The drought of many years of not being able to indulge in the hands-on aspect of the hobby has ended. I still have all the stuff I had when I stopped because I knew I'd come back to it eventually. The Horus Heresy has been fun to follow as well as the talk of detachments and allies. I've always loved the idea of a beleaguered group of Guardsmen reinforced with a squad or two of Astartes and I can now represent that without house rules.

31/5/17 EDIT: Eighth edition makes a mixed force even easier so the Astra Militarum are getting some reinforcements from the 31st millenium courtesy of warp space-time shenanigans. They'll be backed up with new Primaris Astartes (hopefully towering over them) from a DIY chapter of mine.

Progress is going to be slow burn because I'm doing this purely for relaxation and don't have any urge to get them on board (unlike in my impatient youth). I'm going to try new things compared to what I used to do so it'll be one or two minis at a time; only being able to prime that many at a time is also a factor.

Army Concept

Hidden Content
The idea I'm working from is building up the human forces first to get the rust off and then work on the marines. This also gives me more time for more Forge World books to get released. I'll be doing a minimal allied detachment at the art scale (Doghouse style as it were) so they really tower over the baseline humans. A larger force of true scale (spacer style) is also in the queue. EDIT 03/3/17: The space marine parts are going in a different thread.

Grenadier/Solar Auxilia Test Model

-Goal: it is feasible as a 4+ save unit.
-Initial idea: Skitarii torso because they have a 4+ save and I like the robes/trench coat look. Picked up a box of Skitarii and cracked open the Guard portion of the bitz collection.
-Difficulty: low, shouldn't involve any intensive GS work, applicable for human size forces.

I dry fit Guardsman legs with Skitarii torso. The Guardsman was then directed to the Medicae Cosmeticus to shave off some of that pork butt.

http://i.imgur.com/MhOZQHKm.jpg?1

Once sufficiently trim so the legs and torso fit together (with minimal bending of the lower robes and the robes covering the chop job) I moved onto considering the paint job. I wanted something with a bit more pop than the browns used for the Steel Legion and Death Korp, but not so red on the brown-scale that it came across as a color for the Mechanicus. I checked out a color wheel to check its complementary color and it was a dark green. I figured I'd try that for the pants. I don't like painting Guardsmen legs and, instead of my normal techniques, I figured camouflage would be something new.

Step 1: Base layer of Dark Angels Green on black primer.

Step 3: Smaller slashes/lines of Vermin Brown

I'm not sold on Vermin Brown and may try a lighter brown next time. The image above also has the first step of painting the boots.

If there's one thing I've learned from years of reading about people's Imperial Fists and Blood Angels it's how easy it is to slide into brown town. I needed to tread carefully because I wanted it read as a very red brown.

The seal parchment I just used an old recipe. I added a wash with Devlin Mud at the end, but I think a light wash with Badab Black might work better next time.

I left it there for the moment because I really liked how it looked, but later when I did more of distance view I realized it needed some work. The later images have the addition of a heavy drybrushing of Mithril Silver.

Step 3: Heavy dry brush with Mithril Silver.

I chose green for the seal wax because it contrasts with the red-brown.

Other than not wanting to use the armored Skitarii heads I am really unsure about the head. I'm going to try trimming down a Guard helmet and seeing that looks too. The camo needs some neatening up, but I think that's mostly getting the consistency of the brown layer correct.

C&C always welcome.

True Scale Size Test

I took an old marine from a batch a semi-painted batch I traded for but didn't fully strip and chopped it up to see if the styrene I had was a decent size. Others have already done really nice how-to write ups and I followed the gestalt version: slice at hip and shin, space out the torso a bit and raise it.

http://i.imgur.com/WTPx4i9m.jpg?1     http://i.imgur.com/KmAuw1bm.jpg?1

This let me do a line up and I discovered that the Skitarii Ranger heads are shorter, or at least seem shorter, than the Guardsmen heads.

http://i.imgur.com/EA0CHRkm.jpg?1

The funny thing is that the Marine on the left is in the same row as the rest, but looks like he's a bit behind them. The Marine of the right looks about a head taller than the test Grenadier who looks a bit shorter than a normal Guardsman (this may cause trouble down the line if/when I need to flesh out the humans with some normal infantry squads).

Grenadier Arms & Head Test

I tried Guardsman arms and they did not fit the Skitarii torso well. The Skitarii arms are fine, but I shortened the arc rifle to give a more las-like appearance.

http://i.imgur.com/fCFcuD3m.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/J2tJwklm.jpg

I took a look at the sprue and saw that a number of the Skitarii arms aren't robed (many are but not all) and instead are bionic. This got me worried about the profile becoming too much like the Skitarii if combined with their heads. I trimmed down the sides of Guardsman head to do another comparison.

http://i.imgur.com/SuKj9nWm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/KztcNS6m.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/f8epx8Em.jpg

The Guardman head had a very hunched look, so I put some spacer underneath (far right). It's still sufficiently shorter than the truescale and more proportioned. Anyone like one head more than the other?

Loyalty & Treachery, yes. I went conservative with 11 infantry and 1 tank as the core because, well, slow-burn.

Press molding? Yes-yes!

I've been experimenting with press molding and used it to modify the Skitarii torso to make it look a bit less "I love the Omnissiah," (though who doesn't?) and more like flak.

http://i.imgur.com/otgylnsm.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/gowHAeWl.jpg

With this change, I may stick with the robed heads. I do like the anonymous soldier look for the grunts and then used the helmets and faces for personality characters.

Finished Grenadiers

I've finished the test model and one more. I'm not happy with the guns, but that's more a logistics issue. I'm using the same paints from six years ago and redissolving them as needed. It's worked well with most of the paints, but the light browns were near invisible (and it only occurred to me as typing this that I should have tried putting down a layer of Skull White rather than Codex Grey after the first attempt with Vermin Brown did not work). I'll keep tinkering with the recipe as I go, but it's okay if the guns look a bit different because they're bespoke laslocks.

http://i.imgur.com/VpUB25Pm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/r5Jwgaum.jpg

I gave the flak armor a bronze look (easier to see below) rather than the previous steel because I thought it fit the overall palate better; it's monochrome at this point along the red-brown spectrum, but with the green pants and seals acting as contrast.

http://i.imgur.com/But2AVQm.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

Thank you, I always like the way the Steel Legion trench coat models looked and this is as close as I'm going to get now a days. I'm going to try my hand at sculpting a head similar to to theirs for the third grenadier squad I do; the second is going to be my test bed for Guardsmen torsos mixed with Genestealer Cultist legs.

Loyalty and Treachery Update

I've made four more torsos:

http://i.imgur.com/ppsR599m.jpg

The lines don't seem quite as crisp this time around, but we'll see how they look when painted.

I've also tried something new for the laslocks. I didn't like the "analog" look they had when I just shortened the rifle barrel; too much like autorifles. I shortened the barrel as before, but then attached the long ammunition thing from the Skitarii Vanguard rad-carbine.

http://i.imgur.com/hH2a3wnm.jpg

I'm much happier with how they look and will attempt to give what I'm calling the emitter a nice glow effect like on plasma coils.

Silhouette Test 1

The two finished models were imaged at a distance to get an idea of how they're presenting.

http://i.imgur.com/8u2cxqem.jpg

The picture lighting is awful so they seem super-dark at a distance, but either way I'm going to use a light base color for contrast (something in the white/beige family). I think the new emitter on the laslocks will give the weapons a bit more pop. I'd like to go for a copper/bronze steampunk look on the weapon bodies to break the darker silhouette in half and am going to try a brighter copper tone for that.

Laslock Body Mk II

This was the attempt at a copper steampunk style for the main laslock body.

Step 1: Lighten body with Adeptus Battlegrey followed by Fortress Grey

http://i.imgur.com/GkFxWpRm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/jd1nC8Zm.jpg

Step 2: 50/50 mix of Mech Red and Mithril Silver followed by a heavy wash of Baal Red

http://i.imgur.com/Wy6EuL9m.jpg

Step 3: Heavy Burnished Gold dry brush and a heavy wash of Devlan Mud

http://i.imgur.com/EAxuO7xm.jpg

I'm not very pleased with the results. I may try something similar but with a base of a brown ink and Mithril Silver.

