New year, new project.

I've got a 2k game coming up on wednesday and I want to use Veridyan, so I've finally worked up the courage to start working on her.

Here she is all snipped off the sprue, cleaned up and mounted ready for painting.

They're a mixed bag and either way they tend to explode… A LOT!

if you run 3 in a single unit they'll murder just about anything you point them at, the down side is it's a lot easier to lose the whole unit to some random happenstance. If you run them individually it's a lot more likely that you'll actually get at least one of them into combat, because MSU. The down side is it's a lot less effective to have a single penitent in combat than it is to have a full unit.

it largely comes down to personal preference. I've had a single penitent destroy a grounded FHT, a unit wreck thunder wolves, but i've also had an entire unit die to random fire from a FHT in a single shooting phase (because it had nothing else to shoot at) and single penitents die before they get to strike in combat.

How does the new Celestine and Seraphim fit in size with the old Celestine and Seraphim? I'm assuming the new ones are larger, but I'd be interested to see who they look next to each other.

I'm still in the process of painting up Big C and the little Gs, but I figured i'd post a small update.

I got Celestine done to a table top quality in time for a game last week. Well... kinda... I was having trouble with doing the wings. I kept messing them up trying to do them the same way as GW has done them. Eventually my I snapped and flipped out about them. So I just rebased them leadbelcher, washed with null oil and drybrushed with runefang steel. It looks alright but I really want to strip them and do them over. I do like the metallic wings though, i think it'd look better with a lighter shade of metal to further pick out the details and it'll look fantastic.

I've also come up with a travel/storage solution for the girls. Take One fairly large and sturdy tupperware box, fit with foam, check Big C for size, glue the foam into place. Hey presto a custom built carry case for Celestine and the Geminae. What's not in the picture bellow is the lid which has foam in place to fit into the big square gap models are sitting in, and another strip of foam that comes down between celestine's feet and the geminae's heads to help keep them in place and not move around inside the box.

yeah, people at the club were saying the same thing and i was like. "Dude! Do you not see X Y and Z wrong with them? They could look a lot better."

Well I think that's the way it is with most things people paint. I agree that the white "feathers" would add more contrast to the model, but what you have does look really good

Some work in progress shots for this week.

Finally got around to taking Greyfax off the sprue and putting her together. She may be a single small character model, but DAMN is she one good looking model!

Haven't moved forwards with Celestine this week. Still an unfinished work but i realised i hadn't really posted an up to date progress pic of her.

Started working on the the twins. Most of the golds and metals are blocked in and shaded and i've started the basing the inside of their habits.

Group shot of the girls, just because it's cool.

  • 1 month later...

It's been a while since I've posted anything due to being on holiday/visiting the inlaws for most of February. It's been a long break without a brush in my hand, but I'm back in the saddle now and make progress on big C and the twins again.

I needed a simulacrum for a game coming up so decided to cobble one together from a couple bits from the sisters vehicle sprue that I haven't used yet, while waiting for various layers and washes to dry on the twins. Then just glued it onto the base of a regular sister. My head cannon for the model is that she's just jabbed it into the ground, stepped past it and is raising her bolter to join her sisters in raining the Emperor's vengeance upon the unclean.

(Sorry for the potato quality. I couldn't be bothered pulling out the SLR for a quick snap.)

Red: based mephiston red, washed with agrax, highlighted with evil sunz scarlet. (heavy on the wash without letting it pool on the flat areas, pick out the high parts of the folds and the edges to draw the thinnest line you can for a layer.)

Metals: based lead belcher, washed with null oil, highlighted runefang.

Purity seals: based zandri, layered ushabti bone, washed seraphim sepia, highlighted ushabti.

Skulls: based zandri, layered ushabti bone, washed seraphim sepia, highlighted screaming skull.

black thingy: based abandon black, edged balthasar gold.

Almost done with them. I think i'm going to leave them like this for a while and work on something else for a bit. They're easily good enough for tabletop and I have a bit of a back catalog to work through at the moment, so my time is best spent on other things right now.

The eyes are deceptively difficult, but are actually pretty straight forward and I more or less followed the painting guide in WD.

1: Once you've finished the face, apply a layer of Temple Guard Blue to the area you want to give a 'warp glow'. you can either do a blotch or try something fancy like streaks coming away from the eyes (like how some women do that wing/flick with their eye liner).

2: Hit that area with a thin layer of Pallid Wych Flesh, the blue will show through and give it an 'eerie glow'. You want to cover all the blue paint from the previous layer, but it doesn't really matter to much if you go 'out side the lines'.

3: hit the eye with a tiny spot of either Pallid Wych Flesh or White Scar to bring out the eye it's self. That way it looks like the eyes are glowing and the area around it is catching the light.

Another angle for a slightly better look at the business end.

So.... Can you guess what it is yet?
