Sons of Horus 65th Company

Heyas there. Welp, I guess I might as well put up a bit of a Legion project that I did up in a few weeks. Got a bit antsy, and because it's my first time around here, I figured I might as well throw together a bit of a pict wall, right? Anyway, 2 weeks shy of ECL, aaaaand while I'd love to add some more, I can't say how long it'll take to get my Proteus, Dreadclaw Breachers, or Rapiers in. So, for now, the Sons of Horus 65th Company.

You might notice a lot of 'havoc support squads', well, I do tend to like to build separate units so I can swap weapons into 10+ marine squads whenever I want, but still get to play around with some big bolter squads, too. Ugh, metallic shiny lenses never show up well in pictures.

Aaaaand finally, what do you get when some mates at a game store drop a forgeworld model down a flight of stairs after having butchered the cleaning process?

.... well I'm not quite sure what you get, but I got a pretty banged up Horus as long as I painted him for their display thing!

I'll buy another and replace him when I'm finished with the rest of the company.

Thanks Robofish, I rather like the minty green look myself. Again, getting a consistent Sons of Horus colour plate from anywhere is pretty crazy, and the FW colour guide for them is unnervingly complex compared to the others.

And thanks too Spikedhalo. Hah, I wish my freehand game was that good, (it's always been pretty trashy) but I guess I ain't too bad at transfers, eh?

Well, newest addition is ye olde Death March, a Proteus Raider (A raider in a day, from resin bits to complete... or near complete, I'm sure I'll find some touch ups as I go).

Thanks a ton, mates. I figured this was a good way to least to not feel like a bit of a forum leech eh?

The Sons of Horus have been a bit odd for me, usually I try a little more colour and vibrancy in 40K but I've been trying more of the 'military modeling' thing with more powders and such. So it's all new to me.

Aye, Burias-drak'shal, the bases are... interesting. I originally paired these bases with my Blood Angels who have the 'Imperial Palace' marble vibe, and figured that this more subdued and grungy theme might fit with a smashed up low-town Terra vibe (I hadn't even really realized it could work as Istvaan III at the time). So I'm hoping it meshed with the less saturated Horisian green.

Thanks Hushrong, that Proteus was a bit of an oddity but man has it grown on me. It definitely looks the part of 'old' so gotta really give it to the FW team for making that design work again. As for the Tartaros, they are synched with mk. IV armour machine spirits, were they not? So there might be some cause for it... doesn't help that I'm using mk.III plate, but with something as short ranged as melta, I figured you'd want all the protection you could get.

Well, mates, FW's little clear out prompted me to nab at least another upgrade set so I'll be getting some more pseudo-Reavers up and Seekers whenever customs deigns to let me have it (sometimes there's a month wait in port).  But I figured I should ask ya' lot: what is a centerpiece model for a Sons of Horus army? Because I can't muddle through the capstone. Maybe a Mastadon? Given how prevalent they are in the first three books, I'd consider a Stormbird if I thought I could figure out a way to build a stand, the Thunderhawk was hard enough. Or is infantry and a squadron of maybe 3 raiders and a Spartan enough at the company scale?

Anything that has to use a clock as a base is probably excessive....

A Spartan with three land raiders sounds awesome enough. If you really want to get a big chunk of resin I'd throw in my vote for something like a glaive or one of the other super heavy tanks. Just imagine that thing leading a column of land raiders into battle.

Eh, thanks again mates. Got a little bit more done when I got bored and a mate wanted to split a Battle of Calth/Prospero set. So I'm keeping a few bits and bobs in reserve for my FW torsos and the like to show up, but I also mostly finished up another big legion squad. I just kinda need to make a banner but I'm kinda stuck with blood angel ones. So, we'll see how that works.

Kinda wish I'd have put these up for the ETL, maybe I should pledge a few things: Breachers, Dreadclaw, pair of Raiders, rest of the Seekers and Catulan... though that's at the whims of customs letting 'em in.

I'll admit, Hushrong, I'm a big fan of the Glaive (not so much the Fellblade, dual turreted cannons never quite clicked with me, but a beam cannon, now...), so having that as a column lead for a heavy armour group is pretty good.

Aye Chaplain Dosjetska, I can do just that! I'll toss it below for ya! It's a bit long.

