ETL Motivation & Planning Thread

Looking great Trokair!! That's going to be such an impressive army when it's all painted up! I'm slightly worried now about this loyalist/traitor split

I only have 3 models built so far :blush.: But I'm using the ETL more as an excuse to build my army from scratch, rather than paint up what I've got lying around, so I'll probably be purchasing new things and doing my building as I go along.

Thanks Qkhitai

Good luck with your building, I have always liked Juggers so am looking forward to your count as Thallax. Are you going to mount their guns on the back or in their mouth Forgefiend style?

Actually what about having the Juggers be an Ursarax count as conversion due to the increased movement of Ursarax.

Now all I need to do in the next two days is work out a colour scheme.

It is actually quite tough to find a decent unit to proxy them as, and I'm not 100% convinced about Thallax either. I only chose Thallax because they filled up some compulsory troop slots for me, and the points are the same as the old 7th edition Bloodcrushers. But the fact they don't have - and I wasn't planning to add - jetpacks or lightning guns means rules-wise they're not a fantastic substitute. But the more I think about all the models I'm planning to make, the more restrictive the current Mechanicum army list feels, and the reasons why X could count as Y are getting quite flimsy. I have some stuff on my work bench and I have no idea what they could be rules or vow wise. Really feeling the absence of a dedicated Dark Mech list :sad.: Not enough any crazy daemon engines in the AoD yet!

But I guess what I decide to run them all as in-game (not that I really play) need not be what is most appropriate to vow them as for ETL. So I'm totally open to suggestions and guidance on that from everyone going forward - and happy to take any points handicaps if need be. It's just nice to be involved and to be able to contribute what I can :happy.:

And you haven't settled on a colour scheme or forge world yet? :ohmy.: Leaving that quite late!

What about Juggers as Vorax.

The Irad-cleanser is a fleshbane flamer weapon and I can easily the Juggers mouth exhaling wrap flame stuff that is a count as Irad. For the two rotor cannons maybe have those mounted on the back with some Darkmech servitor riding the Juggers and controlling them. Vorax can also take poisoned ammo on their rotor cannons which would fit a demonic theme quote well.

Quick mock-up using some spare assault cannon from a DA landspeeder and a Jugger I have. One of my Vorax standing next to it for size comparison.

I have a vague idea of what I want to do and I am going to test it on the first Thallax. If it does not work I should have plenty of time to change it and buy new paints if needed.

I am always here if you need to bounce any ideas.

How about you let me know what models you are planning to convert/ want to work with and I have a think as to how to apply them to AoD Mech. Most of my armies are converted and use non standard models as starting points for the units I use them as. Sylvaneth Tree based Tyranids, 40k Dwarf based Mecanicus, 40k Khorne Demon Lizards to name a few examples.

Edit: Sorry this ended up as a double post instead of editing the first one, not sure how I did that, could one of the mods kindly fix this for me.

Thanks for the suggestions and the offer to help!! :happy.:

I think part of the issue for me is the problem of 'converting into the list', which I'm not all too willing to do, for two reasons:

1) Whilst the current Mechanicus list is adequate for Dark Mechanicus, a dedicated Dark Mech list is confirmed and on the horizon, so I don't want to convert models so that they can work in what is essentially just a stop-gap list. When the Dark Mech list comes out, I don't want to have a bunch of models converted in the 'wrong' way, especially when what I want to model now might work better in the dedicated list.

2) I also don't want to convert my models just to be ETL-valid, as I think that's not only a bit silly, but also against the spirit of the competition. As much as I want to help and be involved in this event, at the end of the day I'd like to paint what I want to paint, and not have to change that just to win some more points. I'd rather not vow at all if that were the case.

So in the case of the Juggernauts in particular, I'm a bit stubborn and I don't really want to convert them at all. Although that being said, I'm surprised how good your counts-as Vorax mock up looks! It's actually a really good size for a Vorax. However, I'd like them to be much more a fast-moving assault unit, as opposed to a kind of gun platform. So maybe Ursarax would actually be better, as you originally proposed? With the lightning claws representing their melee attacks and the volkite counting as a kind of warp breath? After looking over the options, I think that might be the most appropriate thing to vow them as.

Aside from those, the bulk of what I hope to pledge is quite friendly - a Magos, Secutarii Peltasts, Axiarch and Tech-Priest Auxillia; even though they are converted they'll be pretty faithfully WYSIWYG, so I'm not worried about them. Moving on from there though is where things might get difficult again. I'm working on a unit of secutarii cavalry on demonic steeds, and I don't think there is an appropriate unit for them at all. The best I can think of is just having them as regular secutarii infantry (which means I would have to buy 5 more, but que sera sera). And another idea I'm toying with is picking up a Chaos Decimator as a potential Thanatar counts-as, as well as mashing up that Khorgorath and some Chaos Spawn with Kataphron weapons to make Myrmidon Destructors.

Fair enough, and I hope you don’t have to wait too long and that no schedule slip arises. Personally still waiting for Fires of Cyraxus.

Jugger Ursarax should work, and as yours are on the new slimmer oval bases the size discrepancy is less.

For the cavalry, which demonic stead are you planning on using, if it is large enough maybe a Legion Outrider unit could work.

If nothing works you can always collect all the custom units into a Out Of Competition vow.

I don’t know how big a Decimator is, but a Thanatar is really big, a Domitar might be a better count as from size perspective.

For the Myrmidons, some hellbrute parts might also help in fitting out the Khorgorath. I have never seen a Khorgorath in the flesh so I am not sure how big they are but they might make a decent Castellax count as. Castellax are surprisingly small.

This will be my first ETL, but I've got a few things ready for it.

1. Roboute Guilliman

2. Captain Remus Ventanus

3. 1 Outrider Squad

4-5. Tac squads, I guess? I'm not really sure from here. Maybe a dreadnought or a rhino.

Essentially I'm using this ETL to get my 3k Ultras list jumpstarted. Helping the cause is just icing on the cake.

Welcome, Joe! So glad to have you on board!
