Codicier's Noble Dark Angels WIP

I've decided to start a thread to try and keep my momentum going forward from ETL and keep me working on getting a army ready for the battlefield again

The concept i have for them is basically a take on Arthurian knights

I mean :
a noble brotherhood trying to recapture the days of honour and justice when their king walked among them before he was betrayed his sword lost and their great castle ruined.
I don't have to change much :biggrin.:

By going back to our legions origin in the Order i'm aiming to paint them in a slightly more shinny, slightly more ornate way than GW typically do (with lots of greenery and ruins on their bases to help with the mood).

Moving on from the my starter in ETL the obvious thing is that i need another HQ & troop choice.
So i'm starting with a relatively easy to finish project and have got to work on a Lieutenant conversion i made during a period when i was ill during ETL

I might go back in with some extra bright highlights once i've finished the rest and have a better idea of the balance but i'm pretty happy with this as a start

so here we are working slowly but surely to getting this guy done, and hes certainly looking closer to his finish than before.

I went with a copper to replace the traditional dark angels red bolter with something that looked a bit more ornate and old and have to say i'm really happy with how it turned out. Honestly tempted to maybe roll it out to some units too.

My main concerns atm are that maybe the his right hand shoulder feels too plain?
Think i should consider either changing the trim at the top to gold or maybe painting the whole bottom half either gold or a company heraldry pattern?
Also unsure about the robe, it feels very plain too, i'm thinking maybe a deep red or purple trim?

It's quite hard for a lieutenant to get him more ornate than a sergeant but less so than a captain.

I'd say that, with the ornate backpack, the winged helmet, and the tabard, he already looks quite ornamental in appearance. Perhaps even too much so for a lieutenant. So, I'd not go with much more, other than a particular use of color on the shoulders, if anything at all.

yeah you are probably right, i definitely have a tendency to want to do lots of little intricate details any chance i get even if its not always appropriate to the mini.
Plus really i'm trying to get more stuff done, so in any choice where it's extra work vs just finishing the mini... i should just finish the mini
Cheers for the feedback.

Loving him so far...especially the copper.

FWIW, I'd darken the inside of the robe to create more contrast, and maybe a bit in the folds/creases.

As for the right hand, just brighten up the gold a bit, that could also happen to the other gold for visual linking too.

Another option is to add a small amount of text to the right lower shoulder section, a simple spot detail will really create the interest you seek.

I'd darken the recesses in the helmet wings too, it'll make the light pop more and at the same time give the mini some top to bottom balance.

I say all this as you have obvious talent and I can't help myself :P

You are spot on about the robe. I did the initial pass by airbrush and i still need to go back in and manually darken and brighten some areas.

I'm unsure what exactly i want to achieve with the feather atm, if i want them to look more worn and natural or if i want it to look almost like a the helm is a well treated (almost parade) item.

As for the shoulder part of me is wondering if I might just go to that good old fall back option of all space marine players and add a purity seal.

Finished Lieutenant

Lieutenant multi angle angel

I think I'm 99% done here, maybe a bit of weathering to the bottom of the model and some extra blood on the chainsaw (&maybe a skull to the base? you can never have enough skulls)? I could stand to neaten up the black trim a little but i'm trying to fight my perfectionism so i'll probably leave it.

Either way I'm feeling pretty happy with how the Lieutenant has turned out even if i still worked at my normal slow pace.

Was a bit apprehensive about the base because i hadn't tried out the idea for the scheme yet, but think i got the feel for a overgrown city ruin just about. I think maybe i might want to introduce more bits of rusted industrial debris into future schemes because it came out maybe a bit too green feeling but i think it was a good first attempt.

Hopefully starting on a squad of old metal Sniper Scouts and Naaman over the weekend to give a a tiny but technically legal force :biggrin.:
