[DW] Blackthorn and Swordhand: OOC Thread

Hm. Not sure about the GM/other players but a CC jump pack Marine with a long-range rifle seems a little odd. Any reasoning behind this preference?

It fit with the theme of the chapter itself.

The character would still be melee weapons first and foremost using the rifle (or a stalker) as a secondary weapon rather than a regular bolter or shotgun.

Thanks, A.T. - just about to reply to it now.

What I would say, as the kill-team begins to solidify, is that as Xin Ceithan said earlier we have a lot of dour and serious warriors, haunted by their failures, etc., etc. I would be keen to have some members who really enjoy that they're in the Deathwatch, that are proud or want to over themselves in glory.

In terms of guidance for those looking to create characters I would say - no last survivors, no Badab War Chapters (as far as possible) and no dour and silent warriors!

Slips - was good to sit down and create the background with you, especially the power armour.

I can certainly work with that - I was just going with the background event I had rolled when creating the character but I had a few other concepts I was playing with.

Probably worth asking now if the general built itself (with a degree of stealth, etc) is ok, or if I should look at angling the whole character towards something less subtle?

So...concepts...you said...

The post Badab War reminder helped me along some decisions as I threw out obviously involved Chapter origins (Salamander, Charcharodon) as well as saving me the trouble of brewing up traits for Executioners or Mantis Warriors (Did I mention how sad I still am that those weren't given any official traits?)

Anyway..

Reviewing my sketches for the last DW set-up, I liked the Techmarine pilot background as it helped me to get away from the TechPriest in Power Armour mindset. I took this into the Raven Guard concept more as a background thing as I figured there are little opportunities to actually pilot a Thunderhawk or smaller gunship in game and yet, with a more narrative play style, would not impair me by not having accessed some skills for background use and little value in actual play. Still like the the idea of...

Raven Guard: Techno-Shinobi

Actually void born, grew up in an orbital/ inner system dark hold gang environment and learned to survive by his wits and using the technological landscape to survive. A trait which was further developed after being inducted into the Raven Guard and chosen for Techmarine training. Initially focusing on close air support, the RG necessity for cross training saw him involved in several ground actions where his skills allowed for gaining access to enemy strongholds and information as well as turning assets such as automated defenses against the enemy. A survivor of The Damocles Crusade, his experiences expanded his abilities in non linear warfare. In addition, he is much more tolerant and open towards human allies, having learned to appreciate their aid to the mission where other Astartes often decry mortals as puny and useless. Sees himself as the professional type, observant, soft spoken and almost obsessively avoiding making a noise unless deliberately planned. Would rather live to fight another day than go out in uneconomical glory and thus failing in his objectives. Sees recruitment into the DW as a nod towards his achievements without making to much of a fuss of it. Not very pious - "there are no miracles, there are only men".

(Also -have never seen a beaky Techmarine before. Given the less rulebound narrative back then style, I imagined his Armour with a couple of gadgets such as in built Kogake style climbing aidsand a hidden blade or two. Dynamic mechatendrils over fixed power arm...near artifact level, I envisioned something of a nanofabric cloak which looks like a camouflage cloak made from raven feathers while inactive, flowing into strands of mechatendrils while active. Obviously not starting level equipment ;) )

Blood Angel: Artificer Paladin

Driven by an unending curiosity and need to improve the world around him, he set out to reach the Angel's Fall as soon as he was physically able. Encountering other braves on his journey, he convinced them to work together to reach their goal and while being the only one of his group chosen for initiation into the Blood Angels, found strength in the knowledge that they had all survived and his companions had been honoured by being chosen as Guardians of the trials.

Being infused and transformed by the Angels blood not only strengthened his convictions but also left him with a deep, inner sense of piety as he felt a connection to the divine force of Sanguinius and the Emperor conveyed by the blood of the Primarch. A trait that often manifests in the constant need to improve on the world around him in simple ways and a sense of responsibility coupled with a deep feeling of sorrow over the way mankind has suffered from the ignorance and deprivation since the Great Crusade. His scout sergeant chided him a "dreamer" but there was no denying his focus and dedication once combat was joined.

