Idomeneus
Hi all. This thread was initially intended to be purely a project thread for my Horus Heresy DA, but, as I looked at the numerous threads I have opened on different forums, I realised most of them died when I got distracted by a new and shiny thing. Therefore, while this one will initially be dominated by Dark Angels, I thought I would leave my options open to the next idea to hit my head at the right angle. Knowing my luck, having taken this initial precaution, I will stay ruthlessly on project for the next 10,000 points. You have been warned. Geromaziel, Lorde Wyrmwoode, Scion of Terra Brothers Munkar and Qaphsiel Brother Phanuel and Decurion Netzach Brother Maalik Just to clarify, while these guys use Primaris marines as a base, they aren't Primaris fluff-wise. They will also be run as Intercessors, because I think the rules better represent the Space Marines we see in fluff. But they remain regular, run of the mill, boring immortal transhuman killing machines for all other purposes. Then the other half of the army will be made up of Legion Auxilia, or Scutiferi. Scutiferi A tradition among some of the less progressive knightly orders of old Caliban, the peasantry would be drafted in as auxiliaries to the knights. These shield bearers, or Scutiferi, were subordinate to the aristocratic knights, the Armigers. While the rise of the Order, and later the advent of the Legions, would remove the divisions of class from the military, some Calibanites still took up service as Scutiferi, subordinate not to old bloodlines, but the new transhuman aristocracy. They would be used to augment Legion forces where greater numbers of Astartes could not be spared. While many Legions would rely on the Imperial Army to supply such troops, the isolationism and self-reliance of the Dark Angels required a force that operated under their own auspices, clandestine, reliable and loyal. The mob shortly after assembly. Progress as of yesterday. Once I finish ten I will treat myself to a Space Marine for a change of pace. And an individual shot of the first model I got done. Scutifer Tertius Parceval Vosk Parceval Vosk, son of Caliban. One of thousands to join the Legion as auxiliaries, proud simply to serve Caliban’s finest warriors as they threw back the dark of Old Night. Equipped with a high powered lasgun and heavy plate armour, Vosk was nonetheless deemed expendable by his superiors, ideal for such jobs as garrison duty, or being the test model for a larger force. Thanks for reading. hushrong
Oh, these are great! I have to say Lord Wyrmwoode takes the cake with that sweet pose! Where is that sigil/banner from? OakRiver
Beautiful work. Since they were released I've liked the idea of the Primaris as the basis for true scale Marines rather than a breed in their own right. Vairocanum
Some fantastic Dark Angels! The FW parts work really well with the primaris models. Hope to see more epic character models like Wyrmwoode within the next 10000 points! Idomeneus
Cheers guys, glad you like them. Not surprised that Lord Wyrmwoode is the favourite so far, he took ages to decide on the pose. I believe he is the most time consuming infantry model I have ever made, largely because waiting on a bitz order gave me time to perfect him. Hushrong: the sigil is the top of the vexillary from the Solar Auxilia lasrifle section. I hadn't planned on using it, but tried it out on a backpack and really liked it. Oakriver: I can see both sides of the Primaris argument, I'm convinced that they can be made cool by good writing, but I have to admit they make really simple, effective truescale marines. Variocanum: Cheers man. We shall see about more character models. The 10,000 points is most unlikely. Since posting these I've already started thinking about Alpha Legion and Word Bearers. If I can get this list to 50 power fully painted I'll consider it a job well done! Painting of Scutiferi continues, if not apace, then, you know, continually. Not letting myself touch a Marine till 10 are done is proving an effective motivator (I've decided on Maalik and Netzach as my treat). I did let myself relax with this, however: Turned up yesterday, and I wasted little time. Base colours on. Washed and drybrushed. And finished. Also shown here is the other model I have completed since my last post. Ventenar Caspian Randle Ventenars, or commanders of 20 men, are the basic line officers of the First Legion’s Auxilia. Caspian Randle is a typical example of the breed, solid, competent, and unimaginative in his way of making war. He bears a heavy power axe, both a badge of office and a way of taking down enemy champions who may pose a threat to his men. Though of a lower station than his transhuman masters, Randle was still a warrior of Caliban, and to seek out and destroy the largest, most dangerous foes is in his blood. For defeating a Legionary of the VIII Legion in single combat during the Thramas Crusade, Randle received a promotion to Centenar, or leader of 100 men. He did not last long in this position, a stray bolt round hitting his exposed throat in the next engagement. His remains were placed into storage to receive honourable burial upon the fleet’s return to Caliban. Ventenar Randle leads a team of Scutiferi to secure the Plasma Reactor on the VIII Legion warship The Unchained King. So yeah. I'm using Veletaris models as the officers for my Scutiferi, partly for cost reasons and partly because the Solar Auxilia Commander model is far too fancy for a mere serf. The main issue I have found with the models is the difficulty of photographing them. There seem to be few good angles where you don't end up with a blurry axe head in the centre of the frame. Thanks for reading, the next update should be when I start work on some actual Legionaries. Painting up the Zone Mortalis board has sharpened my desire to see some painted marines on it! Idomeneus
Forgive me brothers, it has been a long time since my last confession... So yeah, I got distracted. But I have got some things done. As you can see, Lord Wyrmwoode is complete! Also another 5 Scutiferi, but I realise that successfully grinding through basic troops is not as impressive (it is to me, because I can never do it). Some more angles. So, I was distracted by Necromunda, specifically the idea of doing an Alpha Legionnaire fighting a proxy war with an Inquisitor in the Underhive. This was, however, as far as I got before I swung back due I Legion. Finally this will be done! I will unleash the fury of Caliban and Terra on my foes! So I trotted down to GW to pick up a new brush and some paints... ...Damn. It turns out they were having a painting competition, and I had been eyeing up the new Lieutenant Tolmeron model for a while. I bought him, did a bit of conversion work, and here he is. He's going to receive a dark iron/metallic black sort of scheme, based on the success of the AL idea of multiple washes over silver. Ideas for chapter names/symbols would be appreciated, though I really want to put a little eye on his left pauldron, SoH style. Maybe a chapter obsessed with the Black Legion after Horus murder of their primarch? Who knows. Thanks for reading. ephrael
I like your use of the Primaris Marines as true scale regular marines, it makes perfect sense to me. I’m just starting some DA myself so it’s good to know the FW parts fit perfectly. The painting of Lord Wyrmwoode is excellent, especially the freehand designs. May I ask why he has an Eye of Horus on his right leg? Did he serve with the SoH or is there something more sinister to it?
