You could do a BA successor based on the Twilight saga before I do.

I can't help but think a Twilight inspired Chapter should be in the Liber Chaotica. Say the AdMech made chimeras of Space Wolf and Blood Angels gene-seed (to reflect the inspiration's Jacob vs. Edward, werewolf vs. vampire), in an attempt to create "perfect warriors"... with predictably disastrous results, the Marines turning to Slaanesh in attempt to achieve the perfection the AdMech and the Imperium "denied" them, and getting sparkly skin as a direct result of Slaanesh's blessings...

Or you could go a bit sideway and use the "angels" from Neon Genesis Evangelion (or just one of them) as inspiration.

Great idea! Naturally, such a Chapter should be closely allied to a Titan Legion and/or a Knight House. Say Chaplains wear bird skull masks (so they will resemble Sachiel, Angel of Water), and Terminators each have a red Crux Terminatus fixed to their breastplates instead of the left pauldrons (so the Crux Terminatus will resemble the S2 organs that grant the Angels an Invulnerable Save in the form of AT fields)...

And now a new Chapter concept, but I'm still taking suggestions and thoughts about the Nyght Flyers if people have any:

 

 

 

Death Dealers

The Death Dealers chapter is a Blood Angels successor chapter that has fallen to decadence and internal corruption. A few battle-brothers with followers have broken free and try to return to their duty the Imperium.

 

Their armour is black with blue-grey highlights. Their decorations are in silver instead of gold, and gems are usually white, pale blue or pale grey, minimal angelic decorations/markings (including decorative wings) and then only on the artificer armours. There helmets’ eye-lenses are usually blue.

For millennia the Death Dealers chapter have been the secret rulers of their home and recruitment world, the hive world of Ördögház, in time most of the chapters battle-brothers become more interested in ruling their world, with the indulgences that offered, and interna politics rather than their duty as the Emperor’s Angels of Death.

 

An example of have far they had fallen was that they seldom sent battle-brothers to conflicts that they saw had no real consequence to their own space, rather staying put to continue with their political games. And when requests for help was received, they often sent death cult assassins instead of Space Marines, with the excuses that their Marines was better needed somewhere else.

 

The Death Dealers have twelve companies, known as covens, instead of the standard ten, and each coven is, similar to the Iron Hands’ clan-companies, a self-contained unit responsible for its own recruiting and maintenance of its motorpool. Each of them also controls one of the planet's twelve great hive cities (there exist more hive cities on Ördögház, but they are of lesser importance). The covens are not called by number; instead, each coven is named after the hive city it controls, and has also taken the hive’s symbol as their coven symbol, usually shown on their right pauldron in white, grey, silver or blue. Each coven is led by an Elder, who is chosen from the coven’s veterans.

The twelve great hive cities are [names and symbols] [if I ever Index-ar this so would this probably be in a side box. The symbols are likely going to be based on things you can get from GW’s transfer sheets]

 

As a way to prevent the Chapter from getting into political infighting and completely lose leadership at important time do to the lose of the Chapter Master, known as a Grand Elder, to death or the Flaw, the Death Dealers have three Grand Elders at all time, with two of them sleeping in stasis-sarcophagus while the third is awake and leads. Unless the awake Grand Elder falls to death, thirst or madness, will he after a century of being awake and leading the Chapter awake one of the other Grand Elders and after sharing blood and information go into stasis himself while the awakened Grand Elder leads for a century, this follows a pattern so there will always be two intervals between awakening. If a Grand Elder is lost before his time is at end, the next Grand Elder in line is awaken to lead the chapter through the crisis, ones the crisis is over the other alive Grand Elder is awakened, informed what has happened and partake in the choosing of a new third Grand Elder, before going back into stasis together with the newly chosen Grand Elder. 

 

There is a lot of political infighting between the covens, and even officers within a coven, but this is never allowed to hinder the Chapter’s effectivity (or that’s at least the official line). As part of this do each coven secretly control the local noble houses and official organisations of their hive city, and try to make just their hive city the most powerful. The Chapter also do external politics with the noble families, trade houses, and organisations from other worlds, in Ördögház’s near space, or that the hive world is dealing with.

 

Each of the coven controlled hive city also has a network of secret monasteries belonging to the death cult the Honoured Acolytes of the Emperor’s Death Dealers, or simply the Acolytes. The cult sees the Death Dealers as semi-divine and believe that by killing for them they do the Emperor’s work and relive the Marines of lesser duties so they can focus on greater ones in His service. What the Acolytes don’t understand, or maybe want to understand, is that many of their targets are only market for death because of the chapter’s political games, and when they are sent out in the galaxy to fulfil requests for help, their masters seldom focus on more important stuff but instead their own self-gratification or internal politics. The cult’s assassins and warriors are mostly female since most of the promising young males are taken in by the chapter as aspirants.

The Honoured Acolytes of the Emperor’s Death Dealers, is its own organisation but are fanaticly loyal to the Death Dealers and follow any order they give. They are either sent our alone (solo or in group) or beside Death Dealers as support, depending on the mission needed. It's not uncommon for battle-brothers that have been marked as potential officers to be send out to lead cult assassins as a preperation for leadership of Astartes.

 

While the Death Dealers have grown decadent are they still Space Marines and honour and status is earned through combat and the slaying of enemies. But their focus is on the enemies of their homeworld, its subjects and trade partners, not the enemies of the Imperium or humanity as a whole. They also prefer to send their death cultists or forces from the Ördögház Free Regiments against enemies whose defeat would bring them little of status or honouring.

 

Beside fighting, and sending cult assassins, after the enemies of the Imperium do the Death Dealers go after Imperial groups (that are not their allies) that try to take over something the Chapter is interested in (a trade, the right to first buy from a world, a local organisation, etc.). They also help their political allies in their dealings, in exchange for deepened alliances, direct or future favours, or similar.

 

Because of [event] and [event] have they sworn vengeance against the Blood Wolves, respectively Skyrar's Dark Wolves Chaos Space Marines warbands. Space Wolf Lord Harald Deathwolf’s slaying of the leader of the Blood Wolves, Svane Vulfbad, have made some of the Death Dealers antagonistic toward him and his company since they feel he robbed them of their vengeance. This led to a clash at [event]; together which some inappropriate comments regarding the origin of the Blood Wolves and Skyrar's Dark Wolves, has made Death Dealers distrusted and disliked by Space Wolves, with Harald Deathwolf swearing that he would never fight by their side.

 

During the Defence of Baal, did the Death Dealers sent a force of battle-brothers and assassins to help against the Tyranids. The survivors decided to stay with the Blood Angels instead of returning to Ördögház with the Primaris technology, to help rebuild and to create a new path for themselves instead of the one the chapter had been walking for ages. They plan to return one day, something they both fear and hope for. Hope that will once again see their home and will be able to reform their brothers; fear that they will not, or worse, find that those left have fallen deeper and become renegades, or even sworn themself to Chaos.

 

Miscellaneous

+ because of reasons (the material used; how the STC was put together; ancient programming nobody knows how to change; such) do all the lamps produced on Ördögház give of a bluish light, this also affects the Death Dealers space ships, which are re-equipped with basics (and some not so basic) items from Ördögház’s factories and artificers.

+ defects in their gene-seed turn them pale of skin and sensitive to UV-light, their eyes often change colour to an electric shade of blue or gold when agitated, with some of them having this inhuman eye-colour permanent.

do they have a Sanguinary Guard? If they have one, they are silver with bluish highlights instead of gold. Should the blood drops gems be in red, or in pale blue or white? They don't have a Sanguinary Guard

+ Like many of the Sons of Sanguinius do the Death Dealers use artistry as a way of meditation. In their case the artistry usually take the form of gem cutting, silver smithing, jewellery making, stone engraving, and painting.