Laslock Body Mk III

With a lighter body to work from I decided to try for a wooden look - hopefully with more success than last time.

Step 1: Same as the Mk II.

Step 2: Apply Chestnut Ink like paint.

http://i.imgur.com/B7F0Y7Jm.jpg

It's a little hard to see, but the result was a very rich chocolate brown though rather flat.

Step 3: Two thin coats of Vermin Brown.

[Forgot to take an image]

Step 4: Vertical stripes of 60/40 Dwarflesh and Flesh Ink.

http://i.imgur.com/o4w0XLym.jpg

Step 5: Thinner vertical stripes of Chaos Black along edges of previous stripes.

Step 6: Black line the middle line and upper grooves with a Faber Casteel black brush pen.

http://i.imgur.com/hk9BDbMm.jpg

Step 7: Boltgun Metal followed by Burnished Gold with a light Mithril Silver dry brushing to do the trim.

http://i.imgur.com/JIJ7V4Sm.jpg

I'm pretty pleased with the result and I think this is how I'll do the rest of the squad. It's hard to capture the effect without putting more time and effort in picture set up (I did try with the final product, see later in this post).

Laslock Emitter and Ammo Cylinder

This was based on the usual method for plasma coils on plasmaguns/cannons/pistols. The difference in the thinner grooves and more densely packed coils became obvious after the first few steps. Unless it turns out people really like the result I'm go I'm going to try just metal with emission burn (kind of like how people do flamers or meltas) for the next laslock I paint up.

Step 1: Necron Abyss

http://i.imgur.com/JFTJXchm.jpg

Step 2: Regal Blue leaving the grooves untouched.

http://i.imgur.com/oQo74fbm.jpg

Step 3: A line of 50/50 Regal Blue and Skull White going along each raised area.

http://i.imgur.com/AXDWdULm.jpg

Step 4: A thinner line of 30/70 Regal Blue and Skull White going along each raised area.

http://i.imgur.com/ghUNjeOm.jpg

I also painted the ammo cylinders Skull White while I was mixing the paints.

Step 5: Very light dry brush of Skull White

http://i.imgur.com/3HuGupim.jpg

The ammo cylinder I did up as previously except a lot cleaner and with less dry brushing of Skull White. The white base gave a more noticeable purple from the Necron Abyss and the reduction in dry brushing left it looking less like the emitter.

http://i.imgur.com/GpCWrdwl.jpg

I don't really like the way the cylinder looks, but can't think of anything other than to paint it up like the trim. Any ideas, folks?

And for those of you patiently waiting (or that skipped ahead) here's the close up of the wood stock courtesy of a flashlight and a lot of small wrist adjustments.

Would any one mind posting or PMing me how to change or adjust the topic title? I'd like to keep it more up-to-date with what I'm specifically working on.

Another 1.8 Grenadiers Completed

Alternatively, always dry fit arm pairs even if you think you've deciphered the arcane numerism labeling sprues. It turns out one of the pairs was not a match :wallbash:. I'll report to Room 42 for penance after this post.

http://i.imgur.com/hGKZpKQm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/Ce9pPjym.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/U7EB2Sbm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/kqJf6gKm.jpg

You can see the other painted arm on the right in the bottom left image. I'll have to find its partner for one of the next Grenadiers. The bottom right image shows the 3.8 I've completed so far. The lighter rifle bodies is definitely an improvement.

Another 2.2 complete

http://i.imgur.com/s3QXilam.jpg

The completed Grenadier who was previously missing an arm (The shoulder is a bit brighter than the torso, but  I don't mind):

http://i.imgur.com/9BSiHyFm.jpg

I like the way the emitters look with the burn effect, but I need to use more blue and less purple.

http://i.imgur.com/S5TRsKzm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/gZPlpBem.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/5Zc4baCl.jpg

I need to keep the strokes broad for the Dwarflesh/Flesh Wash on the laslock bodies; these look a little too much like a camo scheme and not wood (at least to me). They look fine, just not exactly what I was aiming for.

Dreadnought

The inspiration bug bit so I took a brief aside from the L&T material to work on converting a B@C Contemptor arm to twin-linked heavy bolter.

I started with the meltagun arm because I wanted to preserve the assault cannon arm in case I wanted to ever use it (I really like assault cannons).

http://i.imgur.com/T3B5AWOm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/QPBKmz4m.jpg

My original thinking was to use the box-fed heavy bolter as the base, but the other part fit into the arm really well.

http://i.imgur.com/5ILKtkVm.jpg  http://i.imgur.com/TREeu4mm.jpg

I trimmed the protruding sections of the bottom edge of the top bolter, glued it, and filled the gap with GS. I used a press-molded purity seal to cover the gap in the ammo box.

http://i.imgur.com/rXd1ScLm.jpg

I trimmed the inner edge of the opposite ammo box and sealed the top half with styrene sheeting before fitting it to the opposite side of the top heavy bolter.

http://i.imgur.com/SP61Cdtm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/KRj9IfLm.jpg

I used a little GS work to fit the ammo belt to the feed.

http://i.imgur.com/RrRBUeXm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/T6AlYQAm.jpg

This is a big gun!  A bit more GS to finish, including an escutcheon for the gorget:

http://i.imgur.com/F44SYpJm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/HCoD8UPm.jpg

Grenadier Sergeant Leg Part 1

I want the Sergeant to be more augmented because he'd had more opportunities for bits to get shot off. I started with finding two similarly posed legs from the Skitarii and Guardsmen bits.

http://i.imgur.com/sbj10gPm.jpg

I performed an emergency leg removal-amy and marked where the new augment would go.

http://i.imgur.com/BaIkHjVm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/fiRsfk5m.jpg

I'll be completing it when I next work on getting more torsos ready for the last of the Grenadiers.

Tank Time

I've started working on a Leman Russ (not the person as you could probably tell from the title). The kit is from after the introduction of the Imperial Guard tank accessory sprue, but before they reworked it with all the variants. The instructions are terrible so I've been dry-fitting like a madman and taking my time. I found this variant of putting together the tracks on Warseer when I was looking for more detailed directions and used it.

http://i.imgur.com/Qfw9aJAm.jpg?1  http://i.imgur.com/Rld3Z8Im.jpg

There are a number of bits that I'm not sure exactly where they go: the back engine box and exhausts, various hooks, and grates. I've completed the turret and the tracks.

http://i.imgur.com/QcjgRTXm.jpg

I've got the sponsons semi-done, but I'm working for the next roughly 86 hours and didn't want to rush magnetizing them.

Grenadier Torsos and a Bionic Leg

I finished the remaining four torsos for the Grenadiers and the bionic leg for the Sergeant.

http://i.imgur.com/8KuzShom.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/dsT02DOm.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

Front Leman Russ Sponson

I have no idea if this was fixed in the new kit, but the old one only has a lascannon for the front sponson which is rather odd because the default option was a heavy bolter. Meh.

http://i.imgur.com/uHNX19Zm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/RrRWZ9Om.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/ODjDRCxm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/MaVLfI1m.jpg

The last image was a profile test and I didn't like the result so I trimmed down the heavy bolter.

http://i.imgur.com/5RGGCNnm.jpg

I was going to magnetize the side sponsons, but then I realized I'd basically always want them so glued them on instead.

http://i.imgur.com/EDdx2x0m.jpg

Grenadiers

I cleaned the flash off the last bits and converted a vexilla, but didn't take any pictures of it, because it's rather tame in terms of the plastic. I'm going to prime them tomorrow.

Commander

Keeping with the augmented look of the current batch of troops I had the idea that the commander should be a brain-in-a-jar. That would make for a boring model so I went with brain-in-a-metal skull.

http://i.imgur.com/wq1cTDSl.jpg

His basic gear is a laspistol and a powerfist. I'm waiting for inspiration regarding his cyber-familiar. Here's what I was originally thinking (minus GS):

http://i.imgur.com/M2G7N8Ol.jpg

It was... okay, but I wasn't sure if the fist was really powerfist material and the pistol was too snub-nosed compared to everyone else's weapons. After tinkering with a bunch of options I ended up here:

http://i.imgur.com/te31t74l.jpg

The fist comes from a combination of an old Empire Knight should and the powerfist from the IG Command Squad. I did the initial GS work of completing the arm and adding a rebreather tube from the backpack to the helm.

http://i.imgur.com/c7XTTbDm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/5LQaPP7m.jpg

Next will be GSing apparatus on the neck and then just finishing touches.

