Howdy! After years of stalling, doing research, lurking, and general procrastination I have finally put brush to model and begun my first army. I have painted a bit on and off, and after a couple of abortive attempts I have finally settled on a scheme that looks good and is easy to replicate. Sure, they look like Blood Angels or Word Bearers, but I am happy with them thus far. This army will be my DIY Chapter, the Red Fangs.

They are both in their final stages, they just need decals and weathering on their shoulder pads and finally basing. First, pictures, then a question/favor.

The test guy, and first member of my first tactical squad, the picture represents the red well:

MK IV

The second guy, finished tonight:

#2

#2.2

And the two together:

Bros

The Images are shoddy at best, but not bad for smartphone pics. Fluff to come, as that is my thing. Now for the question, what kind of bases should I go for? Starship deck? Urban?

Thanks for any C&C in advance!

*EDIT*

Just realized the bolters need to be drilled! DOH!

Remus Ventanus avatar and no 4th Company army? I believe you monkeigh would call that heresy.

Ok though, I really like how those came out, the weathering is spot on and the eyes are nicely gem'd. Forgive my ignorance, but what chapter/warband are they going to be?

EDIT: For the basing, dark brown mud, or metal decking (dark gunmetal) tend to work with reds.

Thanks Galliard!

I come bearing pictures! I finished building the Demi-squad, and I plan on posting my list here in a while so you guys can see what I am working toward.

First up is the final bolter bearer, I am very pleased with his pose:

Second, the Plasma Specialist, have saved this model for a project for years, glad he finally has a home:

And finally, the Sergeant. He is a bit ornate, but I figure he is Sergeant of the First squad of the company, perhaps former Sternguard. I am happy with his look:

You will notice that none of them have their backpacks, those are painted separately, as are any guns held across the chest, such as the plasma gun or the sergeant's right arm. Here is a picture of them primed, it also shows a bit of my setup for painting:

Unfortunately I ran out of my red spray, got the backpacks and half a dude sprayed:

I will be picking up more spray (Tamiya Metallic Red for those who care to know), along with some weathering pigments tomorrow. Hopefully I will have another update then!

Those marines are looking great. I always love seeing them posed differently, and with unique armor sets. Shame about your spray running out though. Anyways, I have a feeling you'll love weathering powders. They're definitely a favorite modeling item of mine.

Thanks for the replies guys! I was able to pick up some more spray paint today (after an hour and a half adventure), but unfortunately the shop didn't have any weathering pigments in stock. I will be ordering them, as well as some custom decals and various other modeling supplies after the holidays.

I was able to finish up the last three members of the squad, and I am quite pleased with how they came out:

And the Sergeant, who I am particularly pleased with:

I noticed a handful of things that will need to be touched up, such is the glory of high resolution pictures!

Finally, I have a badly washed out group shot:

I need to build a Lieutenant and a Razorback next, followed by a Sniper Scout Squad and a Dreadnought. I also have begun drafting up some fluff, I have a loose theme in mind. I should have something on the front in the next couple of days.

As always, thanks for looking!

The weathering is heavier than I expected. How long have these Marines been in the field?

Currently they are engaged in a war with a minor Black Crusade, Orks, Tau, and a Haemonculus Coven (all friends' armies). So quite a while. It's how I imagine marines would look after any amount of time in the hellish warzones of the 41st millenium.

I prefer the weathered look to the parade ground perfect highlight look, and frankly I am not a very skilled painter so using sponge weathering is kind of a crutch to get good results fast for me. I appreciate the reply! :)

Nothing wrong with that, it looks good. I started out painting like that too, and I still prefer it to edge highlighting every surface of a model.

Anyway, I love your squad, the sergeant and Mk4 guys are my favorite.

I began work on the Lieutenant, still sorting the pose, I think he is close. He is armed with a Mastercrafted Boltgun and the Teeth of Terra:

++++++++

Thanks for all the replies! You are keeping me motivated, which I appreciate!

Liking that gold you've got going; the weathering looks great too.

It's actually really simple, Balthazar Gold washed with Agrax Earthshade, then go back with more of the Earthshade and focus on the deepest recesses when that dries. Dark, but looks good in natural light.

Blindhamster

they look superb all painted up, great work!

Thanks man! Your Blood Angels are an inspiration, I am flattered that you like my humble attempts!

Robbienw

Very nice work!

Also, great use of sergeant raphael legs on the marine holding his bolter up, i may steal this idea :biggrin.:

Ha! Good eye! Steal away man, there are not enough resting marines out there!

Thanks Archon! It all comes down to personal taste! Glad you like 'em and I appreciate the continued support!

I made a start on the fluff for these guys, so the title of the thread has been changed. If you guys want to read about them you can do so here:

I also am about halfway through painting the lieutenant, will hopefully finish up tomorrow:
