General Necromunda Inspiration Thread not just Films People!

All the Films mentioned are true to the vibe of necromunda, iv'e seen practically all of em,many years ago i helped run a Video shop(half the frater here may not have even seen a VHS tape probably :blush.: ) and boy did i watch a LOT of movies...

Although i'm getting some inspiration from the usual suspects i.e. mad max,Blade runner, all those 80's classics,

But i think for my first 2 gangs - Goliath and Escher (of course) i'm going to DC...comics that is :biggrin.:  ,

BANE is going to be my Goliath inspiration and a Little Classic Harley Quinn is so right for an Escher gang...

what theme are others doing?, or are you going stock standard?...

District 9, and Chappie spring to mind for that run down urban gang violence vibe at times.

The music and videos of Combichrist, Rotersand, Funker Vogt and the like.

At the risk of provoking people I like the aesthetics of the remake of Total Recall - dense urban environments.

Could try the Goblins from the Hobbit game, cover the faces so they are not obviously Gobbos. I can see people living in the wastes being a bit meffed up so the wonky legs and arms wont look outta place.

Now I wanna play Rage but I dont have a TV at the moment. Grrrrrr.

Maybe this Christmas. I've bought the main Necromunda box with a friend, it should arrive this week and if I'm happy with the scale compared to IG models, then I'll shoot. Otherwise I'd have to wait to see how Delaques and Ratskins are handled to see if they could match. So it's pretty much up in the air right now.

Not sure if computer games are valid comment in this thread, but Escher also make me think of the Chem Fiends in Fallout: New Vegas.

I'm looking at the new Orlock models and I'm seeing a Black Panther inspired gang called The Black Emperors* in my head.

Although I don't think I'd have the guts to run it for fear if being accused of cultural appropriation or something.

*leader would be called "Godspeed" lol.

Dont see why people would have a problem, theres already complaints due to lack of 'representation' in the hobby.

Pfff My Mortheim gangers all had jewish names because they sound funny. "Shlomo Weintraub" and such so no worries mate.

If you are a nice guy noone will assume something bad. :)

In fact my Goliath will be all black and named Mr-T, Black Cobra and so on.

Basically we play an '80 styled game so I strongly recommand rocking the '80 stereotypes.

A Miamy Vice gang would be cool as well, by the way....

I would be cautiously interested in an Afrofuturism gang - one that comes from a place of authentic Afrofuturism, be it from the continent, or one that is more diaspora - rather than the fear of African-American males seen in 80s-90s gang movies (eg Predator 2) - which thankfully Necromunda avoided. Consider Nnedi Okorafor's recent TedTalk:

Also consider Tor.com's list of Afrofuturist writers in Kenya and the UK. I wonder about Afrofuturist van saars ? But I'd worry how to do it - would it just be something bad, ultimately?

Could one go for a Wakanda inspiration?

Ta-Nehisi Coates's Black Panther has amazing imagery too.

The Wakanda gets my vote , that movie looks like its going to hit it out of the ball park :biggrin.:

i think if somethings done with genuine intent and care for the theme it should be well accepted.

Cheers, Mithril

My Escher gang are leaning towards Imperator Furiosa or MaMa from Judge Dredd... My wifes Goliaths are going to be shiny and chrome roided up Warboys complete with Immortan Joe himself!

I'm planning the same thing - I'm using names from all the Mad Max movies though.  So my leader will probably be Hugh Mungus (a little play on words) and other gangers will be Ironbar, Toecutter (did you know he's the same actor who played Immortan Joe?) and so forth.

Furiosa and the wives may be the inspiration for my Eschers.

As far as other cultures for gangs?  I painted up an entire Afrofuturistic (interesting word) Goliath gang for a friend many years ago.  No reason why a world of trillions would all have the same skin tone, right?

Just popping by to mention Omega in Mass Effect 2. Some of the visuals are very much Underhive (especially once you take away the more overt neon).

Good idea!

For Cyberpunk, as a kid playing with Necromunda/Inquisitor ideas, I was really inspired by Akira and Ghost in the Shelli, but I was mashing these with high-tech Imperium a la Gudrun and even Thracian Primus in Eisenhorn novels.

The montages (GHost City in GitS )and from Innocence:

Oh and one of my favourite eps of Stand Alone Complex was Saito's remembrance of his sniper battle with the major, or the amazing knife fight between Batou and Kuze

Sorry to add another post, but this is a featurette about making the architecture of Blade Runner 2049:
