Custom Hero
George surveyed the battlefield before revving the engine to his bike. The rear tire spun with fury whipping the vehicle around to point straight to its destination. Upon finding purchase it lurched forward as George let a primal scream pointing the Spear of Longinus at forward toward his target. He jinked to avoid incoming fire from all directions. By the Emperor, he was going to slay this beast of a tyranid and earn valor for for name once more. There was a shift in the sans beneath him just before he was thrown from his mount. George flew forward still as his bike went askew detonating on the carapace of a nearby carnifex. The moment he hit the ground sliding in beside a rocky outcropping the ravener from below him on a moment ago was upon him. He parried with his lance an shield as best he could in his confined position. Trying to stand was useless he could see his left leg was destroyed. There was no way to stand. Still he fought. The ravener did what all animals do, it went for the kill. It’s prey was fighting back, yet a piece of it lay exposed. With admonishing force it threw two talons down simultaneously while thrust the others toward the quarry once again. It pushed the forward talons away with the pole arm again, only this time with a cost. George did not scream. He did not wince. His body was made to take theses wounds and survive. There was no reason to panic. Besides, he saw the land raider adjust it’s lascannons to slaughter this arrogant beast. The kill would not be his, but he would not lose valor because of it. The ravener blew apart across the abdomen while the lasfire had put a hole straight through. The beast lurched forward a small fraction before slumping over to it’s right side. In the small distance ahead George could see the apothecary already running to his position. He cleared the field with speed and efficiency. He arrived looking over George’s body. “Only you could go toe to toe with one of those vile creatures and only lose your legs.” “To be fair, the left one was mostly gone before that beast was upon me,” George replied. The apothecary only shook his head before gathering up his battle brother and carrying him double time to the nearest rhino transport. They entered the vehicle where the apothecary could survey the damage to his patient properly. “It appears brother two bionic legs will need to be forged to replace your missing flesh,” the apothecary stated matter of factly. “I do not want the standard replacements. I was born to ride! I am the captain of speed and vengeance! I must be able to spirit my mechanical mount straight to the enemy! What you offer will only slow down this instrument of the Emperor!” He exclaimed. He would not be put on foot again. His reputation was one of open righteous fury upon the enemy. The apothecary looked into his patient’s eyes saying only, “I’ll talk to the Forge Master.” George knew his day of fighting was at an end as the apothecary administered the sedatives. When George awoke in the apothecarium aboard the Bright Ascension he had the strange sensation of being taller. He looked down at the strangely shaped legs he had been given. He took a few steps back noticing the parchment on the med table beside him. Why was he not lying on his back? Turning his head slightly, he noticed more augmetics behind him. What had they done? These were the strangest bionics he had ever seen. He took in the equine styled body, the four legs, the connection points at the lower waist where he once use legs of flesh to stand. George picked up the parchment with zest as he began to read. I had given your request much thought. You are a mighty warrior among us. You are the Dragon Slayer, Carrier of the Sacred Spear, the Paladin of Vengeance. A knight with few to call equal. I have been informed you wished to keep your stature among your company. You are now made to run my brother. Made to run. George began to laugh. Only Gideon Phelps, the Forge Master, would give back a wish of continued service by constructing a myth from Terra’s very ancient mythologies. George took in his new centaurian body as he continued in his mirth. Only the Forge Master indeed. George the Dragon Slayer With new edition I decided to really look at my army which at the moment is rushed together unfinished projects and a rather large pile of shame. Life has dealt me a new hand with more time to hobby and do it correctly. As such, I am getting my army together as I originally envisioned it, starting with my biker captain. I wanted to have a techmarine with a centaurian body, but nothing I came up with looked right when I mocked it up. The “horse body” was always too small. The release of the new starter sets got me to thinking about bikes. If I couldn’t get the tech to look right, could I do it with this captain? He’s still a work in progress. So far, I’m ecstatic about the results! This guy only took an hour to get to his current state due to me taking my time to really look at where the two bodies would meet. Once that part was out of the way most of the “heavy lifting” on this guy was done. I’m not a hundred percent on the helmet yet. I would like something a bit more knightly, but not something I have to purchase multiples of to get. It also needs to have some stature to it, otherwise the helmets just look tiny. Let me know what you guys think... Yosef Hausakluif
What a cool idea! I think the helm works as both classic knight type visor and grill and also mech enough too to fit with the rest of the body. And to boot his weapons possess that ‘knightly’ classic feel as well. Will he at the head of a command squad of bikes, or other ‘outriders’ ? Love the ingenuity and daring in your simple but unique and effective and themed conversion. Custom Hero
Gideon Phelps had been called many things over the millennia. He took them in stride as always. He would muse about the various titles. Forge Master, Maker of the Way, Anvil of Myth. He was all of them. Phelps knew these honorifics were testaments to his work. An alarm klaxon rose as a returning stormraven brought in the wounded from the planet below. As if he already knew what work was to be done, he rose from his throne chair and made his way to the hanger. When Gideon arrived the medicae were removing Captain George Ardano from the hold of the aircraft. He noted the small stumps where his legs once attached. “What fool’s errand of a tactic did he use this time? Too much heart and not enough head to this one,” he said to the attending apothecary. “Took on a ravener that hit him from below. None were truly available to aid him. The injuries are not of his recklessness for once. Great valor on the field today,” the apothecary returned. “I was asked to convey one request.” “My full attention is upon you,” Gideon returned. “The captain wishes to remain mobil and functional within his command. I believe his exact words were ‘I am the captain of speed and vengeance. I must be able to spirit my mechanical mount straight to the enemy.’ I gave an oath to pass it to you. He wishes to be able to mount his bike again without slowing down.” “Those days are over. The bionics alone with take seconds off his pace. That would be if there is enough to work with to attach them. What do your instruments tell you about the condition of what is left of his legs?” “They will be completely removed. Bionics would need to encompass his waist to hold properly,” the apothecary responded. “Complete your work apothecary, I will inform you when the bionics are ready for him. He will never again mount a bike, yet it does not mean he will not ride again.” With that he made his way to the forge again. Gideon was a student of many things. One of those subject was ancient terran myth. In those stories were a race of quadrupeds both humanoid and equine. He would give his battle brother the wish he requested. It would not be what was expected, yet it would continue to bring him glory. Arriving at the forge he began his work. Gideon Phelps the Forge Master Gideon is a small kit bash utilizing the Feirros model for the Iron Hands. I replaced his bolter with the plasma cutter from the servo harness of my metal techmarine released so many years ago. I also added the flamer from that same model where the ammo feed would normally go. Lastly I changed the head. Not wanting yet another techmarine kit bash of this model on the table featuring the character’s face I dug deep into my bits box. I mean way down, pretty sure if you walked by you would only see my shoes sticking out. I found an old three lensed helmet with a horn on it’s right side clearly meant for a nurgle model. Knowing that I was going to face the head to the right made everything easy. I cut off the horn and he was complete. Let me know what you think. Custom Hero
Thanks Doghouse! Considering the source (one of the original conversionists I followed for years) that is some high praise! I like my centerpiece models in a force to be a focal point. The more character I can give a model, the better it is to me. Take the centaur for example. Why have just another ‘captain on a bike’ when you can have a character model in it’s own right to rival the (insert special character generated by GW) for your DIY force? The new Crusade System can help all the custom chapters out there to really dial in and drive those generic characters home. I am using only the Space Marine Codex to build my force. No supplements here. If I am going to build and army of my own, I want them all to be completely and totally my own. Will I be competitive? Who knows. Will I be excited to play? OH YES!!! Won or lose the entire things was mine. Every win is a victory and every loss a learning experience which will help to breed victory. Next in this order of builds will be a primaris chaplain, a chaplain with jump pack, and a judiciar. Stay tuned! Custom Hero
I promised a few chaplains in the last post as well as judiciar. Most of the converting/ kit bashing is low except for the jump chaplain. I don’t have the names and stories down just yet, but they will come with further updates. Judiciar I decided to use the judiciar model helm once I saw that I could trim down the sides and fold to make it a metal plate. I added an ork metal jaw to the collar to help sell the executioner theme and cover some open space left on the phobos librarian base model. More trophies will be added to this guy as he progresses in a campaign. Chaplain 1 Pretty standard primaris apothecary withfhe excpetion of his crozius. As I am using a knightly theme, I chose to swap the skull for the flail from the Deathwing Knights kit. Chaplain 2 I got ahold of one if the indomnitus chaplain models. Just a head swap here. I also added a cross from Pop Goes The Monkey to his shoulder pad. Chaplain 3 I wanted a really imposing hump chaplain. His crozius became a mace from the Deathwatch sprue (of which I used both arms). He sports a Sanguinary Guard jump pack, Reiver helm, and Black Templar shoulder pad as well. The body is a free Slaughter Priest with torso armor from the chaos range. I can’t remember the parts specifically as I ordered them quite a while back. The stomach space was filled in with green stuff and smoothed over. High Chaplain Started this guy from the Judiciar model from Indomitus. Not completely happy with him yet. The backpack will probably go away with something better taking it’s place. I may try to turn the vents from a Primaris pac upward and attach the braziers to the grille sections. I am currently waiting for a specific head to come in: Once it arrives I plan to attach it as well ad convert a censer from a Deathwing Knight mace to finish the outstretched hand. As always, let me know what you think.... Custom Hero
I back to my jump captain. I was never really happy when I tried to primaris him using the Shrike model. The next iteration was just as rushed. I have a little green stuff and base work left to do on this guy, but I finally have the type of model I envisioned. Until we cross paths again... Custom Hero
Had a bit of luck shine on me today. I met with another local player who was buying the Command starter box who didn’t want the Space Marine half. I traded him the Necrons from my Recruit box plus 5 Immortal/Deathmarks I never built for Kill Team. Once I looked at what I collected so far, I found I was only the Bladeguard and Ancient short if having the Indomitus box. It looks like conversions are in order! Soon I should have the contents/converted equivalents of Dark Imperium, Shadowspear, and Indomitus. This is getting even more fun! I’m digging the helmet choice on the Smash-Cap. The conversion is looking great. One point of criticism, and this may just be personal taste, but have you considered de-AoS’ing the warhammer a little? I think a couple 40k bits and bobs could really elevate the look while concealing it’s fantasy roots a little. Custom Hero
I have started working on a project I have wanted to for a while now. I am going to be working on an INQ28 series using modified Killteam rules. I’ve seen quite a few videos from Miniwargaming on Youtube of their custom campaigns. It has been great seeing how they blend for custom campaigns. So now, it is time for me to try my hand at it. Below is Darakumn, one if my stars of the narrative campaign. Custom Hero
Hey guys! It’s been a minute since my last post. With all that’s going on in my hobby time I’m more than a little blessed with things to do. My nephew and I have begun working on Blood Bowl and Blitz Bowl teams as well as stadiums. I have also started putting together Stormcast Eternals for a Path to Glory campaign at my local gaming store. As such, there hasn’t been a lot of posting here due to the fact that nothing I have been working on is even remotely 40k related. That is, until now. I began looking at the characters I need for my INQ28 campaign. I’m using modified last edition Kill Team rules for the campaign, but more on that later. Right now we’re here for models. Every story needs a big bad. My campaign will center around cultists that are gathering around a daemon prince from a chaos space marine force. The prince will debut at the end of season one of the campaign. With that in mind, I began working on the prince. I wanted something that said still changing instead of full transformation. I had an old Artemus from the 54mm Inquisitor game and decided to use him as the base. I’ve cut away his feet and replaced them with cloven hooves (I can’t remember what they ate from). I also used arms, a tabard, a belt (shaved to a buckle), thigh plates, and a tail from the daemon prince kit. I hade an old defiler mask in my box and decided to use that over the original model’s face. I have begun green stuff work on the head to build a helmet. I have a lot of green stuff work to do on this guy before I add anymore. Currently I am waiting for the green stuff already applied to the model to cure. Still to add are wings and base along with various detail pieces. We all know that a daemon prince isn’t complete without his skulls! I’ll post more as I get it done. Really having fun with this one! Custom Hero
While at work I found that a friend/coworker was interested in 40k. After some conversation it boiled down to the usual. Lots of time, but not a lot of disposable income to sink into an army that he didn’t know if he’d keep playing. We settled on Kill Team. I let him borrow my rulebook to look over with the understanding that he would buy his own. From the 40k conversation I knew he was interested in Grey Knights, so I threw together a team from the extras in my bits box to help him out. I had also found out his roommate may want to play too. Armed with that knowledge I started looking at what would be a feasible foe for the Grey Knights. Obviously daemons came to mind, but I don’t have any. I went with the next best thing, Chaos Marines. I used parts from the old berserkers kit along with the old and new chaos kits. To allow my friend to paint and lore them however he wanted I gave them all helms from the raptor kit. Chaos gets two fire teams. Here’s how they turned out. Fire Team 1 Aspiring Champion, Warrior, Heavy Gunner Fire Team 2 Icon Bearer, Warrior, Gunner I plan to have them primed before I give them to him next shift. I’ve gotten a wooden box to store them in along with a tape measure and a tin of dice. I hope he’s happy with them!
