sml_gallery_62972_10568_1098.jpg Overview

Across the B&C each year there are numerous events focused on painting and Each of these requires a start point. The most common example is the E Tenebrae Lux which dictates that models can be built and undercoated prior to the event begins.

This is where Blood & Zeal comes in. Blood & Zeal is primarily an event which focuses on getting models to the starting criteria for such events. However, it is not an event without motivation and towards this end, the Black Templars have challenged toe Blood Angels to a duel, to see which Faction can prepare the best for the onslaught to come.

The event itself is split into categories based on Battlefield Role. Each week, a category will go live and Frater will, from scratch, build and undercoat any relevant models. Completions will award points based on the PL for that model and the faction with the most points wins that category. The Faction which wins the most categories wins the event.

Who will succeed, the artistic and angelic Blood Angels or the devout and zealous Black Templars?

sml_gallery_62972_10568_1098.jpg Spirit of the Competition

Just like the ETL, there is a set of unwritten rules for self-regulation amongst the Frater. Like any competition on the B&C, they exist to help you all to improve your technique and the standard of your painting and modelling, be it asking and giving advice, and generally improving your modelling regardless of your skill level. Bear in mind that one shouldn’t compromise their skill level during this competition - it’s better to do a smaller vow modelled to the best of your ability than a large sub-par job (according to your own personal standards of which you are the only judge).

A good example of that is basing. The fact that doing bases is not compulsory for a vow in Blood & Zeal is for the benefit of those who do not yet posses the skill of doing proper basing or have yet to decide on what scheme they wish to use. If, however, you do posses the skill and you will not consider the model complete unless you base it then it is expected that you do base it.

In short, this event aims to help you achieve something you can be proud of. Something you can say that Blood & Zeal helped you create and quality over quantity will always be preferred.

In addition to making a start on that infernal backlog, the purpose of Blood & Zeal is also give the opportunity to people to model their minis how they like them, not necessarily according to GW doctrine - it’s all about creativity and imagination. As such, it is possible to see some unorthodox modelling - such as WFB Vampires suitably converted to be Mephiston or Stormcast Eternals as TDA Captains. All these are totally welcome and well in the spirit of the event. However, if people are using the count-as to just paint totally unsuitable models (using an untouched Telion to represent aBlood Angels Scout Sergeant for example) then this works against the principle of Blood & Zeal. After all, Blood & Zeal is all about faction loyalty to that of the Blood Angels or Black Templars, depending on who's side you are.

Finally, Blood & Zeal is also an opportunity to kitbash for your army while having fun interacting and building stronger ties with other Frater within the BA and BT community. There is an element of friendly competition – which is intended and welcome; friendly banter is not only tolerated, but anticipated. That said, this is still intended as light-hearted fun. Please keep that in mind in your exchanges and also that there may be a language barrier or that people can be on a different wavelength. Make sure you use appropriate tone and don’t forget the smileys – they go a long way to give context and remember, B&C rules always take precedence so play nice.

sml_gallery_62972_10568_1098.jpg Rules

Below are the rules which govern Blood & Zeal 2018:

Duration
Two months from February 12th to April 9th, 2018. Each week will have a different category (see below). Participants can join at any time during the lifetime of the event.

Categories
There are seven categories for the event. Only when they are live may you vow and work on the relevant unit(s). The categories and when they are live are shown below:
  • 19th February - HQ units
  • 26th February - Troops units
  • 5th March - Elites units
  • 12th March - Fast Attack units
  • 19th March - Heavy Support units
  • 26th March - Dedicated Transports units
  • 2nd April - Flyers units

Entry requirements

  • Participants must pledge anything relevant to their chosen Faction (Blood Angels or Black Templars) chosen from either; Codex Blood Angels (Blood Angels) or Codex Space Marines (Black Templars), Index: Imperium 1, Index: Forces of the Adeptus Astartes, Relic Sicaran Arcus Strike Tank, Relic Sicaran Omega Tank Destroyer
  • Each choice must be a legal unit as per the relevant Datasheet
  • You may pledge as many of these as you wish. However, each vow must be finished before another one is made and vows cannot be changed prior to completion
  • To enter a category you declare your vow and post an accompanying starting picture in the relevant category stratagem. It is declared complete when you post a completion picture
  • Starting vows require photographic evidence. This should be either a sprue , pile of bits, or a mix of both. There should be no paint/undercoat on any of the units pledged for the event

Re-vowing
If participants have achieved their target before the end of the week they can pledge again for the relevant category. There is no upper limit on vows.

Completions
Once built and primed/undercoated, state your vow is complete and post a completion picture in the relevant category strategem before it comes to a close. Completions will gain points at a 1:1 ratio to Power Levels unless it's deemed to be a conversion (which have their own rules).

Conversions
Conversions are an optional extra for Blood & Zeal. To acknowledge the increased difficult of a conversion/kitbash to a standard build, any conversion considered legal for the event will increase the PL by 25 %, with this increased to 50 % for extensive conversions.