Away from the battlefield, he has lend the gifts of his blood to furthering the interests of mankind, such as accompanying techno archeological expeditions during his time on Mars or aiding in the construction of irrigation pathways along the Imperial Mission.

Relatively young for a Blood Angel, he has begun experiencing the Dreams of the Black Rage more after his return from the Scouring of Ultramar and thus volunteered for service in the Deathwatch, feeling that he should lend his talents to the Imperium as a whole now before the condition worsens and prevents him from fulfilling his duties.

(Less of a zealous burn the witch type and more of a fulfillment of duty before time ends kind of paladin. Have neat idea of merging the Mechanicus skull with Blood Angel aesthetics and envision the bionic parts much more refined in a renaissance da Vinci style way over the usual bolted on imperial look.

Would make nice Flesh Tearer with a few twerking of background details, further emphasizing the dichotomy of Creation/Destruction in combination with the Angel outlook. Also, let's me use words like "dichotomy" )

White Scar: The oncoming Storm, humbled

"Gifted". "Audacious". That is what they used to call him. Relying on his natural talents, an instinctive connection to the spirits of the world around him and a seemingly unlimited amount of luck there was never any doubt in his mind. Trusting in his destiny as a Sky Warrior, he set out to be accepted into the Brotherhood of the Khan and mastered the arcane teachings of Mars. "The Smiling Hawk" soared, hunting the enemies of the Imperium while the spirits of his gunship and the air sang in unity with his warrior's soul.

His skills and convictions were severely tested after his brotherhood was ambushed by Eldar raiders. Calling at every trick at his disposal, he still could not hinder he Eldar from wreaking havoc among his brothers. Seeing no other option and the path of destiny before him increasingly narrowed, he took his craft into a suicidal dive into the leading raider vessel's bridge, which allowed his brothers to turn the tide.

Waking up in the Chapter's apothecariumwas not what he had expected. He discovered that his body had been recovered but had to be partially rebuilt due to his extensive injuries (machine trait). Feeling out of place in his own body and out of sync with the world around him, he has yet to realign his inner center and struggles to connect with the spirits of the Machine. Feeling apart from the natural flow of things, he took the moniker of Xiang Shi and took the Death Watch Oath in an attempt to make peace with himself by battling the enemies of the Imperium face to face.

(Feng Shui reloaded. The outwardly happy go lucky , inner crises issue worked it's way into both my Space Wolf and White Scar concepts, with basically mostly fluff differences. Decided to go with WS as my Iron Priest increasingly felt like a gruffy, power armoured Dwarf smith, runes and all. So, more Jacki Chan and Robo-Zen. But no cookies. Cookies are Dark Side.)

Iron Hand: Council of One

When his scavenger tribe was annihilated by rivals, the young brave survived the wilds of Medusa, tracking and finally killing his tormentors using the debris of the world combined with a cold, calculated cunning which drew the attention of a traveling Iron Father . Mortally wounded in his quest for vengeance, he was recovered and brought to the Clan Fortress, becoming an Aspirant for the Iron Hands Chapter. An aloof and calculating demeanor combined with a sharp, analytical mind proved efficient in mastering the challenges in becoming a Battlebrother and combined with his natural talents in a recommendation for journeying to Mars and becoming a Techmarine.

In this capacity, he served his chapter exemplary among the Damocles Crusade.

Honoured in supporting a Dreadnaught Talon in their assault on a T'au Orbital, his force became separated from the main naval assault due to the unexpected arrival of xenos reinforcements. Refusing to yield to the xenos despite their increasing number, he took to the field along side the chapter's ancients. When the enemy brought down the mechanical behemoths one by one over the course of the ensuing running battle, he began integrating parts of the Ancients to keep the remaining Dreadnaughts -and himself- in the fight. Finally, after destruction of the orbital's powergrid, the integration of the dreadnaught components into his own Armour and body allowed him to be recovered alive after the orbital' s crash when the returned Crusade forces took the planet from the xenos later. With the dreadnaught shells recovered but their occupants deceased, the ancient machines were returned to the chapter.

While chided for his irregular practices, the ruling council of the Clan Companies involved in the Crusade found that logic and circumstances dictated his -supervised- return to frontline services taking precedent over arguing arcane procedures.

