GM: Per Nineswords' post in the OOC and the implications of A.T.'s in-character post, I will assume you are placing the maximum 4 krak grenades in each pillar unless you contradict me. There's no kill like overkill!

As the Gatebreaker Apothecary sub-vocalises instructions and ex-loads location runes marking potential biological weaknesses, the Kill-Team begins to cross the chamber.

At the Librarian's urging, the assembled Astartes split into two smaller Demi-Squadrons, your hypnogogic training coming to the fore as your weapons pan left and right in the flickering darkness. After all you have experienced, you are ready for any sign of imminent attack.

Yeng's colourful, metaphorical speech has some weight - this is your opportunity to strike a telling blow. Even as the Gatebreaker kneels to plant a cluster of krak grenades, others are replicating the movements on other flesh-pillars.

As you plant each bundle of grenades, runic symbols pulse urgently on your vambraces. It is as though the primitive machine-spirits yearn to unleash destruction - and it is an urge you can sympathise with entirely.

GM: Please see Apologist's post in the OOC regarding the composition of the two Demi-Squads.

Montesa

The Codicier moves forward, supported at his shoulder by Ghent. Your fellow son of Dorn has been even more taciturn than usual since your return to the bio-ship. It is a timely reminder to you that not all scars are physical - but that some are worn more plainly than others. The Invader is silent, his bolter and chainsword at the ready as he watches the chamber for any sign of attack.

As you place a gauntleted hand against the central pillar, you feel a convulsive thrum through your ceramite fingertips that sets gooseflesh rippling under your armour.

Your psychic other-senses have enabled you to feel the minds of those around you - even to glean the thoughts that buzz around careless minds like carrion flies around a corpse. It is a gift you have honed and sharpened through careful meditation and mental discipline. It is a gift that served you well as guardian of the Holy Sepulchre, tending to the heroes of your Chapter as they slumbered within the Dreadnought sacrophagi. Indeed, it is a gift that likely strengthened your candidacy for the Deathwatch, who harbour a great appreciation of the arcane and esoteric.

When you touch the central pillar, it is akin to plunging your hand into a raging river - or a bubbling volcanic pool. This is a mind entirely unlike anything you have encountered - the sheer glacial size and vastness of the consciousness is hard to comprehend at first. Communing with it is as impossible as a grain of sand communing with the wave that crashes against the beach. And yet, as the coldness washes over you, you feel the gnawing, all-consuming hunger that drives the Hive Mind.

And you feel a shift... as though an eye has opened and taken notice of you...

GM: As explained in the email thread and the OOC, I am preparing to create the final boss battle. As time slows here, there are opportunities for you to determine where you are before I create the map, or to continue the process of rigging the flesh pillars. But the Tyranids are approaching...

Noctus: I'm happy for you to have gleaned some way "out" (or "away" from this monstrous presence.) I'm also happy for Montesa to realise that the Tyranids are massing, aware of the threat inside the Synapse Chamber.

When the enemy comes, they come from the walls.

These are not the canine gaunts you have massacred in their thousands. These are not even the deadly Genestealers that you have duelled and destroyed. These are an elite clade, Warrior-strain killers each standing as tall as you in your powered armour. Slithering from the walls, their armoured exoskeletons still glistening wet from mucus and other birthing fluids, you can see the sheen of their scything limbs’ killing edges in the crackling light. Each of these creatures alone is capable of bringing down an Astartes warrior. Together, their lethality is only multiplied.

If this were your only opposition, it would be a dark day indeed. But you are not that fortunate.

Behind the Warriors, the hideous alien majesty of a Hive Tyrant rises to its full height, a full head and shoulders taller than you all. The shining black orbs of its eyes glare with an unblinking intelligence below a wedged crest of armoured chitin. There is appraisal in its gaze, and something approaching hatred, too. The voracious hunger and vicious intent of the Hive Mind made manifest before you in a creature of terrible and horrific majesty. In one arm it wields a sword of jutting bone; in the other, a lash-whip, seemingly coiling and uncoiling its barbed length under its own intelligence. Its secondary arms, held close to its ribcage, clutch a weapon-symbiote that terminates in a flared snout of bone. The bulging sacs that contain the weapon’s living ammunition seethe with barely-contained writhing.

It takes you the space of a single breath to absorb the creature’s nightmarish visage; before the next, your weapons are already raised. You know with absolute conviction that your brothers around you are the same, each of you united in righteous fury and hatred for the Xenos.

Then the chamber fills with the thunder and strobing light of mass-reactive gunfire.

The Codicier drew a slow breath as he approached the central neural spire, ceramite boots pressing into the uneven cerebral cortex beneath them. It left a thin film of viscous slime that clung to the bottom of his boots, but the wet squelching of each step was an ignorable discomfort.

He came to a halt, the angular visage of his MK IV helm craning to peer up the vast spire and deep into the unending blackness above. This was the source of the xenos breed's synaptic communion, a vast containment of something ancient and so fundamentally alien.. The breath he had been holding in finally pushed from his lips, taking a moment to ready himself for what would come next. He had invaded the mind of xenos breeds before, trained in the Watch Towers for just such a responsibility.. but this was different. In the great expanse of the galaxy, there was no breed more foul than the Tyranids, and there was no greater risk for one of his kind to try and brush with the gestalt consciousness of that ravenous Hive...

With another breath, the codicier reached out with mind and body, ceramite fingertips brushing against the cerebral column as the psyker's soul fled from his body.

It was little more than a handful of moments since the Codicier had touched the synaptic tower. To his brothers, Montessa had been standing beside the column for less than five seconds...

But to his soul, it was an eternity..

He was falling.

Falling into darkness...

Falling into a blackness so deep it was like the yawning maw of some truly biblical monstrosity.

He was moving, falling, his mind racing through vast arteries and winding capillary tunnels. It was blackness on all sides, yet all he could see were eyes starting at him from the darkness.

Move quick... Move fast... Find sanctuary.. Find the way to escape this ravenous abyss...

And there it was. Beneath the darkness, he could see it; a faded glint of polished black and burnished silver. A roaring blister that raged with anger into the black sea.. It would burst.. and see them to their safety... But... But how?

And then it was gone, lost in the abyss once more and he found himself standing in pitch emptiness that stretched beyond any mortal imagining... He waded in the black sea of nothingness, searching again to find their only means of escape.. That was... until the sun dawned, a great, lidless sphere of burning yellow that banished back the night.

No... Not a sun..

An eye.. A vast, titanic eye the had peeled open and now stared directly at him....

Codicier Montessa yanked free from the cerebral tower with a heaving gasp of air, staggering until he nearly fell on his back. He righted himself though, hand clutched to the aquilla on his breastplate as he dry heaved into his helm. It was as though he had lost all breath and control over his own functioning systems, his body shivering uncontrollably in rebellion to the psychic presence that had deigned to notice him....

++ Brothers! ++

The Librarian began, still struggling to breathe even as he tried to right himself on shaking limbs.

++They're here!++

But it was already too late....

Forgive the primitive map, I was having issues.

To clear up the names:

Y = YENG

A = ATRATUS

V = VORR

T = TERALIL

Y = Is meant to be TYBER and will be corrected to a B when I get a chance.

M = MONTESA

R = GHENT

G = GREYSIGHT

S = SOLASTION

E = VARVOST

K = AKKAD

N = SABAAN

Red A-L are Warriors A-L

Red O is the Tyrant Overlord

Red 1-3 are Tyrant Guard 1-3.

And so the end comes.

A fine death, by Greysight’s estimation, worthy of the halls of Sunsitai in the retelling, should word ever reach far Nakaris. His sulde, that curious knot of hair that puzzles his brothers in the Deathwatch, vibrates in quiet anticipation of the slaughter to come.

Death, or glory.

Between the hulking warrior-forms crawling into the synapse chamber, the brothers of Blackthorn and Swordhand quietly affix krak charges onto the fleshy pillars, like black ants lurking in the shadow of a vespid’s nest.

Greysight can feel pressure mounting at the base of his skull, some unseen force no doubt generated by the abomination itself. A look at the Zadyin Arga tells everything he needs to know: this must be stopped, and soon.

Saraluzekh, once of the Ordu and now of Blackthorn, clasps his bolt gun a little tighter, taking aim at the nearest creature. ‘Come, then! We have killed your kind many times over and we shall do so again with joy in our hearts. For the Emperor and the Khagan. Hai Nakaris!’