+While the Death Dealers, like all Chapters, train for all environments, ranges and weapons, do they have a preference for close range combat, with many of the battle-brothers always carrying pistols and/or throwing weapons (knives and stars are the most common).

What's the Chapter's relationship with the death cults? Are Marines required to lead their own death cults- founding one by themselves, if necessary- so potential officers may have experience as leaders?

The Inquisition often has listening posts on Chapter planets. (Graham McNeill's The Chapter's Due states there's one on each world of Ultramar.) I can picture the Orfo Hereticus establishing an Order Militant of the Adepta Sororitas on the Chapter planet, as an instantly useable weapon against the Death Dealers if the Chapter turns renegade or traitor- only for the Death Dealers to have the female death cultists join the Order, subverting it and bringing the Sisters under the Chapter's direct control.

As a way to prevent the Chapter from getting into political infighting and completely lose leadership at important time do to the loss of the Chapter Master, known as a Grand Elder, to death or the Flaw, the Death Dealers have three Grand Elders at all time, with two of them sleeping in stasis-sarcophagus while the third is awake and leads. I know this is a direct reference to the Elders "leapfrogging through time" in the movie, but those Elders lived on a relatively peaceful world- there was no risk an enemy fleet would arrive to subject the planet to Exterminatus- and ruled over relatively peaceful people- as most humans had no knowledge of the vampires, there was no danger a nation and its military would nuke the city where the coven was located, in a desperate attempt to eliminate the "monsters".

 

Space Marines don't exist in such a peaceful world, beside peaceful people. "Leapfrogging through time" in such a manner, WILL leave the Grand Elders ignorant of new threats, and potentially helpless against those threats, as the Ultramarines learned the Hard Way when Hive Fleet Behemoth struck Ultramar.

 

How about having the Elders form a council that rules the Chapter in place of a single Chapter Master, the way the Iron Hands do? The "Grand Elders" can be Dreadnoughts who have symbolic rule over the Chapter, and whom the "Elder Council" awaken once every century- or when emergencies strike- like Bjorn the Fell-handed.

The Codex does make allowances for Chapters whose recruiting practices are riskier, e.g., the Exorcists, which have two extra Scout Companies. The Death Dealers can easily claim they NEED two extra Covens, as use of Blood Angels gene-seed is riskier than that of Ultramarines.

How about silver, as a visual reference to the silver nitrate bullets used against Lycans?

Say these officers are distinguished by the trim on their armor, as a countermeasure against enemies seeking to cripple the Chapter by eliminating such specialists, i.e., what the Celestial Lions suffered when "Ork snipers" killed off their Apothecaries during the Third War for Armageddon? Thin colored lines on armor will be more difficult to differentiate, than entire suits in distinct colors.

Instead of making the Marines sensitive to UV light, how about having the blue lighting on the Chapter's ships be a direct consequence of replacing white lights with UV lights, as a countermeasure against pathogens? Nurgle and his Plague Marines ARE opposed to the Emperor, after all.

If I have any complaint, it's a general one. I've always wanted to create a Blood Angels descendent chapter, but all the good ideas have been taken. Thanks for taking more of those good ideas buddyverymad.gif ......msn-wink.gif 

 

Possible BA successor ideas you could use:

Go full in with the angel theme and base them on a kind of angel from mythology. Or base them on the angels in a pop-cultrual work, if you have the In Nomine RPG could you base the chapter on one of the angel types from that, or one of the arch-angels. Or you could go a bit sideway and use the "angels" from Neon Genesis Evangelion (or just one of them) as inspiration.

Or maybe a chapter that see itself as fallen from grace (because of mutations, acts they have done, or such) and style themself after demons, Dante's Inferno or similar - they possibly see the Black Rage as a blessing since it shows that Sanguinius have not abounded them.

Or you cold go with the vampire theme but focus on non-european vampires, like the adze*, vetalajiangshimanananggalpenanggalan,etc.

