Hi all, after finishing my 2000pts admech force, I've deciding to start a new project consisting of a 1700pts deathwatch force allied with a 300pts ordo xenos inquisitorial detachment

This project was initially started months before the release of the deathwatch codex. At that time, I've started mouting marines in order to play them as a count as 1st company task Force formation. I used the SM captain ][ shoulderbpads to represent the deathwatch pads.

Since then, the codex has been released and options looks better or worse, so I've rebuild some models.

Here's the Result :

As you see on the last pic, some bolters will be converted as Stalkers since my list includes 2x5 of those.

The blood angels was totally redone : I've given him a jp and an axe instead of the original bolter...

I've swapped the original head and SP to make a black shield watch master... Surely the DA are curious to know where this stange hooded marine comes from

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/Masteravoghai/Deathwatch/63B82845-B2BC-4266-A4E0-BC2335F14881.jpgMthanks to ebay I managed to find alternative shoulder pads.

It was also the perfect occasion to use the new Gw bases

A global view : (since then I've mounted 2x3bikes and a pod)

My first 2 painted minis : I didn't want to make a standard black armour as I already paint Rw and black deathwing. I've first tried the PA metal black but it didn't give the expected result then I tried the green GW used to make the DE cabalites warriors and actually found it matches perfectly.

Now the painting scheme is valid, I've started painting my killteam's.... Kill team!

And since I missed a shotgun+bolter, I've converted one :

Hopefully I'll finished the first kill team this week and I think I'll start my 4xinferno Hb poded squad soon ;)

(Il'll update this post with my 1850pts list soon too)

Thanks for the info(now to chase up my mates that have the dev boxes :biggrin.: , oh and nice painted stuff too

cheers, Mithril

Wow, brilliant work!  I love your use of bright highlight/contrast to produce individual character and make each model pop out more.  My stuff always seems sort of muddy and dark by comparison; maybe I can experiment with this technique!  :happy.:

Thanks ^_^

Actually, I used to have black models looking muddy/dusty all the time, then I changed my technique : I always paint the whole model's details and I finish with the treatment of the black. This way, lots of contrast is already done by the othe colours and I'm not tempted to put lots of grey/blue/green on the black to make it shine => limit the dusty aspect

I've really found that I tend to fail when painting dark colours, especially over a black undercoat.  I've recently been coming into my own with brighter primer and bolder tones, though I've taken a step back with my recent DW unit and I'm not satisfied with the results because of it.  I'm definitely going to try some of the techniques you used on yours, because I just can't stand any more muddy results on my models!  :dry.:

Well do you mean your black has a muddy aspect or the other colours?

Would you mind PM me pics so that I can see where the problem lies?

Just to say : the yellow trim on the red scorpions shoulder pad is not a direct applying of yellow. On the black undercoat, I've started with a ceramite white layer. Then I made a 50/50 mix of yellow + orange. Finally I've finished with pure yellow. Same thing on the DA robe : I've started with a layer of Steel Legion skaab. This is the base, you don't see this layer once the work is done but it allows the colour to be brighter. Then I made a 50/50 mix of steel legion + bone in the recesses. And then I've applied the basic bone colour. Finally I've finished with 2 levels of enlightments.

As for coulours like Dark green or Dark red, the key is to keep the base colour very pure and without any brush traces, then to enlight them with a few very thin lines on the edges with particular attention on the corners. Sometimes when I find the line too large I pass the base colour over it to make it thiner.

Take a look in my gallery, I'm sure you'll see what I mean.  Compare the GSC stuff (I know, heresy) to my DW.  I primed the GSC with grey and I use lighter tones in general, and the DW were primed black and just ended up looking so much duller in comparison.  I love DW and I want to do them justice, but there's just something about the paint scheme that doesn't work with my admittedly amateur painting style.  :dry.:

That being said, the lighting at the place I'm staying is pretty awful so maybe it's a lot of that, too.  :huh.:

I don't have much to reproach to you Deathwatch. Maybe you could go a little further on the enlightments by puttin a light grey/white point on the corner... Like on my deathwing :

But I think that black model, generally, miss depth and I prefer the way I've treated my RW :

That's why I wanted to treat the black of my deathwatch a special way...

And to put a pic on what I've said here's the corvus. Like you can see, all the colours are mostly done, It only misses the green enlightments

Yup it's freehand... kinda easy to do it's just a direct lines included in a quarter.

It's finished btw

Yup but it's not its base. I've used my stom eagle's base as I still have to make a convenient one for the corvus.

As for the freen hand it's really easy : draw a quarter. Mark the center of each side. This will be your markpoints. just  paint a line until one center (half a side) then join the center point to the center point of the following side. Do the same thing simetrically on the other side. Then make a diagonale between the 2 corners. Drawn 2 triangles to make the arrows heads. Do the little bars on the diagonals : done.

GW even helps you by leaving points on the models :lol

That is beautiful man. I love that rune, and your unique take on the highlights is really nice.

It always surprises me how we can all have an artistic take on the models and even though they're all 'black', our respective Deathwatch armies all have this uniqueness about them. You've done a great job with these... looking forward to seeing more.

Have you got many games in with them?

He really does make it sound easy.  I'm struggling to paint straight "V" shapes on my current army's shoulderpads, so freehand is not something I take lightly.  It's almost like magic to me when people can make it look good!  :tongue.:

Have you got many games in with them?

Alas not, as I'm the kind of guy who hates playing with unpainted models... :dry.:

At least now, I can play kill team games

That remind me I haven't posted my list yet :

Deathwatch 1500

Black Spear Strike Force :

Watch Commander

    Watch master : 210 pts

        - Melta Bomb , Angelis Homer

 Aquila Kill Team

    Veterans (5) : 190 pts

        - 2 Deathwatch shotguns, 2 Frag Canon, 1 Heavy Thunder hammer

    Bikers : 35 pts

        - Power Weapon

    Vanguard Veterans : 30 pts

        - Power Weapon

Dropship

    Corvus Blackstar : 210 pts

        - Blackstar TL Rocket Launcher, Launcher Halo-Launcher,

Combined Armed Detachment :

HQ

    Librarian : 70 pts

TROOPS

    Veterans (6) : 257 pts

        - 2 Deathwatch shotguns, 4 Infernus HB

        - Drop pod : Teleport Homer

    Veterans (5) : 135 pts

        - 5 Bolters Stalker

    Veterans (5) : 135 pts

        - 5 Bolters Stalker

FAST ATTACK

    Bikers (3) : 115 pts

        - 3 power weapons, deathwatch homer

    Bikers (3) : 115 pts

        - 3 power weapons, deathwatch homer

This list will allow me to play a Black spear AND a standard CAD. I have 2 units to hold the ground (stalkers) + one alpha strike unit (poded squad). Depending of the opponent, I'll make the Aquila + Master start the game in the corvus (against tau with interception for ex) or in deep strike reserve. In the latter case, I'll make my bikes rush turn one and chose to use the most accurate homer to deepstrike.

The Angelis will allow me to move the stalkers squads in case of threat or if I need an objective secured squad to grab an objective. The librarian will probably get power in Divination to make the stalkers re roll their shots.

Very impressive. I like the blue hue you've gone with on the metallic arms as well.

I've been doing the same thing with my second Deathwatch army.... It just works to set off the blacks a bit. It gives it kind of a 'cold steel' look.

I've seen blue with white cross "Avenging Sons" : http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Avenging_Sons

White with Red cross: "Fire Angels" : http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Fire_Angels
