Greetings Brothers!

Nine years ago, when I was on the Games Workshop Studio Web Team, I created the Land Raider Ares for an article on the Games Workshop website. It was an example of models that players could create for games of Warhammer 40K Apocalypse. People seemed to either love it or hate it, but it will always be dear to my heart as the one thing I created that left a mark on the 40k universe and people still talk about. Unfortunately GW never saw fit to make it "official" outside of the Apocalypse datasheet we put on the website (which is no longer there). It never received any updates for later editions of 40k either.

Well, if anyone has the right to update it, I figure I do, it was my baby to begin with. Since I originally designed it as a Dark Angels vehicle I thought I should share it here first. So here ya go, Land Raider Ares 8th Edition Datasheet. It's still not "official" and you will have to get your opponent's permission to use it, but at least in friendly games, most people won't mind.

Click on the image below to download the datasheets. (If the link doesn't work, such as on mobile, you can get it at Chamber 42 here.)

One of the things I couldn't do on the original was give it very many options. So I've added some weapons options. It was made before the Redeemer came out and I probably would have used flamestorm cannons had they been around then, but since it started with twin heavy flamer sponson, that is still the default. I also added twin heavy plasma cannons as an option to replace the twin assault cannons because I've always like the idea of it and a hurricane bolter option as a fun alternative for the side sponsons as well. Dozer blades no longer have rules in 8th, but if they reappear later on in the actual codexes or in Forge World's datasheets, I can add that in later. This has been updated with Dozer Ram rules as found in the Imperial Armour - Index - Forces of the Adeptus Astartes book on the Sororitas Repressor.

I'm not above making changes, so play with it and let me know how it goes. All of my stuff is currently in storage until my family and I can move to a bigger place so I won't get the opportunity for a little while. I will keep the PDF at the link above and update it if any changes are made and note it in this post.

Also feel free to point anyone you think may want the datasheet to my post on Chamber42 here.

Take care

- Bish

Thanks for the update - the original sheet certainly got my modelling juices flowing and now I may be able to dust it off for some games :)

So Im guessing these are fan made? How much trouble do you think is have to go through to have an opponent let me use one?

Awesome rules btw

You would have to ask the people you play with. I doubt a tournament would allow it but in friendly games I don't see why not. And yes this is fan made although as I said in my post, I did create the original Land Raider Ares, so take that as you will. There are no crazy made up rules either, just different weapon configurations, so its not like you are suddenly throwing down a Land Raider with 50 wounds. lol

Pretty sure you could get that into a WD or community article given its history?

They are welcome to it, although things changed quite a bit after we left. A lot less, if any, hobby/conversion articles on the website or in the magazine and I think that is probably still the policy.

Brother Bush, I have read all over about your creation over my 3 years of 30k. I've always thought it was awesome but was never to sure about my conversion skill.

I might just have yo give one of these a shot. Anyone have pics of how it's hooked up? Is there alot of chopping or is it a pretty straight forward bulld

Here is a pdf of the original article about how I made it. I do not have any in progress pictures because of time constraints at the time. You may be able to find better instructions by someone else online.

Here is how I did mine but it was a little more complicated as it is a magnetised Crusader/Redeemer/Ares

I wish I had the foresight to make the original that way. You can try out some of the different weapon sponsons a lot easier! :)

To be fair, a lot has changed in the past 2 years at GW, and they have published home-brew vehicle datasheets in that time. I think they'd be more than happy to take it. One less thing to do for them.

Edit: One typo in the swapping assault cannon line: Reads: "may swap assault cannon for...." when it should read "may swap twin assault cannon for....".

Currently you can swap each of the assault cannons for two other weapons :)

not

idk they allowed in the razorback ricarius

Thanks Elmo, I guess ill give it a shot at ruining a perfectly good land raider and vindicator with my sub par modelling skills haha. I might end up with a new price of terrain unexpectedly... :P

I hope I'll do it justice brother bish

Thanks for pointing that out I will fix it this evening. It's amazing how many times you can check something and still miss something so obvious!

I will have to send out feelers to anyone I know that might still be at GW and see if they want to use it. I know things have changed for the better which is one of the reason's I'm getting back into the hobby.

Nice brother Bish!

I've got some comments and possible improvements though.

First, this thing is probably violent enough to make it a Lord of War. The Terminus Ultra is one and this has enough weapons to IMO qualify.

For which army or armies is this? I'd guess for every Astartes army but it couldn't hurt to make it clear.

One part of the rules that is unclear is This model may take two twin heavy Flamers or two Flamestorm cannons or two hurricane bolters which ought to read This model may replace its two twin heavy Flamers with two Flamestorm cannons or two hurricane bolters.

It's a pity there isn't an option for quad heavy bolter sponsons but that's OK. Having two twin plasma cannon sponsons as an option might also improve the vehicle.

Were I you I would also add tracks as a Melee weapon. Sometimes you just want to run over something.

Good work and good luck!

Thanks, I will add that tonight as well, that's why I put it here first so you guys can catch my mistakes hehe.

As for Lord of War, I'm not sure it quite goes that far. The Terminus Ultra has five twin lascannons to take out titans which is far more firepower than the Ares. The Ares is really meant to bust through the enemy lines with it's Demolisher and then take out soldiers with its sponsons which is why I have kept them shorter range weapons. I also want to be careful about not making it too flexible either which is why I would probably keep the plasma sponsons off, as cool as that may be hehe. To be honest I'm not entirely convinced I should have put the twin Plasma option in their at all. Heavy bolter sounds are nice too but again, all the other Land Raiders are fixed in their loadouts, so even giving these options seems like more than is usually given to a Land Raider.

I will be interested to see how it does in people's games and if it really dominates than I'll reconsider the Lord of War idea.

I have updated the files above with the fixes you guys suggested. They are now version 1.1 you can find the version number on the bottom right of the pages in the pdf.

Thanks again for your help in catching mistakes!

Further suggestion for version 1.2:

Grammar nit (I think): in two places you use it's where its should be used.

Add Tracks as melee weapons. Sometimes you just want to run over something and as it is the vehicle has an Attacks value but no melee weapons.

Question:

With Heavy Plasma Cannon do you mean the plasma cannons carried by Devastators or the ones carried by the wierd DA speeder? If it's the former the name should be changed.

Thanks, I'll look for the "it's" changes.

Is there a vehicle that has Tracks as a weapon already? I don't remember seeing that.

And definitely Twin Heavy Plasma Cannon like on the Stormraven. And not the Plasma Storm Battery on the Land Speeder Vengeace.

I've looked into where I saw Tracks as weapons. Turns out it is in the IG superheavy entries :teehee: so I guess not then. Oh well.

The heavy plasma cannon off the Stormraven should fit fine. The only difference with the infantry plasma cannon is its 'roll 1' result.

I Like! I might even try contrapting one some day!

I did the same thing as you went looking and was like I thought they all had it. But don't listen to me I thought land raiders had 20 wounds.

So interestingly in the Imperial Armour Index Forces of Adeptus Astartes, there is a type of Dozer, but it's list as a Dozer Ram and it is only available on the Adeptus Sororitas Repressor. Its the same idea as the Tracks.

It's a melee with -1 AP and 1 D and says  Against INFANTRY units make three hit rolls for each attack rather than one if the Sororitas Repressor has successfully completed a charge this turn.

Since the Repressor is really a glorified Rhino, I don't see why we couldn't add the Dozer Ram rule to the Ares. I think the ability to melee like the Repressor fits the Ares well as it's meant to blow through fortifications and take out the guys behind them.

What do you guys think?