* suggest arming them with adzes, or at least have it that they use them as symbols of command/hoour

Or focus on the BA old cognomen "The Eaters of the Dead" and use a ghoul, or wendigo theme 

 

To continue with this since I have some more ideas and nowhere else to post them.

 

Since the Blood Angels successors are one of the exceptions to Aaron Dembski-Bowden's 2:nd Tenet - “It doesn’t matter who your daddy is.” - (their gene-seed do curse them with the Red Thirst and the Black Rage) can you take a neutral Chapter concept (allied to a Titan Legion and sworn to always fight beside their titans when they go to war; underwater specialists inspired by BioShock; Zulu warriors as Space Marines; Vikings & Germans as Space Marines but focusing on the parts ignored by the Space Wolves; etc) and ask "how do they deal with the Red Thirst and the Black Rage"? Also ask "do they know that they are BA successors?" if the answer is no, what do they think the Red Thirst and the Black Rage are?

 

There is also their Italian renascence theme which could be mined for lots of ideas: maybe a chapter that are somewhat of mercenaries lead by a Condottiero; or something da Vinci inspired, allied to an unorthodox forge world and using Pteraxii wings on their jump-packs; or maybe a Venice the merchant city state theme, they could be allied to one or more Rogue Trader houses, or maybe the Imperial Merchant Fleet, or the main trade house/s of a sector; etc.

 

Or move the Italian thing backward or forward: what about a Roman theme; or fascist Italy; or Italian mafia (Vampire the Masquerade’s Clan Giovanni could be an inspiration).

I was thinking that the death cult (it's just one spread out on many hives) is its own organisation but are fanaticly loyal to the Death Dealers and follow any order they give. They are either sent our alone (solo or in group) or beside Death Dealers as support, depending on the mission needed.

 

I like the idea of potential officers leading cult assassins as a preperation for leadership of Astartes. Maybe will I ad that.

No, but the non-serfs under them, outsiders negotiating with the chapter-serfs, outsiders that try to take over something (a trade, the first right to buy something from a world) the Chapter is interested in, and similar - while the Chapter do lots of internal politics do they also do external politics with the other noble families, trade houses, and organisations in near space or that Ördögház are dealing with.

The idea, as I amjustifying it, is more that they keep backups Grand Elders since they have had experience of sudden loss of a Grand Elder to death, Thirst, or Rage while under attack and it led to complete chaos when they could not all agree on who should led, they survived the experienced but decided on creating backup Grand Elders if it happened again (or maybe after the second/third time it had happened). The 100 years interval is so that each Grand Elder can leave his mark while also not too much time passes for the ones asleep. The BA are also known for their very well-developed ability to absorbed memory from flesh and blood, meaning that if a Grand Elder is awakened during a crisis is he just handed a bucked of blood or a fresh Death Dealer corps to drink/eat and he has a full grasp of the situation.

Like the Tau Commander Puretide? I personally thought the fluff behind him and his students to be stupid, making the Tau military overdependent upon a single leader, stifling innovation and imagination. By having "his greatest students... placed into cryogenic stasis by the Ethereals in hopes of being unfrozen in the future when they are needed," the Tau deny themselves use of those students in many crises and allow these crises to worsen; deny those students opportunities to learn about enemy innovations and how to counter them, reducing the students' usefulness as a direct consequence; prevent the students from becoming teachers and becoming a foundation for future leaders to build upon.

 

(Of course, the point may be the Ethereals intentionally crippled their own military to prevent military coups, the way Stalin did when purging the Red Army of officers. If the Tau Empire's enemies were better organized, they could exploit the resulting lack of leadership and expertise to devastate the blue blighters, the way Nazi Germany did in the early years of WWII.)

 

Please don't repeat the mistakes of those who wrote Codex: Tau Empire, when writing your own IA.

