Azekai
Howdy folks, getting back into the swing of things for 8th and the Legion War is the perfect motivation! I snagged a very nice Atropos knight that I am in the process of strapping dead bodies to and covering with rust, all in the name of Papa Nurgle. Will likely post other things here when I finish, hence the other tags.Any and all tips and critiques are welcome! If the photos are execrable, I apologize in advance. I am no photographer.http://i.imgur.com/Gok2ta4.jpgHere are all the bits, with just some of it primed. This is about a week old or so.http://i.imgur.com/YxLkByz.jpgSpiky Bits all over the carapace. Need to magnetize this so it can lift off without too much wear on the paint. I am not sure there are enough spikes. Is it clear this thing is a Chaos Knight? http://i.imgur.com/7Yr5bVH.jpgDisassembled body, shoulders and weapons. Weapons are magnetized, and when it all snaps together it looks something like this:http://i.imgur.com/jbRlzre.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/TC6ioRv.jpgArmor plating. This is just the first coat or two, still need lots of weathering and wear and tear.http://i.imgur.com/TC6ioRv.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/sOKpeIe.jpgClose up of the head. Added mandibles to make it look a bit more sinister and insectile.http://i.imgur.com/K5OKm6S.jpgControl panel, cracked and useless... which is fine because the pilot can't read. I am very not good at detail work, might be a symptom of my limited color palette.http://i.imgur.com/C92Kaoa.jpgMummified (mostly) dead fella at the controls. I used bits from the corpse cart and wedged 'em in there, and I am glad I am a traitor because a good chunk of the left armrest had snapped off in shipping.http://i.imgur.com/7udahEm.jpgLegs, with rust and an additional friend hanging around. I am pretty proud of the rust- made my own in an oiler bottle using bleach and white vinegar. The effect is authentic enough but it creates a bit of chlorine gas as a byproduct. That is ok though- you can't dedicate a project to Nurgle without a bit of poison fumes wafting about!Seriously though, good ventilation is key.http://i.imgur.com/zqEiM2h.jpgAnd bonus is a little kitbashed daemon prince. I need to clean up/disguise his GUO elbow as well as that vox sitting on his back, and probably mess with the DE masks to make them more 'Plague Garden' and less 'Commorragh' but you get the idea. Azekai
That rust looks ace. Thanks! I am quite happy with the recipe. I would encourage anyone with cleaning supplies and a love of entropy to try it out! Quick update- I have been working on this project slowly, trying out new techniques... I have been using crackle finish on the armor plates, and while the overall effect is fine, the inevitable glossy look is a turn off (all that shine also makes the effect nearly impossible to photograph!). Probably going to apply a light layer of matte to dim things down a bit, maybe use Dullcote, not sure. http://i.imgur.com/2gA1nxL.jpg This is just roughly held together with greenstuff. Not married to any one pose, yet. http://i.imgur.com/HYbuYkS.jpg I want to come up with some sort of nasty, twisted heart-like organ, with misshapen ventricles grasping and reaching out through the front armor. It is going to be hard to get right without being stupid and/or over the top. Fhanados
Looking really nice! I envy your Atropos, I've only got a pair of bog standard Renegades. May I ask the colour you used as the basecoat on the armour plates? I'm considering doing House Malinax and that's pretty much spot on what I'm after. Azekai
Thanks for the kind words- I am using Citadel paints, Rotting Flesh and Bleached Bone on a black undercoat. Both colors are discontinued, annoyingly, but I found this handy compatibility chart. I can't vouch for its accuracy personally, but it seems close at a glance and is well-sourced.I like applying a few watered down layers of each. If you want to do crackle afterward, it gives it those lovely varicose vein effects... I have been putting Army Painter's anti-shine varnish on it afterward and that seems to get the gloss to settle down a bit without obscuring much detail (IE, filling in the minute cracks). I was originally going to go with House Morbidia, as their colors are unstated, but now that you mention it, I think I subconsciously stole the scheme of House Malinax Edited July 3, 2017 by Azekai Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/335454-azekais-death-guard-and-friends/#findComment-4806365 Share on other sites

I have a very very old paint collection and still have Bleached Bone and Rotting Flesh somewhere. Fingers crossed they're still usable! I haven't had much luck with crackle medium but it seems to be working pretty well for you. Nothing wrong with stealing colours. We're all filthy backstabbing traitors after all! Azekai
Alright, done and done! Pax Iator is complete, praise the Lord of All. Hit on a better method of using that dang crackle stuff; the no-shine varnish was covering up too much detail, so I ended up applying a brown wash to get in the cracks and then drybrushing the hull very lightly with bleached bone before slathering it with rust.http://i.imgur.com/F798UjY.jpgI apologize once again for my poor photography apparatus and skills. The iphone camera is pretty great but I don't have a light box or anything. Gonna post picks of my chopped up sorcerer, Blightbringer and Lord of Contagion next. Sgt. Blank
Awesome knight - I'm not sure if I've ever seen one with crackle paint like that - it's a neat effect for all the flat surfaces, plus it conveys the decaying effect well!
