ETL Motivation & Planning Thread

I have to tell you that I was in two minds about including the AoD in the ETL this year

The standard Tactical Marine for example costs 10pts in HH and 13pts in 40k - that’s a 30% disadvantage right there.

I've put some thought into this myself. I believe in years past there's been discrepancies in Tactical Marines' cost between Codices for 40k, i.e. at the start of 7th the new Marine codex comes out with points changes, but the BA, DA and SW are all using still using points from their 6th edition books, etc. I personally don't think it's the end of the world particularly. I like being the underdog, because it gives me motivation, and also an excuse when it doesn't go to plan! :biggrin.:

In any case, there's another option if we want to vow strategically to give ourselves the most points possible -

10 x Tactical Marines - 125 points = 12.5 points per model. Extra marines above the initial 10 are costed at 10 ppm.

5 x Veteran Marines - 100 points = 20 points per model. Extra marines above the initial 5 are costed at 12 ppm.

The plastic Mk III and Mk IV kits are probably the most widely used 'Tactical Marine' model, and both of those were described as being Veteran Tactical squads in the BaC and BoP box sets when they were released. So if we really wanted to be strategic/cheeky and play to our own advantage, instead of vowing a 10 man Tactical squad and getting 125 points for it, we can instead take the same miniatures and vow 2 x Veteran Tactical squads and get close to double that at 200 points. It's not particularly sportsman-like, I don't think, and Captain Semper may choose to disallow it (which would be entirely fair), but it's an option we have if it's looking dicey.

So, if it turns out that due to systems’ incompatibility the AoD is penalised to the point that they cannot challenge the 40k factions (or more like to the point that it's no fun for the AoD crowd), I might consider upgrading the “Loyalty & Treachery” event to become more like a ETL-HH edition! Maybe a winter event to counterbalance the ETL summer event?

I do love Loyalty and Treachery. I think it was the first L&T that got me to stop lurking and get involved with the community, and it's heaps of fun. That said though, it would be an enormous shame to miss out on the ETL, as a board-wide event, because of a technicality like points. I don't think any of us mind the slight disadvantage because there will be balances that go more in our favour, like the Mechanicum mentioned above. Basic Thallax squads are 135 points for three models, making them worth 45 points each (more than a Rhino!), with special weapons on top of that.

But for the time being, the AoD will have their chance to stand and fight against their 40k rivals and see where it gets us. :smile.:

Excellent! If you need to find us, we'll be on the front lines, covered in the paint of our miniatures and the blood of our foes!

Ok, just to be clear:

The AoD will participate in The ETL and their units will be priced according to the red books point values. No adjustment or modification will take place whatsoever.

Furthermore, although some point optimising is bound to occur, overdoing it clashes with the spirit of the ETL. Please refer to ETL V “spirit of the ETL” section for clarification.

Oh and there will be some surprises too... ;)

This would be a world of more work, but maybe split the AoD between loyalists and traitors?

Wouldn't that basically put us out of competition? Also if we want to compete against each other there already is loyalty&treachery.

Not really...right now this single subforum has a combined 20+ armies all contributing to a single team.

The only way it can lose is inactivity and a poor showing by the Chaos subforums (another combined group, but a much smaller one)

2 years ago i would have agreed, now not so sure. While i'm not that aware of the numbers on the AoD subforum, does the AoD subforum still have the massive base now that 8th edition has come? It was my impression that quite a few people became more active in 40k again with the release of 8th edition. If that is not the case i can see the desire to split up the AoD Section in traitor/loyalist. But, if i'm right, and the numbers have dwindled somewhat, than i feel it might not be needed.

Well to be fair aod has 18 legions. Militia auxilia mechanicum

Compare that to SW, DA & BA who have 1 army to work from.

Could take the chaos subforum and split it. T-Son, D- Guard. Then the rest?

Will xenos be 1 faction or will each race be separate?

The slow down has more to do with folks going to their xenos projects I think.

^^ This.

There's been much less traffic in the AoD, and much less interest generally, in the HH since 8th dropped. I'd be surprised if we get anything like the numbers we had in years past. Still gonna do my darnedest though.

Besides, Captain Semper knows what he's doing. It'll all work out in the wash.

I'm in! While I've picked up my painting pace significantly, I'm still no speed demon/daemon. The day the Cap'n announced the return of ETL I quit painting and started prepping units up to primed status.

I do have one question to which I can't remember the answer. Can I slide in some of the Ordo Reductor or Solar Auxilia from my siege force? There are times when I get quite frustrated trying to blend yellow. I'd rather be able to move on to something else than have to put my paintbrush down and walk away for a while.

All will be revealed very soon. Generally speaking though, there will be flaxibility... ;)

Depending on how it’s structured, i’ll at least be pledging Crysos Morturgs infantry section, minus Crysos himself as alas I literally finished him the day before the announcement of ETL. However if I can pledge for multi-legions or loyalists and traitors I can pump out some stuff I want for my other legions!

I look forward to you Horus Heresy lot challenging us this year! Alas, my Death Guard who I had originally planned for 30k will be done up as 40k Death Guard this year... mostly because as an Australian it is somewhat easy to find battles for 40k, and I want to be true to my plans