Winning the Competition
Points will get tallied up on the category stratagems and the Faction with the most will win that category. The Faction that wins the most categories will win Blood & Zeal, earning not only bragging rights but a unique signature banner to be worn with pride.

sml_gallery_62972_10568_1098.jpg FAQs

Q: Can I work on my model in advance?
A: Other than unboxing, removing mould release agent, gathering bits, etc, no. As this is a build event, we want the focus to be on the actual build and not the painting side of things. Should you wish to submit an entry that requires stripping, then they will need to be stripped and broken up into components (where possible) in advance. Should you have any queries, please send a PM to Jolemai or Acebaur

Q: Why aren't LoW choices included?
A: This is a design decision that takes into account the time required to build them (many take more than a week and many folk want to take their time here) but also because it would give us an even number of categories which would make finding a winner more difficult. This doesn't mean that LoW choices will be exempt from any subsequent painting events that may arise from Blood & Zeal

Q: Can I base my unit(s)?
A: if it's normal for you to add textures to your bases before you undercoat then go ahead. However, basing isn't mandatory for the competition

Q: Can I paint my tank internals prior to the event?
A: Vehicle (excluding Drop Pods) internals are a special case and are exempt from the rules regarding prior work. You may work on these prior to building but you will need to disclose this on your entry post. Please note that this is entirely optional...

Q: I work in sub-assemblies. Can I submit a model held together by blue-tac?
A: No because this is a build event and things are required to be "built". However, in a lot of cases, things will hold in place without glue (bolters, push-fits) whilst anything else can be held with the tiniest bit of super glue to keep it in place - then just snap it off afterwards (a bit like the WHTV video about spray coating Eldar Jetbikes)

Q: What constitutes a conversion?
A: Anything from a plastic kitbash to a headswap on a metal/resin miniature. Not only does it have to be an obvious change from the original miniature, it should also require some effort on your part; so (for example) adding a purity seal to a metal Scout would not count. On this, Acebaur and Jolemai have the final say

Q: Does it matter what colour I undercoat/prime my miniature?
A: You are to do this how you would normally. For example, I still undercoat my Sanguinary Guard black but many use Retributor Armour spray. Either way is fine as folk paint their stuff differently

Q: I play a Successor Chapter. Can I participate?
A: Successor & homebrew Chapters are more than welcome to join the event and pledge for their relevant Faction

Q: I collect both Blood Angels and Black Templars. Can I pledge to both Factions?
A: No. It's one Faction or the other, not both

The correct use of tags can be found here. Basically, this is a method of making things easier to search to people can gain fast, easy access to your work and that of others. The official RTS tags are:
  • Blood & Zeal
  • Blood & Zeal 2018
  • Blood Angels modelling event
  • Black Templars modelling event

... in addition to all the usual things like Blood Angels WIP, Black Templars WIP, and so on. If we can remember to add these to our work then that would be great.

No doubt there will be a barrage of follow up questions from folk... so to open up -

Do each of the unit types need to be completed *during* their specific week or by end of period?

Specifically, I usually prime with an airbrush in a large batch (sharing kitchen table) and would be easier to undercoat in 1 go than for each week...

Otherwise the building part within each week sounds ok :-)

I second this question, and the reason for asking, before adding one of my own:

Can we start working on HQ models now or does that section start on Feb 19?

Hullo.

I tend to spray primer on my models while still on the sprues, before going any further. Do I take it this invalidates any such models from this event?

In better news however I do have some untouched sprues and models which I might be happy to pledge. Off the top of my head they include a Captain Karlaen (who I want to convert a little) and a Baal Predator. There may be some untouched Veterans kicking around too. At least one box of VV and one of SV if I am right. Possibly also a command squad. This could all work out well...

A couple of questions. If I participate in the challenge, and I don't have a unit/units for a given week/battlefield role, am I still able to participate in the subsequent weeks if I do have units available for a given battlefield role? When I make a vow, can the vow include more than one unit for the week's given battlefield role, or must I make a single vow for a unit, complete the unit and then make new vows for subsequent units? If it is hidden, for example in the ball and socket of a space marine's neck joint, could poster tack be used instead of glue? I must say I am chuffed to be participating in this challenge and wish everyone the best of luck going forward.

You can only work on the models when the relevant stratagem goes live. So HQs can only be worked on between 0000 UTC on the 19th and 0000 UTC on the 26th. Completions are expected to be undercoated, so you will need to do break up your usual routine should you wish to enter.

Anything that has been undercoated prior to being built is not eligible for this event. The photo you submit with your pledge has to be of bare plastic/metal/resin. Only completion photos can show undercoat (see FAQs for details)

All your untouched stuff sounds fine and it sounds like you have a nice amount to spread over the vent :tu:

I intend to make my first attempt at sculpting with my jump librarian conversion. A sculpted psychic hood and cloak/cape. I may try hair, but that idea might be beyond my ability...

Sounds good. Will look forward to seeing it next week. Out of interest, do you think you can do it all in one week?

I'd like to thank Jolemai & Acebaur (and any others responsible) for putting this event together.

This event has come at the best time for me. I will need this week to make plans and get a few supplies.

Thank you!

You're on the wrong team though! :ohmy.:

  • You can pick and chose what stratagem you go for. It doesn't matter if you only attend one, all, just the odd numbers, or whatever combination works. What matters is having a good time and getting your stuff ready for painting (and/or the B&C painting events)
  • A vow can be any number of legal units for that stratagem. The re-vowing rules are there for people to be cautious if they wish or should they find themselves done with a few days to spare. What we don't want is people changing vows before completion
  • Blue-tack is covered in the FAQs. Whilst the video I've mentioned isn't the same scenario, it details holding something with glue and then snapping it off afterwards. It's a similar principle, but the point is as a build event we don't want lumps of blue-tack everywhere.
  • and we look forward to having you involved :)

Do rescues count? I have some OOP metal models I rescued from ebay, They are soaking right now. Not sure how much prep work is needed, have to strip the paint before seeing if flash/mold lines need removal. If they aren't eligible I'm okay with that, just curious, not trying to game the system I purchased these just before the event.

If they aren't, I would like to submit them as OOC.

When submitting them, do you have to add points/PL tally ups?

Example: Captain Thunder Hammer Storm Shield Jump Pack PL6?

  • Get them stripped in advance as they have to be bare metal (and broken down into components) to be entered. After that, work on the cleanup, modifications (if any), gluing, and undercoat when the relevant stratagem goes live. In fact, this initial week is perfect for planning, stripping, spending time with the kids, etc.
  • Each stratagem will have a vow template and you will be asked to provide a PL total for your vow.
  • Yes, Captain Smashypants at PL 6 would net us 6 event points provided you completed it on time.

HQ Stratagem will go live at 2359 UTC on the 19th February and close at 2359 UTC on the 26th February

This week is the calm before the storm. Use it for planning, cleaning up mould release agent, buying, unboxing, stripping, bits gathering, buying glue/magnets/undercoat, and basically anything that doesn't involve you commencing the build.

From the 19th February until the end of the event it's going to a fast pace so get everything ready now.

Thanks Jolemai - all good... might only get the chance to do 1 or 2 of the sections up to undercoat level then, but very keen to at least get my captain & ancient/champion done so it's all good motivation. Thanks for running the events.

Anything you can work on will be greatly appreciated :tu:

Just realized I'm going to be at a conference in Utah :(

The HQs will not be done. :( :( :(

I may be able to get one finished that day.

Hey Ekfud, what size magnets would you use toe space marine wrists and dreadnought heavy flamer/storm bolters, respectively? Cheers, Smash.

Hey - I actually just finished posting some pics/notes for a DC dreadnought build on my blog too (sig linky...).

Some of the other guys can probably comment on what they use for wrists (I tend to do the shoulder/arms for weapon swaps), but generally use a couple of sizes...

3mm diameter, 1mm or 1.5mm thick discs

3mm diameter, 3.5mm tall cylinders

6mm diameter 1.5mm thick

6mm diameter 2.4mm thick

For arm-to-torso (swappable weapon arms), I'll use the small 3mm discs (one on each side of the join)

These are generally plenty for a pistol, combi etc but if you have a really heavy arm (eg, terminator or a large storm shield) you might want to go a bit bigger.

To be fair - even the heaviest arms still hold the torso... but they might droop from where you pose them if the extremity is hefty

For packs (mainly for JP vs regular), I use the small 3mm discs as well (one on pack one on torso) - although I put them above the nubbin

Some people remove the nubbin and stick the magnet where it was - in which case the pack is more likely to 'spin' if you nudge it.

I think I have some recent pics on blog of how I did my DC jump pack magnets. 18 DC with 3x magnets each is where half my packet went...

For bases, I stick a 3mm by 3.5mm cylinder under the base - which keeps them stuck to a tin sheet I have in my mini case

It's completely over the top, but I haven't had to use a single piece of packing foam for transport since going that way

For dreadnoughts (have only built the one so far) I have done arms-torso, claws-arms and then the under-arm weapons

The arm joint is a couple of the 3.5mm cylinders in the torso and a metal washer on the arm. These are really quite sturdy.

I also stuck a big 6mm magnet inside the end of the arms and a washer on the claws so I can swap them with blood talons.

The under arm weapons only have a 3mm by 1.5mm disc (on the arm as well as the weapon) - as long as they make direct contact it seems to be plenty

Pics of the dreadnought build on blog...

For tanks - I also added some anchor points during construction...

Just behind the headlights on the top panel (each side of the driver roof) I superglue a 6mm on the *underside* before sealing the tank up.

The big magnet is completely hidden - a tiny 3mm on a smoke launcher, etc will get enough pull from the 6mm one through the plastic

I've done some swappable smoke launchers, search light, missile launcher, comms radar bits that can go on any of the tanks.

So, ah - yeah I think I have a problem...

I paint minis so slowly that I *always* want options I can swap rather than having to build full models :-)

Thanks for the reply Ekfud, do you have a Linky for your blog, I use the mobile and IOS versions if the site on both my phone and IPod respectively and neither version of the site shows sigs. Cheers, Smash

Sure - https://daemonbanes.blogspot.com.au/

Jolemai - shout if posting external link is frowned upon....