Following that incident, he found that, on occasion, the machine spirits of the ancients would intervene on his behalf, rerouting a damaged subsystem just in time, emphasizing a pict feed or hinting at a beneficial arcanos. Later, he would actually receive a word of caution or advise over his internal com and lately even found a hololithic apparition of one of the ancient battle brothers guiding him. Extensive technomantic scrutiny and maintenance found no evidence of empyrean or xenos corruption.

While the Clan Council is still debating whether to banish him for tech heresy , treat him for augmentation psychosis or recognize some sort of techno beatification, he has volunteered for service in the Deathwatch as to not disturb his clan and chapter further and put the advice of his own inner council to use against the enemies of mankind.

(Coming up with something unique outside the usual "the flesh is weak and resistance futile" IH schtick seems quite a challenge here. There is very little to be found on the tribes of Medusa or even what the differences between Clan Companies might be, regarding something to latch on for a character focus. With that, my flu fevered brain meshed the more closely tied mindset of the IH to the Mechanicus cult/ theology with a bit of Techno Voodoo. Or maybe he is just getting mad after crashing down from orbit. The IH mindset is not too healthy to begin with...)

So, pick your poison!

Hi, I see you've added some of your equipment and I love that your heavy bolter is named! If you can work your way through giving yourself your Specialist skills and equipment, personal demeanour, movement, wounds and fate. Please leave power armour.

If possible, can you roll your past event from page 100 of Honour the Chapter? Unless you want your Past Event to be something like 'Wrath of the Tyrant'? Do you have thoughts on a Chapter Trapping, also? (For some reason I thought of some sort of medallion given by Huron that's been defaced/scratched out?)

Have done most of that Mol.

With the Chapter Trapping I am trying to come up with something along the lines of your suggestion.  I like the medallion Idea and thought of this:

Wreath of Thorns - (Defaced) This is an embellishment to the helm of the chosen warrior, showing he has taken part in the Suppression of the Badab Uprising.  It marks out that the Battle Brother can be counted upon to do his duty the Master of Badab.  However,  this honour has been partially defaced, turning it more into a mark of penitence than honour. It provides +3 to Willpower rolls for the Battle Brother. (Basically it's a BT Devotion Chain without the Cohesion assist).

How does that sound?

Am also working on the Past Event - I got the Rogue Trader one - this is actually quite a boon to Akkad, since his personal circumstances and demeanour will put him on the orbit of the social and political spectra, this detached duty provided by being a RT's bodyguard will help him to assimilate to a small group of warriors out on a quest in the darkness of space and give him the option to build bridges with his KT.

Any comments from anyone appreciated.

Hi Xin, thanks for your efforts in trying to come up with unique ideas. I do think that out of them, the Iron Hand is the best one to explore something unique and not step on the toes of anyone else in the Kill-Team.

The "Price of Victory" Deed is quite a useful one for you - two best-craftsmanship cybernetic implants (cannot be servo-arm, servo-harness, MIU or augur array.) This in addition to the cybernetic you get for being a Techmarine and the bionic hand that all Iron Hands get.

MR: I like the wreath, though my personal opinion is that it should be elsewhere on your armour. I saw you've put down Mk7 but with the players so fire (Nineswords and Slips) I've encouraged them to roll on the tables in Rites of Battle to determine what mark they have and which power armour histor(ies) they roll for. If you're up for that, it would be good.

Mol - what about maybe on the pauldron - so the Chapter pauldron contains three icons?  In the middle the Lion's head, left corner, a mark of the Maelstrom Warders and right corner the Wreath?

Xin/et al - I understand the point about  a "sombre" bloody mob, but that's what warrior monks are right? :tongue.:  Besides, this is where we start as an amalgamated group of individuals...it's up to us as players to push the characters as close as we can to one another, so it goes from:

"Templar, I will assist you as we are Astartes."

To:

"Brother Decius is under fire! By the Throne Brother, I am coming!"

Regarding an Astral Claw...

Wouldn't an Astral Claw make most sense as a Black Shield? That's almost the entire point of Black Shields, after all.

