Well pushed and got them finished. It has been quite awhile since I actually got anything finished. I think they came out well enough especially since this is my first shot at really trying to weather a smaller model like this. Still gotta hit them with a matte varnish but waiting for the decals to dry. I really need to get back to getting my Word Bearers finished but it's really tempting to pledge my Imperial Space marine model that I haven't opened yet ;)

Vow 2.

I Brother Captain Firelupus,

Captain of the 6th company of the Dorn’s Wolves chapter. Loyal sons of Dorn and inheritors of the VII legion do hereby pledge 1 Battle brother newly inducted into the 6th company tactical squads to replace the losses of the Orge crusade.

(Picture is coming, once i have assembled him)

My WIP update.

I have a resin contemptor so I've added that into the airbrush stages, this is not part of my pledge. Just making better use of airbrush time! smile.png Although I didn't prepair the mount for it properly, I thought cheap-ass blue tack would hold the legs in place on a paint pot but they kept falling off sad.png I'll get them on the next basing run. I've had that contemptor for nearly 3 years so it's about time I get some paint on it.

I know the BaC dread pose is pretty boring but it's either this or an unpainted model.

Well, I'm going to call this done for the purposes of the vow - all squads are based, painted, and sealed.  However, the coating on my sheet of decal paper is taking forever to dry, and I want to get started on a dreadnought.  Here is the squad now, and I will update once all final markings are done:

Decals that I'm waiting on:

I already applied custom chapter badges, but I'm waiting on the rest of them to dry before applying.  I went ahead and made up (1) squad designations, (2) company shields, and (3) personal rank.

The smallest decals are roughly 2.4mm x 1.2mm, but with microsol it's so easy to do!  I looked through the B&C decal tutorials, and, honestly, they are more complicated than necessary.

Powerpoint and Decal Sheets are all you need for custom decals.

I bought the decal sheets from Hobby Lobby - the clear transparencies.  Then, you can make vector images in Powerpoint - just make the slide size 8.5" x 5.5", make the images, and then print them out on the decal sheets.  Then, use a decal sealer to spray on the sheet after printing, so that the microsol doesn't destroy the images.

It's as simple as that!  No need for extra software, etc.  Powerpoint shapes are all vectors.

This photo isn't great, but I am confined to the bed for now, so it'll have to do as proof that the figures are painted - I'll give better images once I have the final decals/coating on - I promise!

In the meantime, time for Vow #3:

I, coldfyre, solemly pledge to complete one Venerable Dreadnought, with twin-linked heavy flamer and underslung flamer by the end of this month.  If I fail, I will dunk my head in poop.

I am also working on some fluff - I've done a couple IAs in the past, but right now I'm doing some stupid thing where I track the Chapter's progress from 991.M41 to 999.M42 - I'll track who dies, who gets promoted, etc, within the Chapter, so once I get to the end of Medusa V (where my 5th Company was at the turn of the millenium), I can give all the names and short histories of each of these guys.  Then, they will be set to advance with the storyline through the Gathering Storm series.

As promised, the completed models for Vow 2:

Now onto vow 3, the dreadnought!

This is mixed members from squad 522.  The Tormentors have an echelon between squads and company - the "Section."  So, this squad is 5th Company, 2nd Section, 2nd Squad, or 522.  When split into combat squads, the designation goes to 522A and 522B.  This Combat squad is a mix of both (since the flamer guy usually rolls with the sergeant, but he's in a Castrol Super Clean bath right now).  The left three Brothers are from 522A, and the right two from 522B.

From left to right:

Brother 1 is the squad's designated "breach/demo man" - when they need to make a hole in something, he's your guy.  On his backpack, he carries the squad's meltabombs.  Beneath those are two breach tubes, similar to bangalore torpedoes.  Then some smaller tools beneath that (det wire, triggers, etc).

Brother 2 is the squad's first aid man - he carries first aid tools to help stabilize a wounded brother long enough for extraction, or for an Apothecary to get to him.

Brother 3 is the Sergeant.

Brother 4 is the heavy weapons man - he obviously carries a heavy bolter :)

Brother 5 is the ammo carrier - on his back he carries a spare heavy bolter barrel (the one that's wrapped up, underneath the bolter mags), and extra heavy bolter ammunitiion.  Where the HB guy goes, he goes as well.

This is squad 523A - 5th Company, 2nd Section, 3rd Squad, Combat Team A.

Brother 1 is the first aid guy

Brother 2 is the demo guy

Brother 3 is the sergeant

Brother 4 is the weapon specialist / comms guy.  He is responsible for setting up long range communications when the power armors' built in systems aren't enough.  He is always close to the sergeant, so that the sergeant can direct his special weapons' fire as needed, or to reach other units through long range comms.

