Enigami
Hello all, I've been away from Warhammer for some time, but now the time has come to put together my dream army. My intended purpose for this plog is to get the B&C community's input, comments, criticism, etc. to make my Talons army the best it can be. Without further ado, this is what I have put together so far: If anyone would be so kind as to offer some advice on my paint scheme and other matters, I would greatly appreciate it. First off, I have been torn between two paint schemes. Both schemes are rooted in the use of a dark metal (likely metallic black) being lightened up to something like leadbelcher (with airbrush). I would then tint the metal with a colored paint like Greenstuff world's chameleon paint in either a purple or teal kind of like FW's Iron hands paint scheme (this decision would be based on what I plan to do with the gems, hair, clothing, etc.). I plan to do the panels that are traditionally red in a marble scheme and then shore up some small accents in a dark gold. I would then weather and whatnot accordingly. My intention to is to use this scheme to give the army a dark and gritty feel to it while giving off a regal vibe. Please let me know if you think this is a viable scheme and if you have any additional ideas. The thoughts on my schemes split when I think about gems, hair, clothing, etc. on the miniatures. I would like to either go with a dark regal purple or a high gradient teal. Please let me know your thoughts. Also, I have ordered several different kinds of flight stands for my skimmers. While I haven't gotten them in the mail to test them, I would appreciate any recommendations or stories of past experience with third party flight stands. Thanks everyone. I look forward to posting on here again! TLDR: I'm doing a 30k Custodes and Sisters of Silence Army. Stick around and you'll eventually see (hopefully) neat models. PeteySödes
Clicked for the great title and was not disappointed. Are you a MBMBaM fan at all? The title seems like a Mcelroy bit. On topic though, arent those chameleon paints best on a gloss black? Im curious how it would interact on top of the metal base as you say. I look forward to seeing any experiments though! Enigami
Haha. I definitely had to look up what MBMBaM was, so no, it wasn't intentionally related. However, I'm glad the the title got you here, especially since I'd like all the advice this great community can offer. Yeah, I've definitely read that those paints are best on gloss black, but was thinking of using them more as a tint rather than base coating the model in those colors. Although, I have zero experience with those paints. Do you think tinting with washes or inks through an airbrush would be the better alternative? Regardless, I will be posting test results with those paints as soon as I receive them (hopefully today). Im not sure really, I know tinting metals through glaze and washing works well so you likely wouldnt go wrong there. Id encourage you to do some tests though, im curious too since those chameleon paints are really neat looking! Enigami
After receiving my paints over the weekend, I've finally come up with a small update. I'll save my opinion of the chameleon paint for later, but for now here is the metallic base (Test on a discarded knight's armor plates) I have come up with using Scale colors: That's Scale's Black Metal worked up with Heavy Metal and Speed Metal. I'm very happy with this gradient and will be using it in some fashion for my army, likely for sisters of silence. I tested out the chameleon colors and was displeased. I found that the lighter your base color, the more the "secondary color" on the shifting paints shows through. Here are my results: http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv194/Enigami1990/IMG_1630_zpsittxo1c4.jpg The five pieces in the bottom right hand corner were re primed in black. I can't remember which one is which, but if anyone would like to know, please let me know and I'll dig out the paint map I used during tests. My disappointment in the chameleon paints wasn't with the colors, I could have had a heyday with all those gorgeous colors. However, the chameleon paint doesn't take washes, glazes, or for that matter any other paint very well. In other words, you can't really do anything with it. After putting a glaze over it, it becomes dull and the color washes out leaving you with a odd film over the paint. Needless to say, I'm going to pass on them. Not all was lost, though. I did manage to come up with a rough scheme for my sisters. Here it is: It's the high gradient metal glazed with purple, green, and yellow. What do you guys think? And I'll leave this update with a look at the beginning stages of my magnet campaign: http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/vv194/Enigami1990/IMG_1639_zpswpywy2qk.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/353351-custards-scary-gals-30k-talons-of-the-emperor-plog/#findComment-5244232 Share on other sites
keeblerartillery
Looking great man! I did some research on the chameleon colors - you need to let them cure for a bit before sealing and THEN you can add things to them. But putting it right on the paint does have an add effect. Can’t wait to see more! Hopefully, I'll be able to pin down my custodes scheme fairly soon. Enigami
@ Markus_ Thanks buddy! That's exactly what I was going for, so I'm very glad that's how they appear to you. @ Keebler Working on it. Greenstuffing and fine tuning my cutodian guard squad, terminators, weird 40k in-between, the two baby dreads, and Krole. Should have a massive painting update in a couple weeks, but will be putting individual models or a test custard up in between. AlanofAngels
That Sister looks awesome, dude! I've found that they and the custards are my favorite models in the past couple years and I wouldn't be surprised to see them bringing some folks who have been out of the hobby for a bit back in. Your blends and shading on her look excellent! What color did you end up painting the blade? It never ceases to amaze me how the color of power weapons can totally change how the eye perceives the model as a whole. Also do you dig the Scale75 metallics? I've heard they're excellent but I have yet to try them but would love to hear your thoughts so far. Keep up the great work, man! Enigami
@ AlanofAngels Thanks, man! I'm going to post the whole scheme below for Betrayer and I'll make sure to have a detailed sword section for you. I love the wiggle room the lore gives when it comes to power weapons, it lets you get creative and stick to a nice group of colors that go together instead of forcing you to paint a weapon one way or another. (The color I chose was exclusively chosen to offset the silver and tie the sisters in with the custodes, not necessarily because I think power weapons should look like that. However, I happen to like the idea of the bronzish color being anti demon/psyker metal or something like that). Dude, I can't recommend scale colors enough. The metallics go on thin and are gorgeous. Same with the non metals. I can't recommend them enough. As a bonus, the paints are of the perfect consistency to do brush clean up work without overwhelming the light airbrush coats. @ betrayer41 Here you go, buddy! It's a long list, but the armor is simple enough. Sisters: - Prime in flat black. Sword: - Warplock Bronze (GW) - Hashut Copper (GW) - Dwarven Gold (Scale) - Speed Metal (Scale) - Light coat of Warplock, then highlight up to the speed metal. Armor: - Black Metal (Scale) - Heavy Metal (Scale) - Speed Metal (Scale) - Base in black metal and spot highlight up to speed metal. - Black Ink (VA Game) - Violet Ink (Scale) - Green Ink (Scale) - Yellow Ink (Scale) Do light thin coats of the inks. (water them down) - Speed Metal (Scale) Fur: - Black Leather (Scale) - Violet Ink (Scale) - Dry Brush Mechanicus Standard Grey (GW) - Dry Brush administrative grey (GW) - Dry Brush white (Scale) Red: - Abyssal Blue (Scale) - 1/2 Scale Violet 1/2 Blood Red (Scale) - Blood Red (Scale) Cloth Red: Wet blend up to blood red. Hair: Dry brush after the abyssal blue.
