Criminal to keep it in WD It is set on Oblatz with the themes of exploitation that come with it, but it touches "the giant" from Fire & Ice, as well as the weird warp :cuss: from Reverie/Requiem Infernal. Chronologically it happens before "13th Psalm" because the Conteza is still alive, and probably before "Fire & Ice" as well, since there is no sign of Tau activity on the planet yet. The Thirteenth Psalm is in my personal opinion this is the best standalone short story in the Black Library catalogue. Blindsight, is magnificent but only if you are a Coil veteran. Arguably the best "dark coil" short, even if 13th psalm is a better 40k story overall. Requiem Infernal is geat. But it took me reading it twice to appreciate it fully. My other favorite would be Fire and Ice; the mind games being played with the Calavera made my hair stand up and caused me to stare at a running ceiling fan for a couple of hours in order to ponder just what the hell was going on once I finished the story. When I first read Requiem Infernal, I completely missed that Asenath's backstory was the Imperium's conquest of the Providence system! It is the best "Angels Penitent" story in the coil, even moreso than The Sins of my Brothers. The reason I prefer 13th Psalm though, is that has more internal pieces and was my first introduction to the layered take on the warp and corruption that Fehervari has. The only other author which I have seen treat the warp with such nuance is Chris Wraight, but to a lesser degree. The inquisitorial mind games are great, but the Calavera has some 300 IQ plays going on. I thought at first that he might be Czervantes returning from his lost Crusade, but this Tzeentchian plottery doesn't fit Varzival's character. Then I started to think he might be Satori, because as far as we know we have never seen Satori wearing his battle armor. Go figure. I'm also VERY happy that Blindsight will be put in print here, since it was skipped in the omnibuses. The cover is also very Fehervari, putting the planet - which is ALWAYS a significant member of the cast, even if it doesn't appear directly in the Dramatis Personae - in scene, while keeping the characters as ill-defined silhouettes. They're swallowed by the landscape, and the horror in the distance, in a way. It's wonderful! Still a shame Warcom didn't have the guts to put it as the header image for the article, instead of Cadia cover #934... I think this is most certainly Providence, too, which means we might be coming full circle, or as close to it as you can within the coil. We might finally figure out some new truths about Trinity, the bell. A question I have is: When are we going to be there? Some small content-speculation, looking at the cover, description and previous Coil works. Going back to Providence would be insane (and very delicious), but the thought of The Coil reaching a sort of culmination/ full circle moment is a sobering and honestly saddening thought.
