my XX for the time being with a parade of the force as it stands.

Aramis' Chosen:

Left to right, Cataphractii, Assault vets, Sniper vets, command elements, Contemptor, Seekers. Usually run as Chosen Duty rite under the Delagatus.

All picked by what I enjoy in terms of modelling and fluff. So no metal boxes.

Had a lot of fun kitbashing these all together. Everything is plastic, I think there is one resin pad in the whole force. Loved painting with Sotek Green, such a rich and easy to use colour, but time for some new techniques. Learned a lot about weathering and metallics with these.

The librarian here on the right is the last entry to the unit. I ended up with 5 HQs in all, but the consuls are so interesting to convert.

Next?

What's red and black, unaffiliated and under-resourced?

I've been working on adding some Blackshield allies for my XX strike force. Outlander marauders who'll teleport in close with rad grenades and xeno weapons. A disposable surprise assault. Some indications they're former Blood Angels who've made bargains with the Xenos for tech to take the fight to the traitors. My XX won't mind that.

They're all built from a wide mix of parts and armour, some shotguns, some gunslingers, and I really wanted a pariah flamer and Xenos deathlock in there.

So here are the first two. Shotgun from Deathwatch, and the chainblade is a mk4 combat blade handle attached to a chainfist. The flamer is from scions with a heavy flamer backpack. That's a mk8 chest and sigmarine pad as I thought the protection looked sensible for an overpressured flamer.

Still not fully worked out a scheme, I like the red but still trying to find the right secondary colours and colour for pads. Advice welcome. Whatever I do I want to vary it a fair bit within the unit and add individual markings and heraldry.

Learning to shade red with a blue wash was a revelation, really like the depth that adds.

Knowing 8th Ed will change a lot of rules helped me really focus on what's cool, otherwise they'd all be shotguns and chainaxes.

Finally, here's my Marauder Chief in progress. Wide mix of parts. Grafting claw fingers into a powerfist turned out to be really easy.

A few more of my Blackshield marauders. Mix of armour and kit in the unit. Decided to keep mixing up the shoulder pad colours as well.

Lots of blood angels parts in here with icons shaved off.

On the right here is my Xenos Deathlocks. To cool an option to ignore. The barrel is off an ancient Eldar flamer.

Marauder Chief. One of my fave builds. Really happy with how the Tartaros helmet looks.

I've got a few more of this unit to finish, but then that may be it for my time on the HH. Now we know it's not moving to 8th (for now) I'm less inclined to continue.

I also think the new Primaris marines will edge out the current mini-marines in time.

I'm not cross about either development, 8th looks good, but it shifts my enthusiasm away from HH marines.

@Charlo I do like the stormcast pad but it's such a recognisable part I think it had to be used very sparingly.

@Kordhal I just didn't want to paint black, hard to get the depth of colour I enjoy working with.
