Brother Androcles
Holy hell, the Emperor truly helps those faithful to himI'll do a proper post tomorrow, but for now, consider my vow for October, to paint a tactical squad and captain, Complete And with very little time to spare! http://i.imgur.com/ev5mCGQ.jpg Edit:... Well then, I hope that all of you might be lenient enough with the rules to accept my submission for October, even though it's 13 minutes late? Soldier of Dorn
Edit:... Well then, I hope that all of you might be lenient enough with the rules to accept my submission for October, even though it's 13 minutes late? Doing it off my time zone (PST,) so you've about 2 hours to spare. Nice work on those guys, by the way: they look excellent, not at all like you painted them in a hurry. I've updated everything to this point (except main point totals in the first post. I'll get on that tomorrow.) As it appears that most everyone has posted for this month, and I should really start heading to bed, I'm going to post this now. If you haven't posted for this month yet, post within the next hour of this post (before midnight following this post) and things will be edited to suit. The Tale of 20 Hobbyists Month II: November Rules of the Tale: For the second month of the Tale, as with every subsequent month, participants will make a vow to what they paint within the course of that month, consisting of a number of whole units for their selected army (one exception will be made for the participant Rangaman, as he is doing a Knight army consisting of only 4 models.) The formats may vary, but they must convey three essential pieces of information: firstly, what unit(s) the participant in question are vowing, the points cost of these units, and the total points cost of all completed painted units in the army once these units are painted. Vowed models must be unpainted or in an early stage of painting (if you've painted test models already for your army, PM me and we can discuss it) and shown in a picture. For a vow to be considered complete, photographic evidence of finished painted models must be provided before the beginning of the next month at midnight, Thursday 1 December 2016 PST (UTC-7:00). If you finish your vow before the end of the month, you may choose to make additional vow(s). This may be repeated ad infinitum. Vows must be made every month by every participant, and participants will be expected (though not required) to provide regular updates on their progress throughout the month. Each participant has been allowed one bye for the course of the challenge, and if you have not made a vow for the month it will be considered that you have taken your bye. If you have already made a decision to make this your bye month, however, please let me know, either here or through a PM. A note on incomplete vows: if you fail to complete a vow during the course of a month, you will have subsequent months to complete it and add it to your army total. However, it will not count as your vow for the month and you will be required to vow additional units to the challenge to make up for it. Don't let things stack up like this. It's not advisable. The following participants are required to complete these vows from October in addition to whatever vows they make in November: - 3 Inquistors and retinue (? points?) @codyrstuart - Bran Redmaw, Deathwind Drop Pod, and 6 Wolf Guard (443 points) @Dosjetka - Fulmentarus Terminators and Apothecary (435 points) - Deathwatch Captain, Librarian, and Venerable Dreadnought (355 points) @Lord Commander Eidolon - Legion Praetor, Apothecary, and Land Speeder (320 points) @Pyroclast91 - 5 Seekers, Leviathan Dreadnought (570 points) - Legion Seeker Squad (375 points) If you edit your list for the challenge, I would request that you notify me through PM and edit the army list posted with your vow from last month. If you did not make a vow last month: and @Player 404, please include your army list in the same post as your first vow this month. I would very much appreciate it. With that, I officially declare the first month to be OPEN (45~ minutes early, and vows from last month will still be accepted in that time...) Rangaman
Nice Augustus, the Comms Specialist is super cool...I am surprised to see anything good come from that Limited edition abomination. Here be my October vow completed, one Cerastus Knight-Lancer chassis and base... And here be my November vow, one set of Cerastus Knight armour...and the start of the next Cerastus. These are prepped and just need painting. Augustus b'Raass
@ Brother Androcles: Dude, congrats on your last minute completion! I gotta say, I was a bit sceptical about your participation last week, but you've more than restored my faith in you. I love the halved colour scheme. Still on of the coolest chapters out there. I'm looking forward to your November stuff!@ Rangaman: Nice Augustus, the Comms Specialist is super cool...I am surprised to see anything good come from that Limited edition abomination. I know right? It's such a horrible pose - it looks like they cut him straight in half straight above his pelvis and shifted his entire upper body back a couple millimeters. Glad you like what I've done with him though. His standard will probably be used by the Vexillarius on the biker command squad (I'm debating whether or not to use the awesome, awesome Custodes standard on that squad though, thoughts?) @ Kurama: Glad you're back, buddy. And good to hear of your impending reunion. Or were you talking about the canine bitch? @ Aternas: YAY! Typhons.... such awesome tanks. @ Uveron: Looking forward to those BA dudes. I love the bits, just wish I could use them in some way without the obvious BA references. @ Uveron: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325762-a-tale-of-20-hobbyists-2016/page/19/#findComment-4550379 Share on other sites

I love the bits, just wish I could use them in some way without the obvious BA references. Thanks, these guys will be a bit of an experiment, going to try and develop a painting scheme for them. I know what I am trying todo. But getting it looking right with all the BA parfanaliar is going to be a challenge. Augustus b'Raass
Looks great - I've always loved the cream and purple colour scheme (I had an eldar force in the late '90s with that scheme). With the Emperor's Children, they've hit it quite lovely, but the inverted scheme you concocted also hits home! :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325762-a-tale-of-20-hobbyists-2016/page/19/#findComment-4550427 Share on other sites
Kobrakei
Well done everyone who completed their first month's challenge! And to those that didn't, don't get disheartened. All of us in the thread are behind you I suppose I better pick my next unit to paint. This month I'm going for an iconic and fun choice to paint, my unit of Deathwing Knights (235pts). I would also like to be cheeky and throw in on top of that a Perfidious Relic of the Unforgiven (15pts). It's not in my original army list, but I'm sure you'll agree that everyone loves a Watcher in the Dark. I don't have a pic of the Watcher yet, but I do of the Knights... Five Terminators and a Watcher in a month. That's doable right? SW1
I think for this month I'll aim to do a few smaller vows rather than a big one. To start off with I'll vow: Watch Master 190 points - The Osseus Key Fancy spending a bit of time on him, though knowing me he'll be done in a day or so. ;) Big scramble now is to get enough bodies sorted for all those pads I've painted up. :d Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/325762-a-tale-of-20-hobbyists-2016/page/19/#findComment-4550658 Share on other sites
Pyroclast91
Let us all hope and pray to whatever gods you choose that maybe November will be a little less hectic for all of us I know I can't be the only one glad too put October in the rear view. RL once again like she does thought I was getting uppity again and decided it was time to pimp slap me back into my place so unfortunately my vow for last month is only half finished well a little less 260/570 but I fully intend to make that up this month. I already planned on having a Dreadnought month and now it only seems fitting penance for failing to complete ancient Iram. So the month of November shall be spent toiling on the 4 ancients on my desk atm. Contemptor Dreadnought [Heavy Conversion Beamer, Plasma Cannon](220pts) -------------------------------------------------- Legion Dreadnought (Ancient T'Kyllok)[Armoured Ceramite, Extra Armour, Siege Wrecker with inbuilt twin-linked Bolter, Volkite Culverin] Legion Dreadnought (Ancient Prometheus) [Armoured Ceramite, Extra Armour, Flamestorm Cannon, Graviton Gun, Siege Wrecker with inbuilt twin-linked Bolter. (360pts) --------------------------------------------------- Leviathan Siege Dreadnought (Ancient Iram) [Armoured Ceramite, Leviathan Storm Cannon, 2x Twin-linked Volkite Caliver. (310pts) Coming out to a total of 890 pts for the month should be attainable especially since Iram is almost complete. That does bring me to my next point. I have one as of yet Un Named Dreadnought Lord Commander Eidolon was kind enough to name my shield dreads but my contemptor remains without title or fluff but he does have plasma and a beamer and loves using both to blast apart traitors which is what I intend to model him doing, so if any of you are struck with inspiration I'm really digging the trend we've got going of helping each other with names and fluff so I'd love to hear any thoughts. Brother Argent
Well I had so many plans for this month but being put on meds by the doc has somewhat messed me around a bit. Between that and work its been... interesting. Excuses aside, here I go: I, Brother SP, vow for the month of November October to paint: - Assault Squad Commodus (Assault Marine Squad x5 with Eviscerator, Lightning Claw, Combat Shield, Jump Packs, Plasma Pistol) at 155 pts - Epistolary Ithicus (Librarian, Force Axe, Jump Pack) at 80 pts - Reclusiarch Taron (Chaplain, Jump Pack, Melta Bombs) at 110 Pts This totals 345 pts for the Month This will bring me to a total of 675 Points completed. Warsmith Uveron
None Weekly Update / Maybe a Cry for Help! So Last night I started work on my first unit of power armored marines, spent 4 hours working and got quite a bit done. I took some photos at different stages so I could A ) Record how I painted them and B ) get some advice from fellow painters to make a better model. So please I am looking for feedback, please leave comments and PM and such. So I started with my 5 marines that I primed with Army Painter – Skeleton Bone (which is an exact match for GW Bleached Bone). I then hit the recesses of the model with a Nuul Oil wash- This left them looking a little grey so I retouched the armor with some more Skeleton Bone, and then some edge detailing with Pallid Wych Flesh. I then started adding some base metallic and purples. I used Naggaroth Night to cover the purple areas, and then Sycorax Bronze on the areas that will become gold soon. I then added Iron Breaker as a base for the silver/Steel areas, and started a second coat of the purple using Genestealer Purple, and then the a Mephiston Red base for the areas that will be red/blood, which is how I get to where I am now. Hidden Content Now I do have a lot of more work needed to be done, including re-touching the armor in spots that I have painted in the wrong spots, but yep. Let me know what you guys think, comments and suggestions at this point will be great. This is very different from my Iron Warriors, so may be ignorant of some methods to make my models even better! Augustus b'Raass
@ Uveron: I think they look pretty darn good. It also looks like a fairly efficient recipe, in that it won't take too much time - perfect for painting armies! You asked for feedback, so I have two points: The first is the eye lenses. You made them red, but as red is very close to purple on the colour wheel, the contrast could be better. I'd suggest doing the eyes in green. The second point is the gold. You now do it with bronze and then a metal highlight. It might be the low contrast setting on your camera, but I'd thinnk of a way to make the contrast between the bone armour and the gold details pop a little more. I'm not sure how, though, as I understand your reasoning behind the bronze colour over gold. I had thought about Green with the eyes, but I use Green on the bases and Iam trying with my power armored units to have no color repeat from the base and the model. To give the feel of a Alien/Angelic beeing. So that's why I made the choice to go with the Red, but I plan on walking to towards the Orange more than Dark Red, I am just using it as a base. As for the Bronze, I havent painted the Gold yet, and I think the plan will be to hit it up with shining gold, and then put a very carfuel wash around the edge of the gold and the bone to create a bit of a outline between the two. But Yes it's a bit of worry about how I am going to pull it off.
