Ladies and gentleman, brothers and sisters, comrades and friends,

I'd like to take this oppertunity to share some pictures of my Raven Guard successor chapter, the Night Claws.

Here's a little sneak peak:

This is around about my 1500 point towards the end of 7th; it includes the following:

HQ's: Shrike, 3 Librarians (inherited BA models)

Troops: 10 Scouts w/ Land Speeder Storms

Elites: 15 Vanguard Veterans, 5 Sternguard Veterans w/ Drop Pod

Fast Attack: 3 Land Speeders

With 8th edition around the corner, there's a lot of changes I'd like to make to this list. I plan on magnetizing all the arms for the Vanguard and potentially the Sternguard this time around to take advantage of the combi weapon changes. I'll post WIP's of the process and any other additions to the Night Claws that come along. I've got some more scouts coming in soon and some of the BA models need some touching up.

I know I owe you gentlemen some pictures but I got kind of distracted last night....

So needless to say, I got distracted and forgot the take some pictures. I'll try and set up a light box this weekend to take some better quality pictures.

Anyway, I gave the models a bath and started to clean up the excess plastic and mold lines.

More to come soon. I'll get these guys ready for the upcoming Hidden Hands painting challenge.

Game Log: Night Claws Vs. Alpha Legion 50 PL

Had a small 8th edition test game last night with a friend; we agreed on around 50 power level. Here's a breakdown of the lists:

Night Claws:

  • Kayvaan Shrike
  • Primaris Lieutenant
  • Scout Squad (Snipers, Cloaks, 5 man)
  • Scout Squad (Snipers, Cloaks, 5 man)
  • Vanguard Veterans (3 LC/LC, 2 CS/SS)
  • Vanguard Veterans (3 LC/LC, 2 CS/SS)
  • Sternguard Veterans (2 Grav-cannon, Power Sword)
  • Landspeeder (Heavy Bolter, Assault Cannon)

Alpha Legion:

  • Daemon Prince (Khorn)
  • Chaos Lord (Power Axe)
  • Chosen Squad (4 Combi Melta, Power Maul)
  • Chosen Squad (4 Combi Melta, Power Sword)
  • CSM Squad (5 man, Flamer)
  • CSM Squad (5 man, Flamer)
  • Cultists (10 man)
  • Cultists (10 man)
  • Cultists (10 man)

I'm sure I'm missing some of the details but this was the gist of it. We played the Annihilation game type from the book; we wanted to keep it simple. I had first turn.

I'll give you some of the highlights / takeaways:

Sniper Scouts:

I took 10 of these guys and camped them on some hills with the Primaris Lieutenant nearby for the reroll 1's to wound. All and all they we a mixed bag. The Good: They took 2 wounds off of the Daemon Prince and 3 wounds off of the Chaos Lord in about 2 turns. Being able to target these characters was pretty big, after the fist turn he really had to take care of his model positioning and worry about LOS. The Bad: Due to how cover works in this edition, it's going to be hard to take advantage of the cloaks. It just so happened that we only had 1 Ruins on the map and it was not in my deployment zone. Everything else was LOS hills. Also, and unsurprisingly, these guys fold very quickly with only a 4+. Terrain could be a huge factor in the effectiveness of this unit.

Kayvaan Shrike:

This guy. What a baller he will be in this edition. Just for the reroll all missed hits alone, my god. Anyway, I kept him in reserves with the two vanguard squads and brought them in on turn 3 to confront the tide of AL coming my way. Of course, I whiffed all 3 charges even with the re-roll (darn probabilities) I didn't roll higher than a 5, meh. I foresee this deep strike and charge temptation being my downfall in 8th edition. Needless to say I got counter charged by a bunch of Chosen and CSM after being shot at. Lost 3 guys on one squad but the others came out untouched. Sidenote: the CS/SS combo paid off a lot, being able to tank those combi-melta shots probably saved the last two VV's in that squad. This arrangement might be something worth looking into more. So, he activated the Daemon Prince first and took 3 wounds off of Shrike. I then used 2 command points to activate the larger VV squad and all but wiped the Chosen. To summarize a bit, Shrike took off 4 wounds but fell to the Daemon Prince the following turn. I rolled very poorly on the D3 damage rolls and AL player rolled his 6+ (warlord trait) save like a true daemon price.

Land Speeder:

This was an interesting one. So I took the Speeder with the Heavy Bolter / Assault Cannon loadout specifically to see how it would fare vs. hordes (his 30 cultists). Essentially 9 S5, -1 shots. Lets just say, every time they targeted a cultist squad, the cultist squad was off the board at the end of that turn. The moral system is just absolutely brutal to low moral, high casualty units. That being said, I am inclined to say that the Assault Cannon / Heavy Bolter might actually be more effective than a heavy flamer loadout for horde control. Anyone play tested flamers in this edition yet? I'd like to see what people think about this.

Sternguard Veterans:

Took these guys to feel out the Grav-cannon in 8th. Despite what people are saying, it's still a very strong weapon. It may not be good at immobilizing vehicles to death anymore (was so dumb) but it still eats through MEQ and TEQ models pretty well. Didn't have many good targets for them in this game so will have to keep trying these guys out.

Anyway, to summarize. The AL conceded on turn 5, he only had a few models on the board left. The Night Claws still had 5 scouts, the Lieutenant, the Speeder and some vanguard hanging around. The game ran very smoothly, and felt natural. It took about 2.5 hours but a lot of that time was us getting familiar with the rules, smoking cigars and drinking, you know, the way the game is supposed to be played!

Excellent work on the models. Did you build the terrain yourself? It's impressively detailed.

Thank you for the kind words, Bjorn!

I did put the terrain together myself, it was surprisingly easy actually. I followed the Winter SEO guide on his youtube channel - very good stuff.

There are still some small things I need to touch up but I'm fairly happy with the way they came out. I tried to not put too much effort into the cloaks because I want to revisit them when I actually base my entire RG force. I have some ideas.

This was the first bunch of FW models I've put together; I've used individual bits before but not the entire models. I found it surprisingly difficult to get rid of the oil on the models..I had to wash them twice before I felt like I got most of it off and even then some of the base coat still flaked off in spots.

They are the FW Legion Recon models from their 30k line.

I plan on running them as counts as scouts, yea. I think the models are so much nicer than the GW scout models haha. So now I have 10 GW guys and 10 FW guys. I eventually plan on getting 10 more to make it a clean 20 FW scouts.

They are the same size as regular tactical marines. I'll grab a picture tonight and post a side by side tomorrow.

They look good Poe.  Did you get the sheet of FW transfers?  I ordered mine but haven't gotten them yet.  Are there any raven decals that are small enough to fit on the normal scout shoudlerpads?  (not the FW scouts you did above)

I didn't get the transfer sheet, no. I over looked the fact that one of the pads was part of the arm when I ordered them. I was thinking that maybe the etched brass symbols would have something that fits. The regular transfer wont have the depth the other ones have. That or I can pop the arm of and chop the pad off; it wouldn't be too hard but I didn't feel like opening up a can of worms this weekend.

Does anyone know if one of those brass markings fits the shoulder pad? It looks like a few of them are about the right size?

What do you guys think. Can this guy pass as a count-as Eversor Assassin? He has the Power Sword and the Lightning Claw can counts-as the Neuro-gauntlet. I still need to find a way to add a pistol someplace to represent the Executioner Pistol. What do you guys think? I'm open to ideas! Also a melta bombs...