And thanks Charlo, I do appreciate it! I rather like the older look, and I keep thinking of going real old style with a vet squad done up in greys (a la Visions of Heresy and some of the early 30K book art).

Alright, my little ol' Sons of Horus colour guide:

Priming:

  • Black, zenithal white (to get the height mapping going on).

“Green Colour”

  • Shade Colour: Army Painter Wizard Orb (really you could just thin it down and paint it in the base colour recesses)

  • Base Colour: Vallejo Light Green Blue (big time SoH colour for me).

  • Highlight Colour: Vallejo Pale Grey Blue (frig, after this and the light green blue and a half dozen other similar colours, I wanna go back to Citadel's names).

  • Wash: a 'proprietary' mix, and by that, you just want a thin surface broken green/black ink. Gloss coat if you want, it helps. (The actual mix is 5 parts water/1 parts gloss varnish/ 1 part flow aid/ 1 part minitaire oil discharge (glossy nuln oil is good)/ 1 part P3 armour wash/ 1 part P3 green ink.)

“Metal”

  • Base colour: Vallejo Metal Gunmetal Grey (Loving the metal line from Vallejo)

  • Shade: P3 Armour wash (It's thin, that's all that matters, it could be anything)

  • Highlight: Vallejo Metal Chrome using a stippling brush (after a matte varnishing on the model)

Do your transfers, and then the big one, filters/weathering.

“Weathering/Filters”

  • Primary: sponge on some umber oil paint, then a small bit of ochre.  Streak it with a brush wetted with white spirits ( or water if you're using water soluable oils which are alright, too).

  • Secondary: sponge on some more umber selectively for the dappled stippling thing.

  • Optional: I have a pot of old citadel chestnut ink that I thin right down to make a little bit of extra streaking.

Use any weathering powders you want (Secret Weapon red brick is pretty nice), then seal it up with a matte varnish. Don't forget to go back over the metals or stippled areas with chrome metallics after, if ya so desire.

That's pretty much it.  Taking the 65th out for a spin against some Emperor's Children and World Eaters tomorrow so I'll see if I can snap a picture or two of what they actually look like table-side.

These all look great. As others have said I’m emjoying the pale green colour scheme you’ve gone for. Really shows the weathering up well. Really great work.

A really old style visions of Heresy would be nice to see too. Have you seen EdT’s Visions of Heresy Sons of Horus diorama he’s making in the WIP section?

I can't say I have seen that'n, Krakendoomcool, mate.  I'll definitely have a gander over there real quick.

-wanders off to find it and smirks-

Yeeeesss, now that's what I'm talking about!  Same art piece, or one or two that I was staring at and wondering how to make 'pop' as is.  Thanks a ton and a half, mate!  Definitely gonna be following along with that'n as it's exactly what I was feeling.  Now, if only I had some sculpting talent.

Wow! Your stuff is great, I really like the individual poses you create. the Reavers look like the Resin ones from the poses but then I realised they are Calth marines, reposed!

I am going to be starting a SoH army later on this year, I've just stocked up on the upgrade kits from FW before they sold out.

It sounded just like what you were describing so thought you might be into it.

While on the subject there is a guy Kizzdougs in the WIP section too. He does World Class sons of horus. Check him out.

I'll definitely take it as a compliment, Marcus! The resins have always looked terrific, and man, those FW upgrade kits were great. I only just started to get into the buy-ins lately after how good the World Eaters and Sons of Horus sets looked. Can't believe they're gone now.  They really spice up the Calth/Prospero plastics. Can't wait to see more 16th legion around!

Oh aye, Krakendoomcool, I might have seen something like that around there -tries to play it cool-

Hah, seriously, Kizzdougs, your Sons of Horus are frigging inspirational! And yeah, I'm positive that I subscribed. It's awesome to see.

The EdT recommendation was really because it was so close to what you were saying about the visions of heresy. Then Kizzdougs turns up and I felt a little sheepish that i hadn't mentioned his stuff too. It turned into a bit of a 'hey you might like this'.

Back to your stuff. Your really plowing your own furrow. The light green makes yours stand out. They're fantastic.

Your horus is immense. The detail and lighting you have achieved on his face is something else. I also can't stop looking at the base. Is it my imagination or is there a pale blue shine reflected under the chin of the fallen eagle statue? It really sells the whole thing as a really realistic representation. You've done the Warmaster proud there.