Painting a Tank

Oh boy. I do not remember tanks being this annoying to paint. Maybe its the age of the paints, but so much streaking (and not the fun kind).

http://i.imgur.com/yFlx6C3l.jpg

I added a second coat and once it's dry I'll add another. Perseverance, for the glory of The Great Crusade!

Tanks for the Tips

I finished the Leman Russ and relearned a lot about painting tanks. More foresight in what bits to leave unattached, what layering works on large areas, what brushes to use, etc.

http://i.imgur.com/loVGXsam.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/V7ZMA5Pm.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/brjbKH3m.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/iPY40zZm.jpg

I added some crew graffiti - the streaks are "because" the main chassis is literally painted with the blood of martyrs.

Commander Model Complete

Just needs painting along with the last four Grenadiers.

http://i.imgur.com/3FsKx4ym.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/bmkM9tJm.jpg

  • 5 weeks later...

So, I may have acquired Witcher 3 about two weeks ago....

I did remember to finish my pledge for L&T, but of course posted last minute

Grenadier Sergeant and Vexilla Bearer

http://i.imgur.com/NNI7QW3l.jpg

I like to think the squad has a small cult of personality going on around the otherwise completely interchangeable sergeant. I took the amputated leg and made it the vexilla. Shiny and morbid, very Imperial.

http://i.imgur.com/eC9UZoMm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/u5hI00om.jpg

Pretty basic pointing pose for the sergeant. The vexilla (in addition to the boot) is plasticard, a paperclip, and some plastic bits.

Force Commander Shinyhead Straken

That's his name until a better one floats into my not-shiny head.

http://i.imgur.com/0pLsrFrl.jpg

I'll take some better pictures sometime on Sunday because this doesn't really do justice to the contrast of the bronze armor and the golden head.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 4 weeks later...

Two thoughts. One, eighth edition makes it seem like it'll be easier than ever to have a combined arms force from different factions if they share at least one faction keyword. Two, Dark Angels Rites of War will probably all be of the no allied detachment variety. I'm thinking The  Great Rift is going to be spitting out some former Militia into the 41st millennium. Using some Primaris Astartes instead of true scaling gives me an excuse to pick them up.

Life Guard

http://i.imgur.com/m8wPb6Vm.jpg

I ordered some cultist legs from Ebay to use with the torsos left over from the legs I used for the Grenadiers. The plan is to GS sashes -like in Napoleonic era uniforms- around their waists to cover the gapping join. They're tall too:

http://i.imgur.com/tGdKCVUl.jpg

The Primaris Astartes better be as tall as they seem or these guys are going to be taking their lunch money.

  • 1 month later...

Colonel Morsaurum

Force Commander Shinyhead Straken gets a name and basing. I experimented with crackle paste for basing some low-tier paint level Guardsmen and like it a bunch. So that's going to be the choice moving forward. I'm going to be basing the rest of the Grenadiers the same way.

http://i.imgur.com/cZeJ2wnm.jpg?1

Rearm and Refit

I'm upgrading the Grenadiers as part of the Tale of Hobbyists. For HH they have to be a squad of ten before taking any special weapons, have a vexilla, and no vox. With the Grenadiers currently being Scions that needs to change. I'm adding a plasma gun, hotshot volley gun, and vox to the squad. Plasma is easy, just using the one from the Skitarii kit.

The vox is odd because the Scion is armed with a hs-laspistol rather than the hs-lasgun.

http://i.imgur.com/nQR3oZtm.jpg   http://i.imgur.com/Quv4fHbm.jpg

Simple enough fix and I can use the flechette barrel with the arc rifle to make the volleygun (l'm thinking a futuristic version of the old Empire multibarrel rifle).

The Sergeant (Tempestor) needs a chainsword for WYSIWYG so I put together on in a scabbard to put on his back.
