ETL Motivation & Planning Thread

I'm looking to put together a small Dark Mechanicus force, which will coincide quite neatly with this event :happy.: A lot of counts-as and conversion work though (it is Dark Mech after all), which hopefully won't be an issue. Seems like AoD might suffer activity wise now, what with 8th edition, but I'll try and do my part. I do have two boxes of Betrayal at Calth that I should probably get out of storage too...

Edit: oh, in terms of what I might like to get done:

Magos

Secutarii x20

Thallax x6

Maybe some Myrmidons and an Axiarch to round things off to around 1500 points

Then

Mk IV Marines x60

Terminators x10

Contemptor x2

RT Dreadnought

Land Raider Proteus x2

Rhino x2

Predator

I may just do the vehicles and some support squads though; I'm waiting for the next 40k Khorne release so I can plunder some bits to convert the bulk of my B@C infantry.

I think our greatest strength is that we aren’t bound to a single legion, or just mech or Auxilia. Hopefully this is still the case so I can pump out primarchs and characters (of which I have a lot of unpainted) The only primarch I’ve got who doesn’t need a repaint due to me being unhappy with them is ferrus, so I can do a few of them to get points up! Also means I can vow all the bits and bobs for all my various legion/mech/aux forces I have kicking around doing not much due to lack of motivation!

I really really want to take part this year and paint up some models for my 30k Exped fleet, but I lack a gaming group and motivation since I failed both ETL 1 and 3 (I think it was 3, I failed 2 out of 2).

All the more reason to redeem yourself! :)

Seriously, give it a go. A small manageable vow for starters will do wonders for your morale! :tu:

That's..... a fair point, I'll get round to stripping some of my models because I've changed my paint scheme since then and give it a go I guess.

I haven't worked out my colour scheme yet, so my first vow is likely to be just three Tallax so that I can play around with and work out what I want to do.

I am hoping to paint all my Thallax (15 currently built, 3 more on their way) during the event. If I get all that done then the 9 Ursarax would be the next goal. If I really surpirse myself and finish all that then it is on to the rest of the Mechanicum stuff that is built; Thanatar, 3 Vorax, Domitar, 7 Castellax (2 only part built as of tonight), 1 converted Medusa (with 2 more planned) and a converted Macrocarid Explorator if I finish it in time.

I also have several Magos and Archmagos conversions planned and I may end up painting some just for a break from the cyborgs and robots.

First vow will probably be a 10 man breacher squad, and maybe a HQ character. If I get it done with enough spare time, I might make a second vow with 5 terminators, 1-2 land speeders, and maybe another HQ. I am certainly not a fast painter, so I prefer to make maneageable vows, specially knowing we can make up to 5 vows and I don't see myself doing all of them, so I can start with two small ones, and if I see myself motivated enough (and with spare time), I shall make more ambitious ones.
Depends on what limitations we have. If it’s singular legion or traitors/loyalists only my first will be 2 10 man tac squads, 2 5 man tac support squads, a mortis dread and an apothecary for death guard. if not, a bunch of characters I have lying around and a primarch or two

Here's where I'm at...

Having stripped ALL of my Imperial Fists down to bare grey, I'm now going through the long and arduous process of building bases to match Dorn's display base. It's taken me about four evenings across the last week to get this far, and I hate it and want it to stop. I'm bad at craft-type things, so it's taking far, far longer than I want it to.

In terms of the first vow, I'm torn. I've got a few vehicles that I could pledge that would be worth a good amount of points and that I could probably knock out pretty quickly. That would contribute to a good early score, but equally, I have so many infantry that I actually need to paint that I'd potentially rather save the vehicles as incentive to get other stuff done.

In any case, the bases above are for 2 x 10 Breachers, 2 x 5 Seekers and at least one Terminator, so that may well end up informing my first vow, depending on what new tricks Captain Semper has for us this year.

@Nova - I've got a picture of the Knights from the FW store at Warhammer World somewhere which I'll dig out for you. They're all in really interesting poses, so it might provide some inspiration!

Also, I've had the all clear from Captain Semper for these, so here's a little more of my stuff for the coming months -

A Deimos Damocles, 3 x Deimos Rhinos, 2 x Deimos Laser Vindicators and a Mk IIB Land Raider, all good to go.

In case you're wondering, they've only had a coat or two of colour over black primer (white for the Land Raider), but this is probably as painted as they're allowed to be before the event starts. I'd done these early last month and parked them as soon as I heard ETL was back on in the hope that I hadn't gone too far with them. Anything more than this would be an unfair advantage.

So if you've got anything with a little bit of paint on it and you're not sure if you can use it, PM a pic to Captain Semper and check if it's ok. Worst thing that could happen is he says no.

@StruMan awesome would really appreciate it! On a side not last night after the bits went into a bath I found a old land raider that looks like it's seen much better days and thought to myself "well this is great for a scenic base."

I may be going just a bit mad

Hey, Slips! I was browsing through ETL threads from ages past and stumbled across this -

I will literally be Saving Dorn for ETL if he's released in the Interim. And, depending on Finances, Maybe even a Stormbird and/or Mastodon :p

...Possibly a Glaive too.

Funny how things work out, isn't it? ;)

So I need some help to decide how to equip my Magos before I can finalise the conversion plans.

The two options I am considering are:

Archmagos Prime Malagra

Cyber-familiar, Jet Pack, Abeyant, Master Crafted Paragon blade, Power fist, Phased Plasma-Fusil

or

Archmagos Prime Malagra

Cyber-familiar, Jet Pack, Abeyant, Djin-skein, Paragon blade, Power fist

The army he would lead consists of Thallax and Ursarax, namely all the ones I have and hope to get through during the event. The list will roughly be

3 Thallax, 1 Irad-Clenser

3 Thallax, 1 Multi-melta

3 Thallax, 1 Photon Thrusters

6 Thallax, 2 Phased Plasma-Fusil

9 Ursarax, 3 with Power Fists

He would join the 6 Thallax unit and either leave the when needed or charge with them if really needed. The first option provides more direct firepower while the latter allows more flexibility.

I’m in.

I’ve got a Deimos Pattern Rhino and a Demios Pattern Vindicator assembled and undercoated, I was going to wait for Alpha Legion Doors for the Rhino before painting but I can paint what I have and just blutac the doors for now.

I’ve also got a 5 man MkIII support squad ready to go and hope to pick up an Alpharius at Warhammer Fest.

I’m going to keep my vows small as I have a lot going on this summer and want to make sure I complete everything rather than vow big and fall short.

Cheers
