Settling on a paint Scheme

Nice! The jade ones looks really good!

Thanks. I think the jade, blue green, and purple ones came out best in the first few tests. I need to post pics of the ones that were done with an airbrush, they're generally a lot smoother and cleaner.

Alright everyone, I said I would post pictures of how they looked airbrushed and I have delivered - a couple weeks late, of course.  :teehee:

First up, glorious purple. I really like how this one came out, the purple is very clean and still has the metallic sheen to it. I didn't paint her all the way though, just a little bit. The purple was done by airbrushing the model in retributor armor before applying a few layers of druchii violet - again with an airbrush.

Second up is my attempt (?) at doing black metallic armor. I based in retributor armor, applied a thin layer of druchii violet, and then did a few layers of nuln oil, but not enough to totally dominate the purple tint. I did a previous model by basing in runefang steel and then applying layers of nuln oil, but it turned out more like a grey, and the metallic effect was totally killed. Anyways, this one turned out better than I thought it would, the shine is still there, even if it has been dulled down quite a bit. Although, like all blacks and dark greys, it usually needs to be highlighted for some depth, and I have yet to find an effective way to do that.

Lastly, we have what I consider the best of the bunch. Retributor armor layered with coelia greenshade, and possibly drakenhof - I can't remember what I did, that'll teach me to write down my color schemes! I got a really nice metallic green. And I thought it would go well with an earthy base. Weathering was also added to bring it out a little more. If I can just find out what I did to make this green, I will most likely, at last, accept a paint scheme for my army!

(I fully intend to make the faces all pasty white with black hair, brows, and lips)

If there is anything I can say I have learned with this new batch of figures, it's that:

1. I need to write down exactly what I'm doing, my memory, while I think it's powerful, is not infallible.

2. Basing in retributor Armor or balthazar gold can give more depth or warmth to a model done in this style, just as stormhost silver or runefang steel can give coldness, and leadbelcher sits somewhere in-between the two.

3: You REALLY need to thin metallic colors much more than other paints when you airbrush them. And you REALLY need to spend quite a bit of time cleaning the airbrush to get those sparkly flakes out!

4: Citadel shades should be used lightly here, a less is more approach is recommended, these paints can quickly make a paintjob look murky and dark.

I like the orange, works well. I've always thought as DE liking to stand out, so bright colours looks good on them

Yeah, that's a way to look at them, but there's still a part of me that thinks they need to be extremely contrasting or dark and brooding. Eh, whatever, I guess I just need to wrap my head around the fact that these guys in bright orange will not hesitate to have amazing times with you. And I suppose I could write up a short little backstory for them too.

Just discovered this topic and I actually wanted to suggest something similar. Why always dark and trist? We are the Primary predator! We don't need to hide!

I did something similar by using turquoise with red wash for the grunts and orange with red wash for the true born and Sybarite guys.

I got my own topic for that om in the true Eldar forum:

Have you decided on basing for your guys?

It's slow going it seems, but we'll get there ;) Your models are looking great, very nice colours working together and they're not even finished

Yeah I had a feeling that the black and orange would make for a really nice contrast, and that the white flesh would also work with the orange.

From my Xeno Files vow, with exclusive bonus pictures for this thread. Behold my Succuchon (Succubus + Archon), or would that make it an Archubus?

I know I have a pretty big vow to complete, but I've pretty much got everything set and ready to go. Once I start the painting it'll be done in no time.

I had the evening to airbrush, so I thought of taking pics of my collection thus far. I have a lack of transports and firepower but Ill get specialized stuff to gear this out later. Most of my Kabalite forces are going to be from the Poisoned Tongue, while the Wych and speedy forces will be my own orange scheme, as yet unnamed.

I'm going to challenge myself to plow through most of this during my Christmas break, prioritizing xeno files units. Honestly if I get half of this done by then I'll call it a success given my painting speed...

Looks great man. I have been planning for a long time to build a dark eldar army in a similar paint scheme. I have been waiting for the codex to come.  Unfortunately I am waiting for both them and Space Wolves to get a new codex. I get the feeling that they will be back to back haha.

For the airbrush are you using the GW airbrush paints? I am going to invest in an airbrush soon so I am trying to learn as much as I can about them.

Nah mate, I just use the standard GW paints because my local indie store doesn't stock airbrush paint and I can't be bothered to order it.   I usually fill my air brush cup 1/2 to 2/3s to the top with water and add a couple full brushloads of paint. The idea is to get a coffee creamer consistency - it should be very mobile but leave pigment behind. It's important to learn your mixture slowly, and to increase the pressure as you add more paint, or you risk clogging the brush.
