On the surface, the galaxy’s finest warriors ward against the dark forces that plague humanity, but emerging cracks are everywhere. Chaos festers within the sprawling web of the Dark Coil, and xenos threats grow ever stronger.

In The Reverie, the Angels Resplendent reckon with an ancient sin that poisons their Chapter, and their story unfolds in crisis and conspiracy. When Astra Militarum survivors reach a sanctuary world in Requiem Infernal, the Adepta Sororitas must fight malign forces which stir in their wake. Delve into the darkness within Fehervari’s short stories, where the Night Lords enact a bloody ritual, a hive world is beset with mysterious peril and a Salamanders Firedrake burns with righteous fury as part of a Deathwatch kill-team.

A master of the horror at the heart of Warhammer 40,000, Peter Fehervari explores the deepest recesses of both the mind and the stars in this Dark Coil collection.

Curious, that The Sins of My Brothers is so far up in the list, if we consider this the print order. Chronologically, it makes sense, but thematically, it's one that I'd put towards the end.

Still a pity the WD story didn't get omnibus'd, too....

The Ascension Omnibus should be out in general retail as of this week, by the way. Best make sure you got yours ordered, we all know how low BL keeps even Omnibus print runs...

My one regret is that the White Dwarf short story remains uncollected as of today. I figured it might be included in the recent Darkness Eternal anthology, but that was Altar of Maws, so that hope was dashed.

Chronological order is a loose term when it comes to he coil. But the Omnibuses order is quite decent way to go I think.

The Greater Evil (short story)
Fire Caste (novel)
Out Caste (short story)
A Sanctuary of Wyrms (short story)
Altar of Maws (short story)
Vanguard (short story)
Fire and Ice (short story)
Cast a Hungry Shadow (short story)
Cult of the Spiral Dawn (novel)

The Reverie (Novel)
The Crown of Thorns (Short story)
The Sins of My Brothers (Short story)
The Thirteenth Psalm (Short story)
Nightbleed (Short story)
Nightshift Nineteen (Short story)
Requiem Infernal (Novel)
Aria Arcana (Short story)
The Walker in Fire (Short story)
Nightfall (Short story)

There's also a short story one of the White Dwarf issues. But I'm not sure where that one fits in.

Blindsight?

It is such a good story. Criminal to keep it in WD

It is set on Oblatz with the themes of exploitation that come with it, but it touches "the giant" from Fire & Ice, as well as the weird warp :cuss: from Reverie/Requiem Infernal.

Chronologically it happens before "13th Psalm" because the Conteza is still alive, and probably before "Fire & Ice" as well, since there is no sign of Tau activity on the planet yet.

My faves would be:

Fire Caste, is to this day one of the best guard novels, in spite of its misleading name.

The Thirteenth Psalm is in my personal opinion this is the best standalone short story in the Black Library catalogue.

Blindsight, is magnificent but only if you are a Coil veteran. Arguably the best "dark coil" short, even if 13th psalm is a better 40k story overall.

Requiem Infernal is geat. But it took me reading it twice to appreciate it fully.

I've always felt there was a purity to 'Crown of Thorns' that puts it immediately into my favourites. Likewise 'The Greater Evil' because it has so many delightful layers to it.

Fire Caste is absolutely a singular book, though.

Fire Caste is an all-time classic and truly one of the better pieces of literature that BL has ever and will ever produce. My other favorite would be Fire and Ice; the mind games being played with the Calavera made my hair stand up and caused me to stare at a running ceiling fan for a couple of hours in order to ponder just what the hell was going on once I finished the story. Also, Iwuji Sharks are just metal, so extra points there.

Fire Caste is great, but honestly I liked all of his latter novels better. I started with Requiem Infernal and read Fire Caste last, so that could cover perceptions

It may, because the order in which you read things affects the reveals.

When I first read Requiem Infernal, I completely missed that Asenath's backstory was the Imperium's conquest of the Providence system!

Agree on Crown of Thorns. It is the best "Angels Penitent" story in the coil, even moreso than The Sins of my Brothers. The reason I prefer 13th Psalm though, is that has more internal pieces and was my first introduction to the layered take on the warp and corruption that Fehervari has. The only other author which I have seen treat the warp with such nuance is Chris Wraight, but to a lesser degree.

Fire and Ice also has the most Based depiction of Farsight. He feels buddha-like at times. The inquisitorial mind games are great, but the Calavera has some 300 IQ plays going on.

I thought at first that he might be Czervantes returning from his lost Crusade, but this Tzeentchian plottery doesn't fit Varzival's character. Then I started to think he might be Satori, because as far as we know we have never seen Satori wearing his battle armor.
