Best Way to Set Up Deathwatch for Kill Team?

Well I think you could just paint the Xenoblade silver and say its a power sword.

I agree.. I feel like they didnt make shotguns as devastating as they should be for CQC.

I played against marines and chaos marines so maybe the shotgun would be better against Orks or Guard but with only a 16" range, you want your shotgunner up close in charge range. The gun itself just doesn't have enough bite to make it a proper threat.

Well going through the thread again I’d like to share a few things I’ve picked up playing with and against various factions.

Mostly I’m very happy with the way having an extra sound works. That combines with the mechanics of Kill Team are actually really making me enjoy my Primaris Marines. Please don’t take this the wrong way if you are anti-Primaris, there’s still a ton of options. But for those of us that have loved the aesthetics of Primaris, it’s a really fun way to get to use your Primaris.

I am absolutely loving the Reivers and Sarge in particular. The grenade launcher is very good, and flame weapons are really strong against assault armies. I would say I still need to find a cheaper team though as I’m always dangerously low on dudes. And we lack the gritty cheap unit that can act as cover and block CC.

Multi damage weapons are huge against marines. I still haven’t got the DW shotgun into the rotation but the flexibility sells me on it, however the lack of strength at over half range stinks, but any flamer is good against Orks which are fielding 17-20 models fairly easily

So I’m on the fence with the shotgun. But very happy with Primaris. I still need to figure out the CC angle for the DW because I know what something like a Death Guard fighter with a Flail can do to a shooty Kill Team and let me tell you... it is nasty!

So far, I have come up with this. I tried to make it balanced by having 2 ranged and 2 melee focus and the leader is a fluffy choice because it'll be a Chaplain model (with the reduced stats)

Deathwatch [100pts]

Leader:

Watch Sergeant [18pts]

Selections: Boltgun, Leader, Power maul

Specialists:

Black Shield [21pts]

Selections: Power maul, Storm shield, Zealot

Intercessor Gunner [20pts]

Selections: Auxiliary grenade launcher, Bolt pistol, Bolt rifle, Comms

Veteran Gunner [21pts]

Selections: Deathwatch frag cannon, Demolitions

Non-specialists:

Reiver Sergeant [20pts]

Selections: Combat knife, Grapnel Launcher, Heavy bolt pistol

I feel like you can only afford one Primaris Marine. How does everyone else feel about it ?

What is the damage output for the shotgun ?

If you go cheap you can do 2 Intercessors and 4 veterans (1 of which being a leader with power sword and bolter). Comes in at 98 points so sprinkle in whatever you like for two points. With SIA I feel like that’s not a bad setup at all.

That seems like a really good kill team, and although I'm pretty firmly in the anti-Primaris camp (likely due to old age and feeling they've jumped the shark) the addition of the Reiver and their great potential actually makes me think about picking one up... but only one... ;)

Also, Zealot is definitely thematic for a Blackshield, but I think Combat might be the better fit when you give him a power maul.

<tries to figure out where I can get just one non-easy-to-build reiver>

Well I know GW wont do this but I wish for those who don't like Primaris Marines, to give Sternguard and Vanguard Veterans as choices vs Primaris. I've seen people use jump packs as grapple guns, chainswords do the same as combat knives and for the heavy bolt pistol just say its an upgraded bolt pistol.

Ah, I was mostly joking... I'll probably bite the bullet and pick up the box of 10 and kitbash half as Deathwatch. The mobility Reivers get with the grapple gun is ridiculous!

As for the other 5, I've got a squad of Grey Knights that look -painfully- small even compared to the Deathwatch marines so I'll smash them together to form a 5 man GK Killteam wearing Reiver short pants.

I'm planning on getting a second Start Collecting, and doing this:

- Sergeant: Boltgun - Leader

- Gunner: Deathwatch Frag Cannon - Heavy

- Gunner: Deathwatch Frag Cannon - Sniper

- Gunner: Deathwatch Frag Cannon - Comms

- Gunner: Deathwatch Frag Cannon

That comes out to just under or at 100 points.

I mean, this list is for giggles, but yeah.

Might not be the best list, but its infuriating for people to deal with

Getting ready to place an order to get my core manual and some paint. I want to jump in with DW. Is the Kill Team box an ok place to start building my team? Should I get 2 of them or a Start Collecting box? Or something else like the KILL TEAM CASSIUS box?

The Start Collecting! is much more value (2 5-man Kill-Teams are 70, the box is 85). Kill Team Cassius is good for getting more unique-looking Marines, but you get a bunch of Marines you can't use (no Bikers, Jump-packs or Terminators in Kill Team)

Well...seems Start Collecting! is a hot item at the moment. Nothing in stock that I can find except one ebay listing that's $17 more than I can get it elsewhere. Guess it might be the price to play if other places won't be getting more in stock in a reasonable time frame.

Usually Start Collecting boxes do not go for anything less than what you can get from a local store with their reduction. Plus the Dreadnoughts pretty much sell all the time, so its probably the best deal right now for DW.

And wooah the Kill Team boxes are no longer 17,99 anymore...

I can get Start Collecting! for $67 USD right now. But DW is sold out. They said I could order at the current sale price and they'd ship once they get more. But GW hasn't told them when that might be.

On another note...anyone have an idea what the next two Kill Team collections are going to be?

You might be right there, wait till see what the next one is. Although I haven't seen a timescale or information on what faction it would be. If you trust the shop you can always pre-order then cancel if GW release the DW box? Unfortunately I am in Europe so have no idea of stores in the US.

Yeah...when was KT released? 21st or something like that? So 2 weeks later we got two new collections. So maybe there will be two more coming in a couple weeks. I'd think GW would want to roll them out fairly quickly. I don't get the whole dragging things along routine but I'm not a business person so maybe there's a reason. I'd prefer to just see the game and all the day one factions released at once so that people that want to play the game like me but don't have models, like me...don't have to wait weeks/months for a collection box to be released. Not that the collection boxes are the only way to get into the game, but the extra cards, terrain and the dice are nice to have.

In the latest White Dwarf it mentions that the Kill Team box for Deathwatch is coming later this month.

Any guesses of what it's going to be? Aside from a Kill-Team of Marines. I'm wondering what terrain it's going to come with.

Some sort of secret Xenos laboratory or holding cells would be a cool idea, like the dissected Ork or genestealer head and spine in the holding tank type of stuff.

Very cool. I expect a very  basic 5 man Vet squad, but I am more interested in the Strats and the background.

I picked up the last Astartes box (on reorders!) at my local GW and while the pale blue/grey Space Wolves Reivers will fit my army nicely, there was the terrain of course and a nice background piece. It's only a few pages but I'm a sucker for this stuff (I'm the guy who bought the Fortress edition codex in 7th!)

I doubt we will see dice, but the unique strats should be very good from what I've seen so far from the Astartes.

I'm not sure if it was you or someone else, but the Astra Militarum dice are really nice imo for DW - I ordered some.

It was Ibris initially that brought it up. The thing that I'm worried about is seeing them.

I do own the original limited Deathwatch dice, and I do agree they can be a bit difficult to read from the opposite side of the table because of the way the numbers are circled. However my fear is these "Deathwatch" Kill Team dice might be too dark.

I saw them in the store and I could see the same potential issue. Let me know what you think when you get them. I do think they look great for Deathwatch.

Easy enough to get some custom dice made I suppose. And with so few needed...wouldn't cost much either. 10-25 would be $1 each. The kicker though would be the d10. Only need 2 but the minimum order is 10. So you'd be in for $20 in all but probably wouldn't be too hard to unload the extra d10's if you wanted.
