bloodhound23
Here's a relatively-thrown-together test model for what will be a renegade chapter, backstory still being in the works. I have a 3e tactical box and some more random 5e/6e bits, along with some Vanguard box and CSM bits. There are a few places where some mold lines didn't get totally finished off, but I just wanted something to have around to try basing and painting. That way, I can have some feedback on more general stuff before I move on. Sorry, of course, for the pictures. In the future I'll rig up a lightbox, but I hope these are good enough to see the bits and what's going on. I did B&W, inspired by some of the Heresy logs. Forgive the 28mm base and the repurposed painted right arm, which looks totally bizarre in monochrome. Thanks in advance for comments! Hope you like the posing and the kitbash. bloodhound23
Thanks for looking and for comments. As promised, I have painted up a test model. These are definitely still WIP. The eyelenses are painted Runefang Steel but will get a go-over with Spiritstone Red and then a Bloodletter Glaze. I'm worried the metals don't differentiate themselves enough. The photo doesn't do a great job, as you can tell that the light source (about 2 o'clock, right to the front right of the photographer's pespective) reflects pretty brightly. You'll see that I attempt a few things that come across so-so, like the battle damage over his right (our left) eye. The Skrag Brown highlight on the ammo pouch is a bit thick too, and didn't end up being as watered down as I had thought (whoops). Oh well, it is a test model, after all. Keep in mind that the face of the helmet needs to be washed back down again from where I've fixed mistakes with the blacklining of the eyes with broad edge highlights of Runefang Steel. They can work, but these ended up being a a bit too broad and too bright. Enough chatter, here are the pics: IMG_0658 IMG_0655 IMG_0656 IMG_0657 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329385-returning-to-the-hobby-renegade-sm-kitbash/#findComment-4631701 Share on other sites
Marqol
Be interesting to see the eyes painted with the gem paints, must admit not thought of using them for that. It's a bit hard to get a proper look at the battle damaged eye as its visible from an angle in the pictures, but from what I can see it looks good, nothing too over the top. The metal is a nice beaten up look too, seems a very nice effect. bloodhound23
Marqol- I will be, too. The guy at my local shop suggested it and his example looked pretty good. I'll post one once I finish it up. Glad you like the armor, I do want it to be pretty trashed. The recipe was pretty extensive, and I'm worried about having to do it on every single model, particularly vehicles. Thanks for the comment. bloodhound23
Tried doing just an old pair of legs in a slightly darker scheme. I think I like the darker version better, but let me know what you guys think. IMG_0686 IMG_0687 I also finished the eyes for the test model, even though I will likely be using the darker scheme as I press on with the Violent Gods. Marqol
Oo that is quite a nice effect, might have to use that for one of my marine forces. I do like the darker metal but only thing you need to watch out for is on the tabletop will the models fade into the background. The lighter metal I feel pops more and is a bit more eye catching. In the end though if you like it you should go for it! bloodhound23
Hey guys- Slowly but surely the Violent Gods are coming along. You can see in my signature their Index Traitoris, the ongoing fruits of my involvment of the first challenge of the Iron Gauntlet challenge. Now that that is over, though I didn't get to vow for the second challenge, I nonetheless have gotten some modeling work done. I've got 5 (what will be) counts-as Grey Hunters built. Here's a teaser: Comments on the builds, please! More to come. bloodhound23
That torso looks great on MkIII legs! Thanks! bloodhound23
UPDATE: I have paint. He still needs work. A few touch-ups here and there, and I still need to do the entirety of the eyes. But I need everyone's C&C on a few points. 1. The black isn't nearly highlighted enough, is it? Right now it's just Eshin Grey over Abaddon Black, but it doesn't appear to be nearly enough contrast. I was worried it would all bleed into a big, gray mess, but now I'm thinking they don't stand out as much as I want. 2. The base is a little flat isn't it? It's straight Martian Ironearth, but I know others (in particular, Kizzdoug) does significant drybrushing over texture paints. So maybe if anyone has some thoughts on colors or perhaps some ideas for more interesting bases for future models, or this one, provided I don't have to rebuild the guy from the base up. 3. Weathering: I need to weather the model, especially the legs, but with what? The same colors as the base? So then I'm back to question #2. Anyway, I'd love to hear your feedback, and enough's enough: and the back: Thanks for looking. Stercus
I quite like the matt black effect of the pads, but you’re probably right in that additional highlights will make it pop a little more. What effect are you after with the red base? Something I’ve tried with reds is to use a greenish tone either as a highlight or a wash which somehow makes the red seem “redder”. If you want to darken the base, then a wash with a dark green ink then highlighting with the initial red shade would work. If you’d like to lighten the red (which given the dark tone of the model as a whole would be my preference), I’d consider a light drybrush with whatever the new name for rotting flesh is.* It should give quite a stony effect while accentuating the red tones of the base. *rakarth flesh perhaps? Razblood
Nice! I'd recommend using blood for the blood god for the lenses as spiritstone red is a bit too bright and glazing it mattes out the shine. I generally use tamiya clears instead as they tend to be glossier and make the effect more pronounced. Brother Cambrius
Huzzah to renegade marines with a kitbash of loyal and chaos bitz! Great to see someone giving this a roll. The conversions are looking great thus far in the blend of Chaos and Imperial. If you have access to the Vehicle bitz for Chaos, adding the gargoyle mouths on the Rocket Launcher can really work wonders in adding a renegade silhouette to the model. Are you going to go with the theme of the higher in rank an Astartes is, the more Chaos bitz they have? Keep it up! Cambrius Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329385-returning-to-the-hobby-renegade-sm-kitbash/#findComment-5125900 Share on other sites