ROUND 0

Tyrant Overlord has Fear (4), causing -40 to all Willpower Tests for all Astartes in Solo Mode.

Solastion makes a Willpower test (-30) to avoid 4 Cohesion Damage: WP53 (23): 93 (FAIL)

The Kill-Team is now at 8 Cohesion. (This is also the target number for the Cohesion Challenge)

The malevolence of the alien knows no bounds. Even as Greysight's challenge echoes over the vox, you feel a palpable wave emanating from the Tyrant, as though you have each been struck bodily. Fear is an emotion alien to the Astartes, and yet each of you feels your veins turning to ice as you feel for a moment the insatiable appetite of a monstrous intelligence so vast that even the countless trillions of star systems within the Imperium are not enough to satisfy its ravenous hunger.

GM:

If you are within 30m (three squares) of another player and the Kill-Team has at least one point of Cohesion, you may enter Squad Mode by either passing a Cohesion Test (rolling a D10 under or equal to 8) or spending a turn doing nothing (clearly not optimal in these circumstances!)

If you fail your Cohesion Test you will lose your next Turn.

If a Brother passes the Cohesion test, all those within 30m may choose to automatically enter Squad Mode as well.

Tyber checked his pistols, making sure that the kraken rounds were in the clips before stepping around the side of the pillar, taking aim at one of the warrior beasts and unleashing a twin shot.

Half move with Jump-pack for 10m towards Warrior J

Single shot at warrior J, using dual wielding Ballistic weapons

TN: 55 (BS:45, -20 for two weapons, +10 ambidexterity, +0 for optimal range [30m], +0 for single shot, +20 Size)

BS test, right arm: 1d100 9 Hit, 4 DoS, location: Left leg

Left Arm:

BS test, left arm: 1d100 2 Hit, 5 DoS, location: Right arm

Nice to see Tyber is keeping up with being a limb hunter….

Right arm damage: 1d10+9 Pen 8; Kraken rounds

Bolt pistol damage: 1d10+9 16

Left arm: 1d10+9 Pen 8; Kraken rounds

Bolt pistol damage: 1d10+9 11

Next round should see him double tapping, or quick drawing his swords.

If needed, Dodge roll for an attack:

TN: 68 (AGI 48+20 dodge skill)

dodge +20: 1d100 67 Just passed

The opening shots had been sent, now they needed to hold long enough to complete their task and get to the Dark Lantern for answers.

The tyranids closed the distance quickly, but not quickly enough for the reflexes of the astartes as bolters were raised to meet their approach. It was quickly clear that these were a strengthened guardian caste of the xenos as explosive rounds and even anti-armour rockets detonated against their carapace without felling them. As the first of many closed the distance Atratus cast his auspex across its form, seeking any weakness in its shell as he opened fire.

Enter squad mode (Vorr is within range)

Attack - Atratus will fire his sniper rifle at warrior B, unless the advancing warriors get into combat first (in which case i'll select a different target or re-set the profile for melee)
Attack = D100 =
7

Damage = 3d10+4 tearing = 7, 2, 9, 10 + righteous fury d10 = 1 :sad.:

Total damage = 31, Pen 7, Felling(2). IIRC 25 wounds to a warrior after toughness and armour

Pre-emptive reaction roll: Dodge(ranged) or Parry(melee) roll if needed = d100 = 6 = pass - will counter attack as required. If he is dogpiled he will use assassin strike to disengage before running out of reactions.

Edited by A.T.

Akkad will attempt to enter Squad Mode.

I don't think Solastion is within 30m of Sabaan though, so I'll husband the Cohesion, just enter SQD.

Tyrant Overlord:

Half Action: Focus Psychic Power (Unfettered): Paroxysm

Montesa uses his reaction here to attempt to nullify the Psychic Power with his Psychic Hood:

Montesa makes a Focus Power Test (Unfettered):

WP65(+5 Psychic Hood, -20 Shadow of the Warp): 9 (PASS, 4 DoS)

Imposing a -40 penalty to the Tyrant Overlord's Focus Power Test.

