Facing the Unknown - Starting a New army together

So excited was I in starting this project, that I got a little carried away and started before taking pictures. Ooops.

Here's the first vow, minus the Raider, which is being built tomorrow. The Vvraine conversion is NOT included in this vow, so ignore that for now. That's next vow material.

No worries. Good start so far.

Some nice stuff going on here!

@Blackpumpkin -- nice to see some EC on here, looking forward to seeing the Noise Marines! What's the plan for them? Kakophoni models? Old Skool metal or kitbashes? I really need to tidy up my herest Era EC loyalists because if updated EC hit I'll be hard pushed not to abandon all else....

@ Oldest - I was so happy to see Sons of the Phoenix and that tester looked great! However I feel your pain re doing white without an airbrush! Luckily I like the idea of Skin Walkers almost as much!

@Torch - I like the bases!! Will stand out well against the custodes! You might have just convinced me on how to base my Iron Warriors....

Anyway, my second 'test' marine is done! I'm happier with this one! I initially had a dullcote finish, but I feel the armour needs to be glossy to reflect the 'magical' nature of Egyptian Space wizards!! Sadly the glossy armour doesn't photograph as well....

I've started work on 4more vets and might even have a work around with basic tactical so watch this space!!

I've also built my praetor/exhalted sorcerer so I'll get some previews up soon'

I've been chatting with Grieux to work on a little 'rivalry' with his Space Wolves. I really need to up my game to compete against his varagyr but I do like a challenge.....

What color paint is that, Larkyn??

As of right now, the Kabalites just have a wash of turquoise ink from P3, and the Visarch conversion has the ink wash, and then a wash of Coelia Greenshade from GW. It was still wet when I took that picture.

I got most of the stuff for my Noise Marines before I had seen the kakophoni, but I must admit, they are really sweet.  I am just using the generic CSM squad with the sonic weapon upgrade packs.  But they are gonna be sweet!

Looking great all!! I’ve been plugging away on a standing project between plumbing issues and birthdays. Really excited to begin the learning and building portion.

A ? For you regular 40k gamers. Is the 8th edition marine codex the best one to represent the imperial fists? I remember in 7th the yellow boys had their own ‘dex and I’ve been in Heresy land so long I’m out of the loop.

It's the only one, since all marines aside from Dark/Blood Angels, Grey Knights, Space Wolves and Deathwatch are all in the normal marine codex. No sub-codices.

That being said, their rules in the 8th Edition Marine codex are fun (oh, you're in cover? Hope you didn't like those cover saves....)

Dang that looks great. Really like too all the white parts so I can gore them with the blood of his treacherous brothers!

Aggressors could work if you are prepared to scrape the eagles off and are either happy to have a backpack on your Terminators, or sculpt a power plant into the armor. Arm wise you would probably need to source some additional ones as the bas arms are not that good for converting I think.

Using the plastic Tartarus or Cataphractii would be easier. I think they are both marginally taller than traditional Terminators (though that could just be due to a more upright poses).

Lord Commander Eidolon, looking good. I like the mix of Rubric and pre Rubric parts. By keeping a more normal helmet, shoulder pads and bolter it feels like it is decorated armour without spilling over into the full chaos effect.

Edit: Forgot to add, HCMistborn, there are some rummours of new Abbadon comming, wither with Obliterators or Terminators. So it might be worth waiting a little and focusing on another unit for the moment.

Anyone have any good suggestions for upscaling some chaos terminators? I was thinking either converting gravis, I suck with greenstuff.

I'd certainly be going for Justearin models if you can get them, ideal for Chaos Termies! A spacer at the waist and plasticard on the feet add height. Alternately you can use plasticard to bilk out the shins if you cut them in half, there are some tutorials on this technique around.

Haha, bring it on! These will be pretty tame - wait until the Sorcerers and Sekhmet make an appearance! All is not yet dust.....

And here is another WIP effort, a slight repose as the rubric kit is very static!

I'm actually finding the arms the issue, very difficult to add variety too!!

Finally finished building my Chief Librarian Tigurius count as, just to finish the first tactical squad

Soooooo... I may have opened Dark Imperium, saw the new Death Guard and fallen in love... (With Nurgle stuff, ewwwww).

I don't think the Primaris are really doing it for me to be honest and ya'know, once you step on the eightfold path, there's no turning back... Boys... I think I am a heretic.
I submit, the ruinous powers have taken me.

I know it's bad but can I change me vow to something more heretical or is army changing an insta-fail? Forgive me.

Oldest, as this is about Learning about a new army you cannot fail the Learning Vow.

In my original posting of the rules I had not fully though through trough my idea that this is about learning and that people may find that an army just is not for them. I had paid a nod to this scenario in that a learning vow cannot be failed by incompletion but it wasn’t until several days later (in this post) that I reached a more rounded view and made the below quoted amendment to the rules post.

An army not for you (added 9th August)

If, after completing your Learning Vow, you find that the army does not work for you, then you may make a new Learning Vow for a new army. However, to do so you should, to the best of your ability, share what you have learned about the first army and explain why it did not work out for you.

I would ask that if you want to evoke this rule a second time (so you have already restarted once and want to restart a second time) that you have a long think about why multiple armies are not working out for you. We are all here to help each other.

In short you can change your army but there is a small hoop you have to jump through. Give the Primaris another try, complete a troop and HQ choice (so that you can complete the Learning Vow) and then see where you are at. If you find that Primaris are not too bad after all then you could continue, if however your love for grandfather Nurgle persists then you are free at that point to start a new journey with a new Learning Vow.

That said, those are some great looking Deathguard. Kudos.

Another great looking marine, thank you for sharing.

Looking good, ready for some colour? What is the conversion based on? I don’t recognize the body.

Good to see this thread going strong with lots of projects. I hope everyone is doing well.

@Torch - I like the bases!! Will stand out well against the custodes! You might have just convinced me on how to base my Iron Warriors....

Cheers! Its an easy recipe:

  1. Add a bit of sand and a few rocks to a base.
  2. Basecoat Mephiston Red
  3. Base Martian Iron Earth on the non-sand/rocky parts
  4. Drybrush Jokaro Orange to blend the two together
  5. Wash with Seraphim Sepia
  6. Pigment Wast with Dark Red Orchre from Vallejo

I can't take credit for it though, as I found the recipe on youtube.

@TrawlingCleaner Love your counts-as Tiggy, you've done an awesome job making a usually static model look super dynamic.

@Oldest Stay the course! I think I've been tempted by pretty much every army since I decided to commit to Custodes. On the other hand, your Death Guard are looking like they might have already swayed you! Fantastic paint job.

I have been pretty busy recently trying to purchase my first house, but I've had some free time to finish my first model today while my partner is at work.

What I have learned:

  • Painting nmm is super hard! I think with this guy I have grasped the basic idea and I hope to get better with this technique as I progress through the other models.
  • I think I am more motivated to finish this army due to its small model count. A 1500pt list has been planned and it only runs in at 16 models, this makes it seem a lot more achievable!

I haven't played any games yet, and probably wont be able to until I get a few more units. But I have a narrative 'hold the line' style game planned for other the weekend against a horde or Orks or Chaos Cultists.

Thanks dude! That's my plan for tomorrow. The body is a Limited ed Forgeworld Character, maybe Iron Warriors?

Thanks Torch, Custodes look so much better in black. Yours are case and point

Facing the Unknown – August Report

We are roughly one month into the event so I thought it was time for a little report. So far there have been no completion but a lot of ground work.

There are 20 participants. 15 of us are aiming for a Patrol Detachment so far while the other 5 are working towards a Vanguard detachment. I am a little surprised the no one has opted for a Spearhead, Outrider or Super Heavy Auxiliary.

While I did not expect that there would be many of any of the more specialized detachments I was vaguely expecting someone to try and learn a Knight army starting with one Knight or a unit of Armigers. The lack of Spearhead and Outrider is more understandable as they are more specialized then even the Vanguard detachment.

There are 11 ‘Imperial Armies’ of which 7 are Marine based, 5 Chaos aligned armies, 3 Eldar and one lone Genestealer Cult, good luck Dragonlover.

--- --- ---

That said it strongly looks like Chaos has claimed to its banner one of the ‘Imperial’ participants as Oldest has fallen in love with the followers of Grandfather Nurgle. An unexpected turn of events I am sure but what we have seen of Oldest Deathguard shows true excitement for this new new army. I hope that in time you can find your way back to the Skin Walkers as that was an interesting conversion, or maybe fold them into your Deathguard.

A few other highlights of the last 4 weeks include

Grieux’s Space Wolves show a lot of promise and his Murdefang is a fitting conversion.

Lord Comander Eidolon is busy experimenting with candy red armour for this Thousand Sons.

MrBadweeds scarily creepy and possibly insane Wraithlord

TrawlingCleaner meanwhile has done a stunning conversion to make his own Chief Librarian Tigurius and has already all but finished a captain to lead his force.

.Torch. has shown us that Custodes look even better in something other than gold and I look forward to seeing more.

--- --- ---

Now let’s see what the next four weeks will bring. I am hoping that we will see some completions by the end of September and hopefully some of us will have managed to get some games in with our new forces.

I’ve been quiet on here, but not completely unproductive. The bulk of my 1st squad and plaguecaster are built, just need to get the greenstuff going and figure out how I’m building blight launchers. Hopefully I’ll have progress pics up by the end of the weekend