While I really like the image of a newly awakened Chapter-Master/Grand Elder looking semi-mummified and moving around with countless hoses from blood bags that are being carried by servitors so is the thing that the non-awake Grand Elders are not in suspended animation or similar but kept in stasis. For them only seconds have passed between the stasis coffin they are kept in was closed and then opened, their minds and bodies as alert and whole as when they entered their “sleep”. All they need is information about what’s going on, which is easily done with help of the omophagia, just give them a bucket of their fellows’ blood, or a fresh corps to chew on.

 

 

 

 

 

 

If I have any complaint, it's a general one. I've always wanted to create a Blood Angels descendent chapter, but all the good ideas have been taken. Thanks for taking more of those good ideas buddyverymad.gif ......msn-wink.gif 

 

Possible BA successor ideas you could use:

Go full in with the angel theme and base them on a kind of angel from mythology. Or base them on the angels in a pop-cultrual work, if you have the In Nomine RPG could you base the chapter on one of the angel types from that, or one of the arch-angels. Or you could go a bit sideway and use the "angels" from Neon Genesis Evangelion (or just one of them) as inspiration.

Or maybe a chapter that see itself as fallen from grace (because of mutations, acts they have done, or such) and style themself after demons, Dante's Inferno or similar - they possibly see the Black Rage as a blessing since it shows that Sanguinius have not abounded them.

Or you cold go with the vampire theme but focus on non-european vampires, like the adze*, vetalajiangshimanananggalpenanggalan,etc.

* suggest arming them with adzes, or at least have it that they use them as symbols of command/hoour

Or focus on the BA old cognomen "The Eaters of the Dead" and use a ghoul, or wendigo theme 

 

To continue with this since I have some more ideas and nowhere else to post them.

 

Since the Blood Angels successors are one of the exceptions to Aaron Dembski-Bowden's 2:nd Tenet - “It doesn’t matter who your daddy is.” - (their gene-seed do curse them with the Red Thirst and the Black Rage) can you take a neutral Chapter concept (allied to a Titan Legion and sworn to always fight beside their titans when they go to war; underwater specialists inspired by BioShock; Zulu warriors as Space Marines; Vikings & Germans as Space Marines but focusing on the parts ignored by the Space Wolves; etc) and ask "how do they deal with the Red Thirst and the Black Rage"? Also ask "do they know that they are BA successors?" if the answer is no, what do they think the Red Thirst and the Black Rage are?

 

There is also their Italian renascence theme which could be mined for lots of ideas: maybe a chapter that are somewhat of mercenaries lead by a Condottiero; or something da Vinci inspired, allied to an unorthodox forge world and using Pteraxii wings on their jump-packs; or maybe a Venice the merchant city state theme, they could be allied to one or more Rogue Trader houses, or maybe the Imperial Merchant Fleet, or the main trade house/s of a sector; etc.

 

Or move the Italian thing backward or forward: what about a Roman theme; or fascist Italy; or Italian mafia (Vampire the Masquerade’s Clan Giovanni could be an inspiration).

And to continue with this more since I have even more thoughts and nowhere else to post them:

 

I say that the BA have three main themes: renaissance Europe (mostly Italy), vampires and angels - If you don't agree with this make your own theme list and apply the suggestions below

 

Something you could do is to take one of those themes, while ignoring the other two, and ad it to another concept, like:

"A fleet-based Chapter that are masters of void combat and boarding actions" with an angelic theme.

"Pre-fall Iron Warriors as a modern Chapter" who are also very renascence Italian in culture.

"The Celts as Space Marines" who are also vampires. 

 

Or combine two of those themes while leaving out the third, like:

"Renaissance European vampires as Space Marines"

Renascence Europe + Angels = "The Catholic church during the Renaissance, with lots of angelic imagery, as Space Marines"

 

 

Of course the Red Thirst and Black Rage will always be in the background (or maybe not, the Lamenters did not have the Black Rage for millennia) but don't need to be something to put importance on.