The Hive Tyrant's Focus Power Test:

WP70(+2 Unnatural WP)(-40 Nullification) = WP32: 65 (FAIL)

Warrior J:

Full Action: Full-Auto Burst against Tyber with Devourer

BS30(+20 FAB): 70 (MISS)

Warrior L:

Run Action: 30 metres forward

Yeng:

Free Action: Joins Squad Mode

If you want to still blow the pillar, you can take a single shot against the rampaging Warrior only metres away from you:

In this case:

BS40(+20 Size)(-20 Run)(+30 Point Blank Range) = BS70

If you hit, your bolter is 1D10+9

Roll your D10 twice and take the highest.

Alternately, if you wish to do a Semi-Auto Burst with your bolter and hopefully hit it a number of times:

BS40(+20 Size)(-20 Run)(+30 Point Blank Range)(+10 Semi-Auto Burst) = BS80

If you roll 80 or less, you hit;

If you roll 60 or less, you hit twice;

If you roll 40 or less, you hit three times.

Each hit is 1D10+9 (Roll your D10s twice and take the highest for each shot.)

Edited by Commissar Molotov

HELLFIRE ROUNDS ARE one of the more ingenious inventions of the Adeptus Mechanicus: the tip of the .75 caliber bolt has been replaced with a constellation of armour piercing micro needles which inject a core of mutagenic acid straight at the target. The effects are lethal; the corrosive acid will eat through most material substances: metal, bone, flesh.

The elite xenoform thrashes wildly, roaring in outrage at the desecration of the tyranid’s nexus. The chamber fills with the anguished shrieking of the tyranid warriors as the brothers of the Deathwatch open fire. Behind him, Greysight can hear the distinctive whoosh of a krak missile, fired at close range.

The Storm Son’s mind aches — the oppressive throb of the synapse chamber’s psychic forcefield is disrupted by the Zadyin Arga, and for a moment, the ethereal pressure pauses, crumpling in on itself before vanishing completely. Greysight exhales in relief, making the most of the respite. The warrior lumbers towards him in a tangle of bone swords and overlong limbs, before simply falling to the ground, mewling weakly as the Hellfire round completed its deadly work.

Greysight grimaces in cold satisfaction, readjusting his aim.

Tyranid Warrior I is killed

Edited by Nineswords

The sound of bolter-fire - intimately familiar to you all after a lifetime waging war - fills the cavern, counterpointed by the alien shrieks and howls of the Tyranids. Some of the Warriors barrel forward, attempting to close the distance so that they can bring their terrible blade-arms to bear. Others remain at range, unleashing a storm of living ammunition that seethes and spits in the sizzling air.

Varvost and Solastion descend on pillars of rocketing fire, the howl of their chainblades adding to the discordant symphony of death. To the Sanguinary Priest’s eye, it is clear that Varvost is struggling; the Eradicator moves slowly, missing openings in the Tyranids' attacks and striking wildly with his chain-axe.

Across the chamber, the Astral Claw plants his feet wide, bringing his heavy weapon to bear. The stalwart heavy bolter that served Akkad so well on the shores of the Maelstrom’s polluted seas has been transformed by Teralil and Sabaan into an Infernus-pattern, the snout of an underslung heavy flamer jutting aggressively underneath the gun’s barrel.

Squeezing and holding the trigger, he unleashes a blazing torrent of fire that seems almost a solid stream of high-calibre bolts. Cadence annihilates one of the Tyranid Warriors, pulverising its chitin and shredding its exoskeleton.

The Storm Son unleashes a trio of shots that strike a Warrior in the ribcage, the mutagenic acid within his bolts turning its organs to slag and puncturing the weapon symbiote's ammunition sacs in a welter of ichor and gore.

The air itself seems to crackle as a nimbus of power forms around the Hive Tyrant's chitinous crown; a gathering of psychic energy that is only matched by the Librarian, Montesa.

Warrior J: Devourer

Edited by Commissar Molotov

Still, he found it difficult to breathe, transhuman physiology struggling to acclimate with the psychic trauma of nearly having one's own soul devoured...

He breathed deep, taking in the recycled air and acrid stink of his own stomach bile before swallowing down a wad of  viscous saliva.

Threat.

No sooner had the motion tracking of his retinal display acquired the target did the Warrior move. Ingrained training taught him to move beyond the fleeting exhaustion and immediately drew his bolter, letting the bolts fly in a measured stream of lethal intent.

