Commissars are back! Guard and the big FAQ

How you you think the FAQ effects us?

I like the Commissar change. Bringing one for 15 points of even a Lord Commissar for 30 looks pretty good. It's not quite what I was hoping for but acceptable.

Do Catachan Leman Russes only re-roll one of the two dice for their main gun using Grinding Advance now? That is quite a nerf.

The Command Points change is getting ridiculous. I already don't know how to spend 20+ points.

I'm very happy about the Commissar changes, I mean I would have liked the original rules, but at least now its not detrimental!

A 50% price drop on each is great for me! I've still been using LC's :)

The other nerf is Cadians losing their Twin Link ability for just +1 to hit instead which is still pretty good!

I wish they'd clarified orders though, ie do you have to take them immediately and if you're stacking orders does that mean they get to shoot twice if the orders relate to re-roll hits / wounds.

I'm surprised Bullgryns didn't get an interim points increase, not complaining though :)

Commissars 'fix' is great news, especially coupled with the Lord discount. Because the rule of 3 now limits the number of Company Commanders we can take. Lord Commies are now a viable and punchy alternative. I still think it would have made much more sense to bring back a decent version of Summary execution, but ah well...

Brigades at +12 CP, ok. But who needs them now that alpha deepstriking is not a thing anymore? I don't see why we should be interested in Sentinels/Ratlings anymore. On the other hands, Battalions at +5 CP are awesome - even more awesome now for AM.

Overall, I am a bit puzzled. Not bad certainly, but they seem to have avoided addressing some major balance issues. The number of stuff we have to print and compare to play is becoming the size of a late-7th-ed situation.

Note: they have not addressed the question: do units embarked on a Tallarn transport which outflanks count towards the 3-unit limit of the stratagem? Or, at least, I have not found it...

EDIT: duz_, where is the Cadian fix?

Wish they fixed their summary execution

Krash

They did. It is now optional. So you only re-roll when it is beneficial to do so. You don't have to re-roll at all. Just get Lord Commissar for 30 points giving you a nice leadership 9 bubble.

Nah, they did not. As expected. Too complex to fix that mechanic, it would require rewriting whole sections of the codex(es). Not going to happen, the damage is done already.

But at least they partially fixed Ynnari: the PfP psichic power went from 6+ to 8+ to cast, and - if I understand it correctly - Craftworld attributes do not stack anymore with Ynnari's Strength from Death.

So no more double-firing -1 hit (base) Dark Reapers*, at least. Either one or the other. Or am I wrong?

*which got a small pts increase, btw. Still not enough methinks.

Commissars back in a huge huge way! Not only are they cheap as chips, Summary Execution is now optional!

I am conflicted now, though. I was going to use them as Platoon Officers, since the new rule of 3 limits me to 3 company commanders, but 6 orders may be enough.

So happy it is a 'may' now!. They will be great 16 point babysitters for HWT that will now never run and can sit on objectives, just many uses, 48 points for 3 elites, boom!

Don't they have to pay for a power weapon?  I didn't think they could take a chainsword.

Yes I believe they come with a powersword + bolt pistol base and you can't switch it for a chainsword unfortunately :(

Either way thats 20pts for one Commissar

What do you mean with the Cadians nerf?

I dont understand it

I don't get the Cadian nerf either. I can only see they reworded the stratagem.

Commissars do not *have* to take a power sword, only a bolt pistol. So it's 16 pts. Only Lords have to take a power sword, so they are now 35 pts base.

Commissars *can* take a chainsword if you follow the weird index flowchart thing, I think. Just do add entropy to an already chaotic state of the art.

Thoughts:

CP increase means 3 battalion list base as opposed to brigade + 'something' much more viable. So 150pts ish fast attack requirement perhaps not needed.

Also much more viable to take 3 relics (1 base + 3CP for another 2)

Creed for orders much more attractive for Cadian

Fluff bunnies like me much easier to fit in both commissar variants.

HWT prob still going to be mortars for me.

Platoon commander more useful for orders.

Overall impact on other armies more negative, so guard relatively better off

This seems like a very poorly worded FAQ question.

Personally I think that they still get to re-roll both of the dice. The question (emphasis mine) says "How many dice does the Brutal Strength Regimental Doctrine allow me to re-roll when a VEHICLE in my army fires a ranged weapon that makes a random number of attacks?". Since the rules of Grinding Advance allow you to "shoot it's turret weapon twice", I would say that this isn't covered by the exact wording of the question. HOWEVER I can see that the intent of this may have been to nerf catachan grinding advance.

---------------------

Rule of 3 is going to be a bit crap for people who liked HWTs, it's now much harder to make a decent fluffy infantry company since a lot of people used those to flesh out there lists. Obviously embedding HWTs in infantry squads is definitely going to be the way forwards.

Scions and Elysians are pretty heavily nerfed now with the deep strike changes, although if you were just taking a couple of squads of either to deepstrike onto objectives then you will can still do that turn two

It's pretty good.

Commissars have a place in an army now and got point decrease - that's way more than I thought we would get after fail approved!

0-3 of each dataslate is a bit vexing in light of only one this, for me, Leman Russ.

Often, if I field them, I find myself wanting to field 4-5. Oh well. Glad I own 10. Some can be tank commanders

I would argue that taking 3 leman russes in one slot counts also as one dataslate.

Nah, I don't think that was the intent. I think it was just meant to clarify e.g. a Catachan Baneblade cannon firing 3d6 can only reroll one of those d6 (which was pretty obvious already, but players). I definitely agree that, FAQ-as-written, it does nothing to change Catachan grinding advance because it's the same weapon firing twice and separately.

Other points in the FAQ seem to address very obvious doubts, by just rewording e.g. some stratagems for better clarity. The Cadian relic was also very cleary a one-use-only thing, glad they finally wrote this clearly. Anyway.