Brother 4 is the battle-tracking/ prisoner guy (if they actually take prisoners) - he carries the unit's mission maps and plans, as wells as detaining tools when needed - he is also the designated recorder for the squad's reports and interrogations.

Chaplain Levatus is the 5th Company's Chaplain.  He carries relics and other cult nonsense.  He is responsible for the spiritual health, as well as the day-to-day training of the company.  He is not in the traditional chain of command (Brother > Sergeant > Champion > Captain), but can lead elements that require his zeal - such as leading assault elements, etc.

As promised here is a picture of my next vow.

Sorry for the blurry pictures, son has hidden my 'good' camera.

@ coldfyre: wub.gif I love those different roles you give to your different squad members - and I'm totally going to steal the ideas of your demo dude and the guy carrying the bolter barrel. :tu:

@ JontytheIrked: Nice yellow there, buddy! Almost ochre, no?

@ BCFirelupus: Great start, but why would you use base extenders on an unpainted model? Save those for your finished dudes, and get your unpainted miniatures some proper 32mm ones :)

@Augustus b'Raass: Thanks for the advice. I have a quantity of the 32mm ones, but saving them for my new figs. My old collection will get the extenders. I do admit the marines look nicer on the bigger bases.

@ Augustus b'Raass:  These poor marines have languished in Snow Cam (White undercoat) for over 20 years.

But now they stride forth as Battle Brothers of Dorn's Wolves.

Vow 2 complete.

No squad marking as yet, the white of Ultramarines will look out of place. I am thinking the red of Dark Angels will suit better.

Behold Brother Veteris of the 6th Company as depicted by the orange shoulder trim.

I don't base my models until the army is complete. In this case once ETL is finished. that is my next goal.

Lupus.

When you handle those old school marines, I bet you make 'pew pew' sounds like when you did when you first bought them, don't you, Lupus? ;)

Anyway, I finished the last five of the devastators in my vow. More pics, of all angles, here in my WiP log. Incidentally, except for the comms specialist, none of these guys are named! If anyone would want to give a name to the vexilla, the two weapon specialists, or to the battle brother, please let me know in a comment here or in my WiP log!

So with that, I declare my VOW COMPLETE!

@ Augustus b'Raass Wow, those are amazing! I really like your modelling and yellow - what's your recipe? Mine are a bit more on the ochre side, yeah. It's my first attempt at yellow since drowning some poor marines in bad moon yellow 18 years ago. I did yellow glazes over zandri dust for mine.

@ Lupus: pew pew pew ;)

@ JontytheIrked: Ha! That's a long time ago - around the same time as I started. My recipe is ubersimple: GW Averland sunset, Shaded with airbrush upward 45 zenithal shade of 1:1 mix of GW Averland Sunset and VMA Hull Red, and then a downward zenithal highlight of thinned GW Averland Sunset. Then a gloss varnish, and a recess shade of GW Agrax Earthshade Gloss.  Somtimes a edge highlight of GW Averland Sunset and GW Iyanden Yellow.

@ ronin_cse: IS your helmet crest purple? If so love it and if you do not mind I will try that on my guys.biggrin.png

@ Augustus b'Raass: have some more pew pewyes.gif

@ everyone else: I am blown away by the quality and diversity of peoples work.

So with that, I declare my VOW COMPLETE!

Spectacular models as usual and the presentation makes them stand out even more - it all looks very professional.  Have you shown us anywhere else what your photo setup / lightbox looks like?  If not, would you care to share?

Dreadnought Vow is complete!

http://i.imgur.com/nPSDK7k.jpg

I'm particularly happy with how the flamer heat shields came out - the tutorials I've seen recommend using four different shades (nuln, blue, purple, and agrax), but I only had nuln, drakenhof, and agrax.  I think it came out well regardless.  Overall the dreadnought was an absolute pleasure to paint - the Mk IV's have so much character in them.

Unfortunately, I forgot my own process and I put the decals on without the gloss varnish first, so the edges of the decals stand out in certain places.  I think I will need to go back and paint up to the edges on them to fix it, but that's a minor thing right now.

I need your help!

I have another full week before I'm off to work, so I think I have one final vow in me, but I'm not sure what I should tackle.  Please let me know what you think, and I'll hit that this week, and then save the rest for this year's ETL.

I can do one of the following:

  • Devastator squad (4x multi-meltas)
  • Mk IV Ironclad dreadnought
  • Mk V dreadnought w/ lascannons/missile launcher (it's the old metal Dark Angels one)

If there's any kind of consensus by tonight, I'll make my final vow and get to work on it.  Otherwise, I'd love any critiques!

It is indeed purple, it's the complementary color to yellow so it tends to work pretty well for stuff like that.
