So, I'm posting up a WIP thread in, god knows, years. The last one was when the Contemptor was first released. Well, this time around, it's something from the starter set for 8th edition.

It's one of the Death Guard, but I could only find the main body and the left arm for him. The rest of him was used to make his twin. So, in for a penny, in for a pound, I decided to make a new model out of whatever I could put my hands on. This is very much a WIP.

At this point I'm only about halfway done so far. I still need to sort out the right shoulder guard (it's an amalgamation of two different kits that don't quite sit right together) by covering it, probably, with a cloak or something. The head was an old Night Lord one, with the wings swapped out for DG spikes from other starter kit models that I've been modifying. The torso was a Tartaros one to begin with, though I've dinged it up a bit and removed the scroll-work on the front of it. Not sure if I've finished with that yet. The backpack is a Crimson Slaughter one, as is the bolter arm.

And, oh yeah, there's some epoxy intestines. A little weird to get it more or less right but I think it's just a matter of practice.

Anyway, about an hour later and I've continued work, mostly sorting out the right side. I began the cloak (note the epoxy scaffold for further sculpting later on) and I've added in a rat's tail. It's a bit on the bony side but I like it.

The only thing I'm concerned about atm is the additional censer on the shoulder pad. I think it's standing a little too proud. Maybe I should shave it down by another mil or two...

Ideas, comments and critique are welcome.

OMG, you're doing wip thread?! :ohmy.:

Looking good so far, but I have a suggestion for a better intestines technique, in case you plan on doing more. Roll out a sausage of GS the size you want and then use the flat side of a comb to very gently roll some impressions into it to give it that slightly lumpy look. Also, a comb can be a cheap stand-in for a tube making tool, especially if you can find one with a lot of really narrow teeth.

Shocking, I know! I figured I might as well share, seeing as I'm making the effort. :happy.:

Interesting advice, brother. I hadn't thought about using combs that way before - worth remembering!

Looking good so far, brother :tu: I do think you may be right about reducing the censer down a bit more (perhaps halve it completely and have it, then you can use the other half on his twin)

The extended part of the Cape might need cutting into a bit (not threadbare enough yet) and you'll want some bits in multiples of three (triple warts, triple holes in cloak, triple horns...)

That censer piece will be filed down, rather than cut down - it's filed down somewhat already.

I get what you're saying about the cloak - I'm intending to muck it up a little when it's cured and properly attached to the model. Also, funny you should mention triple-things...

:D

I might try my hand a boils at some point.

Something, something, volkite, something...

:whistling:

Looking good olis, love the putty work so far.

Warts are dead easy, 3 small balls of putty, smush the edges into the armour to create ragged edges bumps and the poke a small hole in the centre. Just don't go overboard!

Still needs more choom.....

Thanks, binary. Appreciate the advice. :tu:

And yes, everything needs more choom. :D

Not much of a Nurgle man myself, but that is a neat looking heretic you've got there.

Always nice to see The Great Enemy looking the part.

And I'm just gonna throw out Viktor VonChoom as a warband leader name while I'm here.

  • 2 weeks later...

Contrary to recent reports, I'm not dead! I have been quite busy doing other things, but it's mostly looking after an injured family member (broken ankle) and working. There was also the small matter of a gathering of Mods at Warhammer World over the weekend of the 23rd (a good time was had by all).

But, still, I had better show some progress, little as it may be. Yes, I am continuing to work on this. I've actually attached his other arm now, so the model looks far more complete. I'm also in the process of de-horning his foot, just to set him further apart from his original twin. Note the shoulder pad horn has also gone.

I've begun smoothing the join on the inside of the cloak - I think one application of Liquid Green Stuff might suffice after this.

And, finally, the outside cloak/right shoulder pad. The censer just wasn't working, so I've ditched that - though, I haven't decided yet what to put in it's place. And the cloak has been built up a little. It dawns on me that I'm not a particularly skilled sculptor, hence the lack of definition so far. Basically, it looks like a blob. Yeah. I'll keep working on that. :P

So, any ideas what to fill that gap in the middle of the shoulder pad with?

That looks like a great place to add some choom. :tongue.:

As a more serious answer, perhaps a spike or horn, surrounded by three greenstuff lumps/warts/other gross nurgley things?

I'm not exactly sure about that considering you did say you'd just got rid of a horn from a shoulder pad.

Maybe a skull surrounded by sundry greenstuffed gross bits, if you've got any skulls lying around?

Ah, yes. The choom. If and when I get more nurgle devotees, I'll see what I can do.

I'll have a look around for a skull. WF suggested the same thing in another thread. It's either that or maybe a nest of tentacles.

ADDENDUM: I'm an idiot. The spare bits that make up the base for this model? Yeah. They're the 'spare bits' that make up part of the plasma gunner. So now I have a head an arm and a front torso with nothing to attach them to...

Oops.

But to look on the bright side, you now have a spare arm, head and front-torso for future conversions! :teehee:

Small update, getting the liquid greenstuff (LGS) out for smoothing things over (after a little filing, of course):

As you can see, the feet horns have been reduced to all but one (should I get rid of that one too?), the cape filler, which can barely be seen here, has had a covering of LGS for now and, also barely visible, the flaps of skin over the intestines have been given better definition.

The other picture shows the cape - which is turning into a major part of the conversion, timewise - that has gone through the process of getting a coat of LGS and then filed back for a smoother finish.

I want to make that corner tatty, like the rest of the cape, but I'm not sure what exact shape it'll be yet. And, yes, that hole in the shoulder pad still needs work on it. I'm still leaning towards a nest of tentacles...
