Let's talk T'au Kill Team

I started building my T'au Kill Team stuff yesterday. The Stealth suits were more irritating to build than expected. So far I've got:

Stealth Shas'vre (Leader) with burst cannon, markerlight and target lock

Stealth Shas'ui (Heavy) with burst cannon

Fire Warrior Shas'ui (Comms) with pulse rifle and pulse pistol

Fire Warrior Shas'la (Sniper) with pulse rifle and pulse pistol

Fire Warrior Shas'la with pulse rifle, pulse pistol, and DS-8 Tactical Support Turret with Smart Missile System

MV7 Marker Drone

I've built a third Stealth suit with a fusion blaster and I've put together the two drones in the Fire Warrior box so that they're modular (head already built the Stealth suit box marker drone before I thought of that).

I think it's a bit early to call something "the best" but there are a few things that look promising:

 - Rail rifle Sniper specialist

 - Burst Cannon Heavy specialist (for the suppressor trait and double shooting tactic)

 - Comms specialist

 - Fire Warrior Shas'ui with DS8 turret

Oh and a Recon Drone as well of course. A Grav-Inhibitor Drone could be strong too depending on the terrain and the team you're facing.

That's pretty much what I was thinking, thanks mate.

I don't know what any of this stuff is but I'll check it out when my KT box gets here.

One of the stealth suits I grabbed appears to have some sort of flamer weapon. Is that not a good option? Can the stealth suits fly? If they can I was thinking would be nice to fly out of combat and then flamer any attackers.

Thanks for the feedback.

The Stealth Suit's other weapon is a fusion gun. On the good side it does more than 1 damage with a high Str. The downside is the 12" range particularly with the long range modifier.

Something that might be fun to try is gun drones with pulse accelerator drone. 24" range, 4 shots per model, something will hit eventually. Also, pulse rifle fire warriors mostly hit on 6s too (long range, obscured), having 4 dice instead of one might help. Also, savior protocols for the rail rifle dudes, only way to ever protect the specialists.

Also, always take a DS8. Key units can't be protected by the Character keyword, but blocking LoS with single infantry models is easily done. Again, 4 dice, some might even hit.

So far I am debating on:

Leader: Stealth Suit Shas'vre

Veteran: Breacher Shas'ui
Sniper: Fire Warrior Shas'ui
Heavy: Stealth Suit Shas'ui

Non-specialist: Breacher Shas'la
Non-specialist: Breacher Shas'la
Non-specialist: Fire Warrior Shas'la
Non-specialist: Fire Warrior Shas'la
Non-specialist: Fire Warrior Shas'la

The Leader and Heavy will advance/hit when required
the Veteran will advance with the 2 Breachers in tow
the Sniper and 3 Fire Warriors will act as long range support, fire at targets of opportunity.

So far I've assembled nothing.

Fusion *Blaster have 18" range. While our Plasma isn't better than human Plasma anymore our basic Melta are still superior. ;)

I'm honestly not convinced by the Medic tree. Sniper, Heavy and Comms it is for me.

I had a medic breacher last night who stim injecting my Shas'Vre stealth for 4 attacks.  That guy was pwning Kabalites.  I realize that's pretty niche/anecdotal, but it was the best combo I found to build a "close combat" (lol) Tau in Kill Team. And you *are* eventually going to get into combat.

To be fair, I don't think he got any kills through in close combat. Maybe 1? Most of his work was done by Burst Cannon. But it gave me options and it gave my opponent a close combat threat (T4, 2 wounds, 3+, -1 to be hit) that he couldn't ignore).

I like the sniper, but I don't have any pathfinders yet, so I think it's wasted until you get a rail or ion. But I did well last night with Heavy on my Stealth Shas'ui, Medic on a Breacher Shas'la, Leader on a Fire Warrior Shas'ui and Comms on a Fire warrior Shas'la.

Also, my injury rolls were ridiculously good. I think I only did 1 flesh wound and kill 6 or 7 models on the first shot.

@Panzer- oh wow, that's one of those changes that slipped by me. I'm so used to them being at 12".

Edit: Ah, changed after 4th. 4th was the last time I actually played Tau so I'm not surprised I missed it being changed in the next edition. They should just make the Plasma Rifle Assault 2 and adjust points as needed, but that has no bearing on KT.

So I played a 4 player game this last weekend; Me (Tau), Genestealer Cult, Tyrranid and Guard player.

The mission was Recover Intelligence and we played on a 24" x 36" board.

We skipped the Scouting Phase and Advanced Rules since 3 of the 4 players had never played before, and it was my 3rd game.

I won handily without losing a single model.

My list was:

Fire Warrior Shas'La (Leader)

DS8

Pathfinder with Carbine (Comms)

3 Pathfinders with Carbines

Pathfinder gunner with Ion Rifle (Sniper)

Pathfinder gunner with Rail Rifle

Stealth Shas'vre with Burst Cannon (Heavy)

Pulse Accelerator Drone

Grav Drone

Recon Drone with Burst Cannon

Congrats, very cool. I'm interested in knowing why you made the Ion Rifle your sniper and not the Rail Rifle. Maybe I'm confusing the two, but I thought the Rail Rifle was much better stat wise.

I'm torn between getting a heavy specialist on a stealth suit or taking a stealth suit as a veteran.

Thanks for posting, any play-by-play regarding your win? How did everybody do?

I don't want to be a party pooper but technically your list was slightly illegal since only a Shas'ui can be a Leader so you'd need a second Firewarrior if you wanted the DS8 turret or just make one of your Pathfinder into your Leader instead.

Congrats on your win anyway. Kinda unexpected that you didn't lose a single model with so many T3 Sv5+ models in your team!
