New Mephiston/Psychic awakening p3

For Dante I'd love to get something like the new Katakros model from AoS (just less static as he'd be in the middle of the fight with his Jump Pack, Axe and Inferno Pistol obviously).

The rules they gave Katakros are great too. Basically at full health all his attendands fight and he only contributes a little. When he loses wounds one after another attendand falls away but he contributes more until he finally uses all of his attacks and also uses his shield.

I had similar thoughts when I contemplated on what would be great to have in the next Codex:BA.

One defining thing about Dante is that he is always accompanied by the Sanguinary Guard. On the table, when you drop him with a squad of SG and make a charge with one but fail with the other, it looks very silly. Like, the Chapter Master charges into combat, but his bodyguards stand behind and watch, or the other way around. I was thinking about a Strategem that let's one's retinue automaticaly charge along with the Character, but I like your suggestion too.

I also had thoughts about a big model of Dante + Sanguinor on one base. Like a single model. Them fighting in tandem. But that would imply that wherever Dante goes, Sanguinor appears, and thats a little bit to silly.

Agree with that. Even a basic rule like:

Sworn Retainers: Immediately after rolling for charge distance with this unit, you may also move a character within 3" of this unit towards the target enemy unit by the amount shown on the dice. If it comes within 1" of the target enemy unit it counts as having charged that unit this turn.

Maybe something like this so you're incentivized to run fly units? Deepstrike Dante (or other models which get this rule) with some Assault Marines, Vanguard Vets or Sanguinary Guard, whatever. You could even pair him up with a Smashy for extra punch.

Sworn Retainers: Immediately after rolling for charge distance with this unit, you may immediately charge with one unit consisting entirely of <CHAPTER> FLY INFANTRY models within 3" using the result of this model's charge roll.

Simple change to Descent of Angels. Just add in "If used on Dante [or a Charcter], then pick an additional unit with 6". This unit can also roll 3D6 for its charge [or uses the same charge roll] as long is it charges the same unit(s)." Could make it cost 1 more CP for the additional unit as well. It would be a simple change to allow a character to drop in leading a jump pack into battle.

Heroic Intervention only comes into play during your opponent's turn though, it would not help you maintain the narrative of bodyguards charging into combat alongside a character.

I meant more that you could have "Heroic Intervention" AND "Heroic Charge" or whatever. Using similar wording for intervention, like "a single character within 3" of a non-character non-vehicle non-monster unit that is attempting a charge roll may declare a HEROIC CHARGE, if the unit is successful, the character is treated as having successfully charged the same targets, move the same distance, and must remain within 3" of the chosen unit until the end of the turn. On a failure, the character may not attempt another charge, heroic or otherwise." sorta deal.

So you roll for the unit, and get a character to pass/fail with them, to prevent the issue of 1 or the other succeeding. Your losing out on potential chances to get SOMETHING into combat, but you won't have a unit rush off and leave the character, or have the character decide to brave overwatch charging something after his unit failed.

I think the easier fix is to change "heirs" to something similar. Along the lines of "if the warlord has made a successful charge move, this unit charges with that warlord, additionally if the warlord is wounded by an attack on a 2+ the hit is intercepted and the unit suffers a mortal wound"

This would turn the SG into the elite bodyguard unit they're supposed to be and not limit it to just Dante. This will also help get more longevity out of our smash caps too

So I lost track of which bits are Psychic Awakening pt 2 and 3, but WarCom today has a cool article on masters of the chapter:

I can oly hope that Meph, Astorath and Corbulo get upgraded with the additional rules for master of sanctity, chief librarian and Chief apothecary.

The Apothecary in particular is cool, allowing healing of 2 units per turn. Imagine bringing back 2 aggressors or terminators per turn.

There is already a unit like this. Saint Celestine. So it is possible.

Yeah,  some apothecary love would be much appreciated, but as its worded, you couldn't resurrect 2 dead multi wound models, as they come back with 1 wound, so the second use of the ability would simply heal that returned model up to 3 wounds. Unless you target 2 separate units with each activation i guess.

The narthecium ability or whatever strat would need to allow you to bypass the healing part, as RAW, it is mandatory.

Making them an HQ, Jump Packs and running them with something that benefits from the STR bonus. Sooooo... basically, running a Jump Pack Sanguinary Priest as support for a Smashy, for Blood Angels ONLY. Regular Apothecaries don't get to be an HQ, they don't get the STR bonus, they're just garbage, really.

What would make Apothecaries a competitive choice?

A 2CP strat that let you choose too revive a model on a 4+, then try again for an increased die roll of 5+, then again for 6+, etc... until you fail. Maybe update SP's to get a +1 when reviving a model.

Priests have their place, they are a force multiplier. BA have the best apothecaries in the game by comparison.

When you have big multi-wound units/expensive units they almost always make their points back. Centurions for example in codex marines are expensive. Potentially bringing one back a turn is massive for 60 points, as each revive is a net gain of 10+ points minimum.

If you're taking plasma inceptors and overcharge a lot this allows you to more liberally use those extra shots to do that with.

I almost always bring a priest in my BA lists, and I almost always bring one in my imperial fists list also.

As far as Mephiston goes; adding D3 wounds back to him a turn is also a plus.

BA have the best apothecaries in the game by comparison.

Nah, Grey Knights Apothecaries are better simply because they can wear Terminator armour and Hammers on top of being psykers too. Giving +1S really doesn't compare since we already get +1 to-wound anyway.

Dunno, if we could upgrade our primaris apothecaries to sanguinary priests i would be very happy +1 strength on my primaris stuff.

If our rievers could get access to the AP buff other marines get... +1 strength and +1, to wound coupled with their 4 attacks each on the charge... quite a nice unit

If you need a cheap Elite for a Battalion, that can be handy. The main problem with Apothecaries is that unless you have something very valuable to heal, you are normally better off buying more models than investing in healing existing models.

I love this.

But it feels distinctly like one of those sets of rules that will be for the vanilla lot while we are left with less options because we specialise.

Also because I doubt we'll get updated datasheets for all the characters and it'll just be Mephiston in the book.

But hey, we can DREAM!

I think a lot will depend on whether our Chaplains get litanies or not - if they do then there might be incentive to reprint lemartes and astorath.

I’m curious to see what they do in blood of Baal. If it’s just us and nids that’s a lot of potential pages for rules - though I kinda assume nids will get “create your own hive fleet”
