Hammer And Anvil AM lists, Ideas, Help?

I am slowly very slowly rebuilding my steel legion army. And I was wondering if it would be advisable to combine it with another Regiment or Army to be the anvil to their Hammer.

My first thought was to use Valhallan regimental doctrines, then looking at the rules voystoyan or mordrian could be useful too.

As for the Miniatures i want them to look like they are similar but distinctly different, because of that and a new job with a pay boost i am planing to get DKOK for the other force if i go with AM (is it worth getting the forge world books for their Doctrines?).

I also have a blood angles army so stuff from that could be included. But I am open to any suggestions.

As for my Steel legion i have about 6 full squads W/Heavy weapons (mostly HB and ML some las cannons and 3 converted to Auto cannons) 2 command squad (2 plas 2 GL) and some others.

For vehicles I have 4 chimeras 1 hell hound 2 standard LRBT 2 magnetized LRBT 1 start collecting Tempetus scions box (unassembled) and 1 Baneblade (unassembled going to magnetize to get all 8 versions)

I guess what I am looking for is advice and army lists that would be good (i don't plan on playing many tournaments but i do plan on playing a few local ones) and somewhat fluffy.

Any and all suggestions, builds, lists and advice would be greatly appreciated! i haven't Played in about 6 years and want to get back into it!

If you want to mix regiments/looks/etc in a Guard army it couldn't be easier. The lore fully supports it in many different ways (most basic: merged regiments), so with the detachment/allies system it's easy to create a diverse force :) So it comes down to what you want, in models and rules, mostly :tu:

Guard prefer shooting, so a better ally would be one that prefers stabbing. As Sanguinary mentions your BA would do that nicely.

I like running a Scion battalion with lots of Plasma to drop in T2 or 3 and deal with high value targets. There are few things as satisfying as your opponents face when you tell him you first 8 drops are in reserve so he can just get on with deploying.

If you are looking for an anvil, Kreig are worth it. They are +1pt to a regualar guard ws3+ and ignore moral caused by shooting. But do loose First rank fire second rank fire and another order (can't remember the second) and have a few other limitations, but the ability to ignore moral from shooting make them a brilliant anvil.

p.s. watch out for their lasguns, they break ALL THE TIME! oh and DKOK grenadiers were discontinued RIP so only infantry squads for troops (which are gorgeous, I use 2 as cadian in most games)

Krieg miss out on take aim as well, they do get duty unto death and the one that lets them fire lasguns and hotshots as pistol 2.

If you don't want to pay FW prices for Krieg or want variety in your models regardless of regiment check out Anvil Industry and Victoria Miniatures

Blood Angels currently see the top tables so using them is a no brainer.

Steel Legion with a trio of BA smash captains and some Sanguinary Guard in a supreme command detachment sounds pretty good to me.

As much as I hate to say it, you're probably better with a Command Squad than Sanguinary Guard.

Yes, Sanguinary Guard are, for the most part, better.

*But* Command Squads can tank those Vindicare shots that kill Captains, and protect your Captain from revenge attacks in melee.