Interestingly, I play an Astral Claw Black Shield in another game, and my 2,000 point army is led by a Captain who is an Astral Claw Black Shield. :)

Revised character history -

A battle brother of only a few years. Heavy losses incurred by the chapter followed by a period of quiet and unusual success amongst neophytes had brought the forces of the Revilers over strength, and the most promising of the 10th company were offered a place amongst the Deathwatch to further their training rather than the ranks of the chapters reserves.

Atratus was one of many to apply, rising to claim the honour through a combination of skill, guile, and sheer will.

Classification Indigo Delta

Subject: Julio Castro

Rank: Watch Sergeant

Parent Chapter: Crimson Fists

Speciality: Assault

Honours:

  • Iron Skull - Awarded for holding his Devastator Squad together after the death of their Veteran Sergeant.
  • Aquila - Awarded for advanced knowledge of the Codex Astartes.

Events of note:

  • Defeated an Ork Nob in personal combat (disputed) - Although Watch Sergeant Castro denies this, his Battle-Brothers claim he slew an Ork Nob in personal combat.
  • Early promotion - Watch Sergeant Castro received his Iron Skull after a remarkable short term of service, whilst still a Devastator Marine.
  • Recruited from Rynn's World - Watch Sergeant Castro was not recruited from a feral world, but from a school for gifted youngsters on the much more civilised Rynn's World.

Assessment:

  • Quote, Company Apothecary - "Watch Sergeant Castro maintains his physique as is expected from an Adeptus Astartes. Notably, though, he is yet to suffer even a superficial injury in the practice cages, indicating remarkable skills with a blade.
  • Quote, Company Chaplain - "Brother Julio, yes, he is a bright one - he is unusually flexible for a son of Rogal Dorn, yet he still retains the iron will one would expect form his lineage. His knowledge of the alien is only surpassed by his distaste for it, as is only right."
  • Quote, Watch Captain - "Although well below average scores on the firing range show failings in this regard, Watch Sergeant Castro has shown himself to be surprisingly adept at leading fire support elements, and working with battle-brothers with extremely different skill sets from himself."

I had a long conversation with Nineswords yesterday in which we were able to roll up a great deal of his character. As you saw from his brilliant text piece earlier, Greysight's background has been fleshed out pretty well. I really enjoyed the sense in which a distinct character was evolving in front of us - for example, the "Green Hells" past event being the deathworld of Deluge, which Nineswords has been able to add to his Storm Sons fluff.

Nineswords
A few things - your movement needs to be added in to your sheet. Full move is 2x your agility bonus, half move is your agility bonus, charge is 3x your agility bonus and run is 6x your agility bonus. You also have a skill which is labelled as Tactics (Choose) - your choices are  Air Combat, Armoured Combat, Assault Doctrine, Defensive Doctrine, Orbital Drop Procedures, Recon and Stealth or Void Combat.

Thanks very much Molotov. I will look at these action points over the next day. I only have one question from a narrative perspective just to help with my internal timeline, but can you tell us in what Segmentum the watch fortress is?

Thanks!

Hi all, this is where I am at the moment:

8RqyhZw.png

Steel Company

Don't forget I am quite keen for this version of Tyber to be as fresh as possible (and perhaps not so meticulously crafted.) At this stage, you can choose your Tactical Skill and your specialist equipment. I would like you to roll a new Past History if possible - partly because we already have some characters who have expressed they are the last survivors of their forces and I don't want it to be repetitive. As before, I'm happy with you rolling on the Honour the Chapter table. If you could also select your personal demeanour, enter your movement, your wounds and your fate points (not including the deeds, etc., that you will add later.)

Mol,

Did you get the e-mail with the attached file with the rundown on the Dragons of Caliban? If not, I can resend it.

New Past History role, from Honour the Chapter:

Past History: 1d10 10

+++Archive Deleted+++

LOL, this could be fun Apperently I'm to have experience facing Chaos.... That I don't remember doing.

Let's re-roll that, just to have something a bit different....

Past History: 1d10 9

Honor Guard

This could work... now to re-do everything else.

Armour type roll:

Armour Mark: 1d10 10

Mk. VIII "Errant"

Armour History table:

Armour history table: 1d5 5

Chose table, Death watch core book

Armor History:

Armour history table: 1d10 8

Lead from the front, Add +1 to Kill Team's cohesion (stacks with any other sources)

Okay this is starting to take shape, nice when the dice (RNG) work together to build a story...

I'm going to go with Bolter Mastery this time, let other pick up the Tactical Expertise side of things this time.

Starting Wounds:

Wounds: 1d5+18 19

Fate points:

Fate Points: 1d10 10

Carrying Capacity... that's just silly, in PA I'm apparently able to carry a car, 1350kg or push a delivery truck at 5400kg. Some how I don't think the weight of the equipment I'm lugging around is going to mater...:whistling:

Since you don't want us picking a deed yet, I'm not going to have a combat shield... not unless I can write something for you to justify it.... and that puts me onto my next task, fleshing out Tyber, and re-posting something.

Tyber, a giant of an Astartes whom claims his gene seed lineage leads all the way back to some of the first Astartes of the first legion, passed from hero to hero down the millennia to him, he finds it a source of pride and strength, reassurance that he is destined for great things. It would be easy to mistake him for a gene son of one of the more social Primarchs, rather than a gene son of the Lion. Boisterous and welcoming on the surface, yet under that exterior lays his true self, ambitious. He stands proud, one of only a handful with in the Dragons of Caliban to be intrusted with a new Mk. VIII Errant pattern of armour. The Lion, the Emperor and Master Voltarn must see great things ahead of him.

The weight of this history is not lost on Tyber,  just as it drives him reach further, try harder yet he cannot escape the thoughts of how foolish he had been, when he took his first steps in the path of the giants that came before him. He had been a champion of trials, which places youths of the Tygrus Primus in direct martial competition with each other, to weed out the unworthy. He had been overjoyed at being first among equals, taken to the Fortress Monastery to face a Neophyte or full Battle Brother in martial combat as their next step on the path to ascension; the Aspirant simply approaches their choses foe then issues a challenge. It was here that Tyber’s ambition truly took hold; he challenged a full Battle Brother. The fight was short, brutal and surprising; Tyber landed one blow against the brother. His arming sword had managed to bite into the flesh of the Brother on the left inner thigh, the responding blow from a fist of the Battle Brother was the last thing Tyber would see or hear until he awoke in the care of the Chapter’s Apothecaries. The first of many steps and hard lessons for him, yet also placed him as one to watch with in the chapter.

Barely 100 years into his service, He’d been selected by Master Voltarn himself to be the one to carry their scared standard, a relic of a great crusade, into the Halo Stars for their latest crusade into that region to bring yet more worlds into the fold of the Imperium of Man. Standing beside the Master of the chapter, First Claw Captain Hathorn and Second Claw Captain Vasquez placed Tyber in a position to see the battle in the large picture, gain a greater understanding of the tactics involved. Yet when time came to deliver the killing blow, Tyber stood shoulder to shoulder with Master Voltarn and the rest of the command squad, being so close to the center of power within the Dragons of Caliban, only served to feed his ambition, to rise to the great highest of his gene fathers that came before.

When the Death Watch issued a summons to the Dragons of Caliban, Tyber volunteered for assignment to the noble calling, seeing it as a place for him to gain prominence both with the Death Watch and the Dragons of Caliban, as the Dragons honour all honours and privileges earned with in the Death Watch when the brother returns to them. Now standing in the embarkation deck of the Watch Fortress, he looks at his new ‘brothers’, in an attempt to gage their strengths and weaknesses, to see if any can stand to match his lineage, while unconsciously touching the Purity seal on his right pauldron.

++ rewritten to better accommodate the new past, new armour and new armour history. ++

That's pretty cool :)

If the obvious Astral Claw gives the party or the GM any trouble, sure, a Black Shield path would help to mitigate that and I don't mind chopping and changing and it and If Akkad is a Black Shield then it opens the possibility up to have other Babab War characters (which I don't mind either) but he is also so unknown I think it takes out all the dramatic tension and foreshadowing.

I like the idea of your chapter being known, for Tyber it will make for some personal conflict for him, as his home chapter abhor traitors to the Emperor. So it will force him to grow beyond his chapter's view and learn to accept Akkad as a brother, once the events of the War become known to Tyber.

For those who haven't gotten to spending the 1k Starting xp we all have and are quite particular about your character having a piece of gear/wargear that they would otherwise be unable to start the game with, look into the 500xp Talent called "Signature Wargear" under General Space Marine advances on Pg60 of the core book.

This lets you take any item 20 requisition or under that you meet the Renown requirements for as Signature Wargear.

Alternatively, our Tactical Marines could pick up the Specialty Deed "Right Gear For The Job" for 400xp which lets you essentially get one of the following as Signature Wargear:

  • Hand Flamer
  • Flamer
  • Combi-Flamer
  • Plasma Pistol
  • Astartes Shotgun
  • Astartes Sniper Rifle
  • Astartes Chainsword
  • Astartes Power Sword
  • Best-Craftsmanship Astartes Scout Armour
  • Astartes Combat Shield

All of these items are available to you even if you do not meet the Renown Requirements unlike the regular Signature Wargear Talent.

Also, if you make a compelling enough case for the GM, they may just allow you to pick up that one (reasonable) piece of gear regardless.

In that case you'll be pleased with Ultor - he's actually happy to be here since its part of his chapter's culture. Now if only he wasn't so hot-blooded...

Funnily enough, the power armor history I rolled was A Hero's Spirit, which fits with the ancestor worship of the Forge Fathers.

So the jury vote on DeatchWatchnextTechmarine is ...Iron Hands.

If that is ok with Morovir (who is listed as wanting to go this way also), I 'll begin to roll up stats and add some details. Thanks for the idea with the Deed (I was under the impression that this something you acquire later on) and Equipment advice (@Slips).

Still the least gregarious concept (or at least Chapter ) to me ;) Is there any fluffnugget in some one's head if maybe one of the Clan companies being known as unnecessarily emotional or outgoing (from an IH perspective at least )?

I certainly see my character as honoured and even glad to be able to serve in the DeathWatch. It's the best place to do their duty to the Emperor at this point of their existence from their point of view.

Atratus gazed upon his new armour, drawn from the armouries of the Deathwatch. It was a patchwork of mismatched pieces scavenged from the bodies of fallen warriors across the millennia, each with its own past and honours, all held together by heavily armoured cabling and frequent visits to the artificier.

Yet somehow though the skill of its creators or the grace of the Emperor this suit of armour had become far greater than the sum of its parts, as though freed from the constraints of its original construction. Every action seemed magnified by its servo motors, faster, stronger, more precise, and Atratus wondered at what strange machine spirit lurked at its heart.

Rolls for background and xp -

Wounds = Roll 5 = 23

Fate = Roll 3 = 3

Armour = Roll 3 = Corvus

Armour background = Roll 8 = Mk4 Pauldrons of Fury

Armour background = Roll 7 = Mk4 Gauntlets of Xirion

500xp - No Quarter Given (+3 WS, Counter-attack)

300xp - Battle damage = Roll 5 = Mk6 elements (additional roll required = Roll 3 = Upgraded legs) - unless this is a completely free choice rather than a roll.

200xp - Increase Weapon Skill +5

Character History: Daon Akkad.

Born on Badab Primaris, to a noble house, Brother Daon Akkad took his place among those defiant against the Maelstrom under the command of Chapter Master Rovik Blake.  When forced to retreat from the Ork infested world that claimed the same leader, Akkad was as enraged as any other.  He was initially elated when his own Company Captain, Lugft Huron was elevated to the commander in chief - there were even some rumblings of dissent that would ripen later, but Akkad dismissed them at the time as being the innate rivalry between the noble houses of Badab Primaris.

Akkad believed Huron loyal to the Emperor and Badab, but his demeanour left a poor taste in the mouth of others.  Through the years of change and service, Akkad served with his Devastator Squad, time and again, to crush rebels, aliens, daemons in the name of the Tyrant, the initial misgivings of the others forgotten in the crucible of the constant war surrounding his world.

After the uprising and civil war in 718.M41 Akkad received the honour of the Wrath of Thorns, a sigil artificed onto his shoulder, alongside his crusade badges - the most prized among them being the mark of the Maelstrom Warders, a significant brotherhood of warriors fighting the evil vomited forth by the warp tear that dominated the sector.

In the aftermath of the campaign, a lot of the Astral Claws began to paint the personal heraldry of the Tyrant upon their shoulders, azure blue, with black talons gripping the stars that were, Akkad admitted, theirs to claim.  No diktat was issued at the time and it was more of an avowal to the Lord of the Chapter that these men were for him and for his throne.

Akkad and his squad were sent to train the forces that were now coming to form the Tyrant's Legion.  This excepted him from duties on the homeworld and he did not see the destruction of the old nobility, houses Adrados, Pantheus and Forsanvar were all gone.  The levies of personal troops inducted were drilled and where they failed were executed.

The Tyrant's Legion were only human.  En masse they could be formidable and in several campaigns Akkad himself threw them into the fire against Rebel artillery, trenches and fortifications.  They could not live up to being a Marine and he would not risk his own when a rabble of humans could do the job.  They were replaceable, his Marines were not.  He made the comment out loud once, in the presence of a Legion General.  His squad laughed darkly and added their own colourful jokes in Badabian.

As the Chapter grew and began to take in more recruits, Akkad began to notice a change in the manner of what was now, the Legion.  Whilst still deeply immersed in his beliefs, he was a loyalist to the Emperor first and Badab second, but long buried arguments and the distaste with how Huron was dealing with other agencies began to abrade the confidence in his Liege.  More than this he noticed that fewer and fewer of the old Chapter remained, the rest adopting the heraldry that now made Akkad clench his teeth.  Even three members of his own squad stood beside him with the Star and Claw.

By 790.M41 Akkad had been relieved of garrison duty as the Tyrant's Legion dug in and held the line.  The system was secured as strongly as it had ever been and the Astral Claws were free to attack into the teeth of the storm.  Akkad himself took part in the campaigns of lightning raids against the heretic and rebel habitations and pirate and raider camps.  He became more vocal at the directions taken and began to be assigned more dangerous missions.  No-one moved against him due to the combat experience and the earlier affirmations he had sworn.  He was marked by the Wreath was he not?  He practically built New Badab.  This to and fro continued for the next 4 decades until another turning point in his life.

As politics brewed problems for the Tyrant as he expanded, the caravan of a Rogue Trader entered The Maelstrom Zone, requesting permission to resupply.  Huron, looking for contacts outside of his immediate control that he could perhaps draw into his gambits agreed and certain Centurions, looking to ease tensions within the Legion also availed themselves of the opportunity.  Whilst Huron's lengthy petition was submitted to the High Lords and the Adeptus Terra, Akkad was sworn to the service of Melindra Orduul - by no means a pious individual, yet no degenerate either, her caravan took the Squad Akkad out into the folds of space seeking fortune and glory.

In his time with Orduul, Akkad soon learned the nature of naval void warfare and, his chapter having certain specialisations in that field, conducted hazardous boarding operations as well as command of some smaller ships.  The power and brutality of the Astral Claws gave the Trader a firm iron fist in both negotiations and the scrapes she managed to get into, but it also had the effect of opening Akkad's eyes to what was happening outside the Maelstrom Zone.

When he returned to the bosom of his brothers, heaped with trophies and honours, he found that they and he had both changed in their absence.  Their brutality was stark, their arrogance unbecoming, even for a Badab Noble.  The order to paint his shoulder came.  He refused, as was his privilege, but as the decades rolled on, his squad thrust time and again into the fire.  His fate was sealed, when he finally saw how far the Astral Claws had changed when he witnessed the destruction of Tithe Fleet VX542/11 in 901.M41.  He requested an audience with his Centurion, Samul Darnax and he finally challenged the leadership council too far.

As a Sergeant and a Veteran of numerous battlefields, his voice carried weight.  His heraldry carried weight.  To avoid an issue and remove a thorn in his flesh he thought he had once purged and now could ill ignore, Centurion Sumatris found the answer.  He drew upon the old treaties sworn with other arms of the Imperium and made the suggestion to the Tyrant, having Akkad arrested in the process.

Still working on the kinks.