Do his best to focus on the target before him, Tyber adjusted his aim slightly to let fly a pair of semi-auto bursts from his pistols.

His proximity augurs warning of danger, and the thrust of psychic Alien tendrils into his mind and body, Akkad fought against the sudden weakness of his usually puissant flesh, combating the terrible lethargy, to swivel at the hip.  Desperately, he extended his arms in order to bring the heated maw of Cadence to bear on a pressing target.  There was no time to talk, only to send the impulse commanding the beast to die with his trigger finger, caressing the firing stud and feeling he weapon respond in kinship to the need.  The world reeled, and he staggered sideways as the stud depressed, his finger slipping to trigger the release of an inferno.

Changed Actions.

BS WS now at 10, so Akkad will take Action: Half Move, towards Sabaan, then Half Action Standard Attack: Flame.

Heavy Flamer:  Range 30m, Cone of fire 30 Degrees.  Akkad's movement tries to bring Targets E and F into line of fire (literally!)

No BS test required.  Targets must take Ag test.  If failed, damage occurs.  If Damaged, must take another Ag test or be on fire.  (Core p261)

Damage: 1D10+12 Dam) +2 (MShot), Pen 6.

Tyrant Overlord:

Half Action: Move

Half Action: Focus Psychic Power (Unfettered): Paroxysm

Montesa uses his reaction here to attempt to nullify the Psychic Power with his Psychic Hood:

Montesa makes a Focus Power Test (Unfettered):

WP65(+5 Psychic Hood, -20 Shadow of the Warp) = WP50: 3 (PASS, 4 DoS)

Imposing a -40 penalty to the Tyrant Overlord's Focus Power Test.

The Hive Tyrant's Focus Power Test:

WP70(+2 Unnatural WP)(-40 Nullification) = WP32: 27 (PASS, 0DoS)

Paroxysm:

Summoning the power of the Hive Mind, the creature assails its foes with crippling pain, tearing at their nerve endings and filling their minds with agony that makes it difficult for them to stand, let alone fight. The Tyranid creature chooses a number of foes within 25xPR equal to its Psy Rating. Those that fail their Opposed Test reduce their Weapon Skill and Ballistic Skill to 10 while they remain affected by the power. The pain also causes -10 to all Intelligence, Perception, Willpower and Fellowship characteristic and skill tests.

The Overlord has Psy Rating 8 and selects the eight closest Astartes:

Akkad: WP45: 57 (FAIL)

Sabaan: WP40: 39 (PASS, 0DoS) - Draw in Hive Tyrant's favour

Montesa: WP65: 62 (PASS, 0DoS) - Draw in Hive Tyrant's favour

Ghent: WP51: 64 (FAIL)

Vorr: WP43: 70 (FAIL)

Teralil: WP45: 75 (FAIL)

Atratus: WP45: 60 (FAIL)

Yeng: WP55: 28 (Pass, 2DoS)

GM: Considering the severity of this power, I'm assuming that players will attempt a Fate Point re-roll.

Sabaan and Montesa may spend a Fate point to add an extra degree of success to beat the Hive Tyrant.

Akkad re-roll: 86 (FAIL)

Ghent re-roll: 36 (PASS, 2DoS)

Vorr re-roll: 13 (PASS, 5DoS)

Teralil re-roll: 62 (PASS, 1DoS)

Atratus re-roll: 4 (PASS, 5DoS)

Sabaan, Montesa, Yeng, Ghent, Vorr, Teralil and Atratus are able to shrug off the deleterious effects of the Tyranid's psychic ability. Akkad is reduced to BS and WS10, with associated penalties on Intelligence, Willpower, Fellowship and Perception.

The violent whoosh of Vorr's krak missile underscores the staccato bolt fire, followed by the chitter-shrieks of the tyranids. Greysight does not linger, immediately sweeping the chamber for more threats. In the far distance, another warrior looms out of the darkness, an insectoid silhouette quickly bearing down on Vorr.

Greysight aims and fires, rewarded by another pained shriek as the bolts find their mark, exploding against the creature's head. It lurches sideways, but it somehow lives despite the devastation wrought upon it.
