Hi all, onto the next one!

Im going to keep doing Tyrannic War vets, ideally I want 10, plus Cassius and maybe a standard bearer. I haven't decided, and I dont like planning too far ahead because it always changes haha.

I intend to use the actual Tyrannic War vets from GW as well as the kit-bashed ones, and as the GW ones are very static poses I am going to make most of the kit-bashed ones running, and fighting. I loved these legs from the Vanguard box - but I had a huge issue with this:

I  did a little carving, and sanding. I intended to put some Vallejo plastic putty in the gap and sand it back down, so I wanted to take off a little more material than was necessary:

I used the opportunity to  blutac him together and get some pics:

I decided to pose him in such a way that would look cool on his own, or with him interacting with a gaunt if i decide to go the full diorama route.

All C&C welcome!! Thanks for looking!

Pose looks great! nice sense of dynamism, so look forward to seeing him finalised!

Thanks mate, should have some progress soon haha

really like the pose on this marine. The work on the legs has been done nicely, massive improvement on the previous. Look forward to seeing some paint on it :smile.:

Cheers mate, much appreciated! should have some updates very soon!

Wow, you've been busy....

I really like the snow on the first guy, particularly the small flakes on the marine's armour which looks very realistic.....You'll have to explain how you did that.

Cheers

That really is a bad casting on that leg... Nice job cleaning it up. All these models are fantastic and full of character.

Thanks mate! not sure if its just am isolated incident, or if they are all cast like this, but yeah, I was shocked!

Cheers! The snow is GW's valhallan blizzard texture paint. I'm not an expert on some of the other styles of snow, but this one is so easy to work with. It will stick to the models exactly was you see in the pics and once dry will stay in place. Cant recommend it enough!

Sorry for the double post - finished the blue and silver on the next guy!

I tried a slightly altered technique for the chips and scratches, and I think i like these ones the best so far.

Here;s the legs:

Sorry for the potato focusing on some of these, they were taken with some haste before heading off to work! I wanted to get an update done, as i had spent a long time re-uploading all my images from Photobucket to Imgur due to Photobucket deciding they hate money haha.

Tiny bit more progress, this time on the NMM gold on the backpack and weapons.

I'm happy enough with it at the moment, but in the future I will continue to try to get smoother blends, as i feel in the picture at least, the front of the iron halo almost looks dry-brushed.

All C&C Welcome!

That blue is quite something! Would you care to divulge the colours used?

It's not very often I see power armour painted with layered blends and not just edge highlighting - so great work! It's a lot of work but worth it!

Looking really good mate. looking forward to seeing it finished.

Thanks mate! couple more days on this guy, then on to the next one!

Cheers mate! Its time consuming, but its loads of fun when it works out!

The colours areall Vallejo -  model color Prussian blue, with magic blue and electric blue highlights, then an extreme highlight of sky blue and some reflections in pure white.

More gorgeous work, Replica. Always a pleasure to see an update from you.

What's the difference between your two methods of weathering?

Cheers mate! On the newest guy I did the scratches with a dark blue instead of black. I also chips along some of the edges, like on the feet which were just dots of dark blue that i brought the edge highlight under. I hope that made sense haha!

This dude is done!

I am by far my own worst critic and tend to focus on the imperfections and overlook the things that worked well. So I always try to find something i like for everything i dont like. For this one, I like the weathering and the NMM - but I think the white on the helmet, and the black on the bolt pistol are let downs.

I also took the opportunity to get a group shot to check the uniformity within the squad:

Sorry for the double post - time for number 4!

The 4 GW models all have bolters and close combat weapons, so I wanted the squad to have 4 bolters, 4 close combat marines, 1 special weapon and 1 heavy weapon as well as Cassius and possibly a standard bearer (but probably not?)

For the special weapon, I thought what I'd want if i was fighting nids-  flamer.

This one is from the Mk3 or Mk4 kits:

I also wanted this dude to have some close combat option, cause unlike the nids, flamer fuel runs out:

I used the legs from the Deathwatch kit, and the chest is a Mk5 with the UM icon from the upgrade kit slapped on the front. I wasnt sure if it was going to work but was pleased with the outcome.

All C&C Welcome!

Again, excellent work! Can't wait to see #4 done.

Thanks mate!

Legs are done - these legs were a real challenge for me, the shapes of the armour is quite different from the normal legs, so i tried to get the shading and highlights correct to really emphasise the shapes.

A little more progress on this chap - I tried doing the 'burnt steel' look on the tip of the flamer. I had done it before over metallics and found the metallic paint muted the colours, but when doing it over NMM they looked far too bright. I had to go back over them with a cold grey glaze to bring them back down so that they were noticeable, but more subtle.

I have also finished up the blue on the Mk3 backpack. I hadn't realised just how different this design was from the normal backpacks, until i started the shading and highlighting process.

I added some yellow lines on the flamer as they have appeared on the chainswords of the other members and i wanted to keep some uniformity. I also painted some red on the flamer, it was looking too flat and boring being all black.

All comments and criticism welcome!

It's looking really good on the paint, I literally can't find any criticisms in that, but I'm not so sure about the snow on the backpack vent. I imagine that thing puts out a lot of heat. Also, with all the sculpted iconography, I'm wondering if there's a tyrannic war vet icon somewhere you can make a press mold for. The freehand looks good, but stands out compared to all of the sculpted omegas and whatnot.

Thanks mate! I wasnt really thinking about the vent being a vent, more looking at is as a snow catching shelf, but i will have to be a bit more mindful.

You are 100% right about the shoulder pads! I've taken your advice and ordered some 3D printed pads from Shapeways!

looks great another amazingly painted figure finished :smile.:

Thanks mate, much appreciated!!

On  to the newt guy! This guy is gonna have a heavy flamer.

I wanted there to be a little movement in the pose, and found these legs in the assault squad kit and thought they looked like they were taking a slow step forward - more akin to re-positioning as opposed to rushing forward.

The torso and shoulder pads arent too interesting yet, haha. I will be changing the crux terminatus pad out with a Tyrannic War vets shoulder pad from Shapeways.

Really really impressed with those shapeway pads! Looking very nice!

Loving these vets, shall certainly steal a few poses and ideas from this thread! Such a lovely blue colour you've got going on, always happy to an update here!

Thanks mate! Yeah, definitely going to have to put in another Shapeways order! It does have a slight texture, as you can see in the image, so I think I'll experiment with coating it in thinned down vallejo plastic putty. I'll make a push mould of the logo too so i can try to put it on other Mk pads.

Heavy flamer guy is complete, and I'm pretty pleased with the results:

Next up I'll be doing a guy from the boxed set, I was saving them for "when I'm good enough" but, being my own worst critic, I figure I'd better take the plunge!

I'll be doing this guy, but with a power sword instead of the combat knife:
